The last shout from Halston
This was the magnum opus from Halston. Couture was lost in the shuffle in 1988 as the market was literally flooded with every designer producing so many new offerings.

The bottle is iconic. Its sterling silver and gets tarnished. I polish it often. This seemed to be Halston's farewell gift to the world as he would leave it in the next few years. He was the most revolutionary US designer ever paving the way for the Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors in his wake. No one will ever raise a commotion like Halston. His fragrances were a major event in my life. They represented a night on the town.

It contains a sharp distinct very green chypre that is somewhat familiar yet truly original. Perhaps the last of its kind to grace our collections. Chypres began to get sweeter with less oakmoss in the following decade and are now gone forever. Its also clean without being soapy. It radiates elegance and Halton style 100%.

The flowers are well blended as is the entire composition. On my skin its flawless. Perhaps the tree above is missing a few notes? Galbanum, iris, neroli and a lot of green. Rose, patchouli, vetiver, oakmoss, amber and heavy woods are a potent and dramatic production here with the lights turned up on the dance floor. This is last call and there is some time for that last drink if you hurry!!!

Supplies are dwindling on line and do not hesitate if you are a fan or curious.

Old School Chypre
Monster projection & crazy longevity are the hallmarks of this 1980s classic.

Halston Couture EDP demands the right woman to wear it ... and I don't think I'm her. Halston Couture EDP wears me, rather than the other way around. So much so that I over-sprayed it in my office, and the scent lingered for over a week. If you can't find frags that last, you might try this one. It'll last. You can trust me, the janitor, and every one who works on my floor at the office!

Halston Couture just doesn't love me back. It's quite indolic, poopy in fact, and also dewy. There are no top notes or florals. No rose. :( HC is all about the base, which is predominantly moss on me with some patch & amber. I'm pretty sure the top notes have burned off this. I have tried to love HC with a light hand, with dabbing cotton, and with layering Tea Rose. All #FAIL.

UPDATE - I have a teeny, tiny bit of vintage EL Knowing in parfum form, concentrated with the top notes gone. That is what Halston Couture smells like to me. HC is definitely old school chypre.

NOTE TO SELF - Stop trying to love old-school chypres. They are not into you.

If the idea of an oriental chypre appeals to you, give it a go.
This is an interesting 80s-style scent. It is similar to Halston by Halston, but it has another perfume grafted onto it. It is a mildly green chypre with a rose/amber/patchouli oriental squeezed into the same bottle. Surprisingly it’s not a train wreck. It’s full of that more-more 80s style, but the rich amber connects the two genres and maintains just enough tension to keep things from getting out of focus. If you want a better constructed chypre/oriental hybrid, try Lancome’s reissued Sikkim.

Halston in Haarlem
Summer 2018: My husband and I had planned a short vacation in Amsterdam. As a true perfume nerd, I had researched all the interesting fragrance dealers in the city weeks in advance. When I discovered a shop called “Perfumes of the Past,” my heart skipped a beat: a perfumery dedicated solely to vintage perfumes!!! Although not in Amsterdam, it was just a short train ride away: in Haarlem, a typically Dutch picturesque small town about 20 km away. I could hardly wait to get there. The store is truly a dream come true for any vintage lover: packed from top to bottom with the most wonderful scents of the past… you don’t even know where to look first.
At the top of my wish list was the Halston Woman from 1975 in the old EDT version.
I expressed my wish, and the very nice but somewhat disorganized shop owner promptly presented me with a bottle: the typical Halston bottle, but in milky glass with silver… I had never seen anything like it. Since the bottle and the color of the liquid were identical to the original Halston, I thought it must be a special edition and bought the fragrance untested.
Back in our Amsterdam vacation apartment, then the shock: it doesn’t smell like my Halston at all! At first, I thought the fragrance had gone off… what a shame for the money. I then packed it away in the back corner of the cupboard and completely forgot about it for several years.
Fast forward to Winter 2021: moving from the big city to the countryside: I have to prepare my extensive fragrance collection for the move and eventually hold the old, spoiled Halston in my hand. Sprayed it again. I couldn’t believe it: a chypre dream of the highest class… my perfect scent, for which I would (almost) leave all the others behind!
I eventually understood my mistake: Halston Couture is a fragrance from 1988, also a chypre, but not a flanker of Halston Woman, rather an independent scent. And what a scent it is: classically fresh, citrusy top notes that lift you up. A sophisticated floral heart that catches you again and a base of oak moss and cypress that you can fall into. Fresh, warm, unsweetened, dry, and very, very elegant and confident. Such a thing simply doesn’t exist today… sigh.
The bottle is partly made of real silver - a cleaning cloth was included in the packaging.
I am referring here to the Eau de Parfum; the Eau de Toilette is just as beautiful, although somewhat more transparent.
