Halston Goes Oud
Modern, woody and most assuredly... balmy. First impression is that of Armani Prive Ambre Soie, but far from linear. Halston Amber is not loud, but it is far from quiet. Throughout its transitions, each layer of notes are given abundant time to be vibrant. As we soar deeper into the dry-down the oud begins to cape the fragrance, but domesticated by bergamot and Virginia cedar. Myrhh is raw, but is a team player here. The more the middle and base settles, the more of a Middle Eastern vibe I get... and more is better. Even the bottle looks the part. I'm not a Halston fan, but I'm proud to have this among my collection.

Halston goes Oud
Halston is a brand that has dedicated itself like no other to spicy men's fragrances. Z-12 and Z-14 are legendary, and I still remember: gift sets of Catalyst flew off the shelves in the 90s during Christmas.

And it is also the cold season when Halston perfumes fit best. With Halston Man and Man Amber, they are now trying to build on past successes. While Halston Man smells a bit spicy-metallic, as the bottle looks, Halston Man Amber is closer to tradition. This is Halston as we know it. It has the typical, somewhat festive Halston spice. I find the top and heart notes to be very complex for a fragrance of today, and I had to look at the label of my sample (thank you, scent stick!) to make sure it wasn't one of the earlier Halstons. For a short time, there was a citrus-freshness, something floral, and also a certain sweetness.

The development to the base happens quite quickly - and it is the base note that carries and characterizes the fragrance from the very beginning. Here, there is the warmth of amber, the somewhat cozy Halston spice, and of course, woody oud. No one seems to want to do without this magic word anymore. Meanwhile, Halston has integrated the oud well - it is only present in the background, perceptible only to connoisseurs. The oud contributes a dark note to the fragrance throughout its development. Finally, a few dry-powdery notes seem to keep the spice and the oud in check.

Of course, the comparison with Montale ouds arises with this pyramid, particularly with Amber & Spices. But both fragrances follow a completely different concept. While the Montale scent is loud and intense, bringing a very harsh sandalwood (Javanol?) to the forefront, Halston is trying to move away from the powerhouse image. Man Amber certainly connects to Catalyst but holds back much more. Hence, the oud is not very strong either. However, it is enough to give Man Amber a dark timbre.

Man Amber is a highly interesting, modern perfume: a cozy-warm spice and amber scent in a dark timbre. Halston presents this direction in a contemporary, understated form. I recommend the fragrance to those who liked Catalyst or Gucci pour Homme.

Frighteningly Correct
Halston Man Amber is unsympathetic to me. Not because it might not smell good, on the contrary, but it reminds me of a teacher who always had a flawlessly correct appearance, an aloof personality, and probably no private life at all. I can't remember ever having seen him laugh heartily or having talked to him about a topic that wasn't part of the curriculum.

I experience a similar mood with Halston Man Amber. I usually find amber scents warm and soft. But HMA is scratchy for me, almost a bit musty and very serious. I also feel the need to clear my throat when I smell it on my wrist. I assume that myrrh and oud spread this dusty-dark aura. Bergamot is listed in the pyramid, but it seems to have somehow gotten lost. The fact that geranium is not really present would even be a plus for me, but then it just becomes - strict and aloof. Mind you, it's not unpleasant; it smells good, but it's too correct and unapproachable for me to want to wear this fragrance more often.

The Cuddler
Until now, I had no experience with amber. Even though it was sometimes present in the perfumes I wore, I never knew what amber actually smells like.

So is Man Amber a dominant amber that is worth sniffing?
Apicius said it is Christmas-like, but that doesn't really come through for me. What welcomed me was a velvety powderiness, a cozy pleasure. A feeling I get when I lie down in freshly washed bed linens. Don't get me wrong, Man Amber is neither soapy nor as synthetic as laundry detergent; it's all about the feeling.

Bergamot and other citrus notes are often my personal horror in fragrances, but here it hardly stands out at all. The myrrh is easily detectable and knows how not to be too intrusive. The oud is quite hidden, and there's nothing to complain about there. Personally, I believe that the combination of labdanum, musk, and cedarwood creates this cozy velvetiness. The dry-down strongly reminds me of CdG's Ouarzazate and L'artisan's "Coeur de Vétiver Sacré." However, how amber actually smells remains a mystery to me - I probably need to try several more amber fragrances.

I don't know if I would wear this EdT in summer. It's not too sweet, but there's something that makes me think it's more suitable for cuddly evenings with a partner or for dates in a restaurant. I also find that the scent has a very feminine note - it's just as unsuitable for gym-goers as it is for the southern macho.

Thanks to Lilienfeld :D

An oriental interpretation of Gucci PH. Spicy and not too "dry," but a very pleasant amber autumn scent. H/S so-so :/
