floral fruity
This fragrance smells in the beginning like French milled soap to me. It threw me off because the top notes are supposed to be fruity, but all I could smell was a top of the line vintage soap. I let it sit on me longer, and the fruit and wine notes developed in the drydown. It was strange since I thought it would be opposite--fruity top, floral-like drydown. Needless to say, it was a unique experience. I would strongly suggest testing it a few times instead of buying blindly since the fragrance is a different experience for each wearer.

Sui Generis Reddishness
I have been meaning to review Ineke SCARLET LARKSPUR for quite some time now, having acquired a bottle back in September 2011. Each time I wear this perfume, I find myself unable to grasp exactly what it is. The first time I donned it, I was sampling the Floral Curiosities series (of which this is one member) at an Anthropologie store in Boston. I had vowed not to buy any more perfumes scent unsniffed, so I made the trek downtown to give these special limited edition creations a try.

It was a hot day outside, and I had walked a few miles, so when I got inside the store I basically doused myself with the tester bottle. The perfume was not too loud or strong, and it both felt and smelled refreshing, so that was part of the reason. But I returned to the tester bottle again a couple more times because I just couldn't figure out what this was supposed to be.

SCARLET LARKSPUR is not exactly gourmand but also not exactly fruity floral. Instead, it falls somewhere in between. I would compare this to the better members of the Salvatore Ferragamo INCANTO series, because this fragrance, too, has a brightness and conveys a sense of cheery optimism. The difference is that the components in this SSRI launch seem entirely natural to my nose. The problem with BLISS and BLOOM is that although on good days they smell great, on bad days they become vaguely annoying. No such problem with this Ineke creation, I am happy to be able to say.

The tightly blended notes are not easily disentangled, but there is an overall feeling of reddishness. This composition is fruity without really seeming fruity, as contradictory as that may sound. I really don't know how to describe the scent, but I like it, though I usually do not like fruity-floral compositions all that much. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes bright, optimistic fruity floral fragrances, but I think that some who usually shun that category may like it as well. SCARLET LARKSPUR is an affable, pretty creation. It is at once both inoffensive and strangely appealing.

Here are the notes on the box of this limited edition perfume:

delphinium cardinale (= Scarlet Larkspur)
blood orange
red currant
black raspberry
morello cherry
claret wine
East Indian nutmeg
saffron
tonka bean
bourbon vanilla
amyris wood

A Truly Noble Speciality of the Highest Class
I believe everyone knows the rare moment of joy that arises when they receive a gift they weren't expecting, something they didn't even know they wanted, and that is perfectly tailored to them. At least, I would wish such a moment for everyone. I experienced it with Floral Curiosities - Scarlet Larkspur in a swap package as a bonus from Mamski.

Scarlet Larkspur came in a 15ml bottle, the packaging in the form of a small book, so the bibliophile, or rather parfumophile edition: very finely and lovingly designed.

And the content continues this exquisite design, giving the packaging its due honor:
At first, it is citrus-fresh, slightly sweet, and somewhat alcoholic, reminiscent of wine for a moment. Soon, a note appears that I would classify as chamomile. I was a bit surprised by this, but I have tested Scarlet Larkspur three times now and I still perceive it the same way.
A slightly herbal note, likely attributed to blackcurrant, already gives the top note character and depth. I must say, I can't detect any raspberry or cherry here. And even though the fragrance pyramid suggests sour notes: no trace of that.
The cherry, which I find to be more of a delicate sweet cherry, slowly comes together with the heart note. Here, it quickly becomes powdery, warmer, and floral. There it is, the larkspur, although I don't know how this particular larkspur smells, I perceive a soft, warm, richly spicy floral scent. The chamomile gradually diminishes, instead, I sense a hint of saffron, which I love so much.
This unique, interesting, and simultaneously harmoniously balanced combination is something I have never smelled in any other perfume.

The base announces itself early in the form of tonka.
Tonka makes Scarlet Larkspur incredibly cozy, calming, and snuggly, while the slightly herbal, fruity-floral-spicy tone of the heart note remains intact, ensuring that Scarlet Larkspur stays interesting for a long time and does not sink into a generic, warm-soft cuddle cloud.

In a way, Scarlet Larkspur is untypical for Ineke: it has a lower sillage compared to other Ineke fragrances, rather low intensity, is also less long-lasting, and feels almost restrained.
However, what is typical for Ineke is the extraordinary: Scarlet Larkspur is special and outstanding without clumsily seeking attention. I find it truly noble.

Together with Evening Edged in Gold, it is so far my favorite Ineke and more socially acceptable than that one.

Thank you, Mamski, for the moment of joy!

Sounds like an adventurous blend - and it is. But the fruits, flowers, wine, woods & vanilla create a harmonious whole.

Unfortunately, none of the listed top notes. Instead, a creamy-white clean scent. Later becomes creamy-woody. Very fine.

I’m berry - No, you’re not. Am I floral? - No, you’re not! Woody? You’re everything. Cherries with saffron, wine with vanilla.

A ride through the orchard and flower meadow ends in refined dressage. No pair-fox hunting. Pretty and well-behaved.

First fresh/juicy with a hint of fruit & flowers. It becomes drier, raspberry & cherry join in along with some herbs. Soft, warm, light.

Berries and sweet cherries cooked with red wine and vanilla. A light cream note comes in the heart. Perfect for late summer for me.

Kir Royal with orange zest! Plus, the perfect spice on a not-dominant vanilla base. Beautifully composed. Not too much of anything. A must-have!!
