'90s whatever
Derring Do opens with a jump into the near past – the almighty 1990s. A spicy, bold yet compelling accord of nutmeg on creamy-powdery woods with perhaps some incense, or something equally “resinous-woody-dusty” with a bright and transparent substance. The head notes are mostly citrus and a kind of dull, generic floral thing. Nemo by Cacharel comes to mind, mixed with Issey Miyake’s groundbreaking Eau. A poorly-persistent, fresh-powdery Oriental spicy scent with creamy woods and a sprinkle of pastel nuances (flowers, citrus). Clean, pleasant, graceful, slightly exotic, totally civilised. And boring to the bone. Fairly similar to many – cheaper – mainstream scents, too: pick any among the “clean-synthetic-floral-spicy” ones, chances are you won’t smell big differences.

The season of spring, a suit and tie and a mild mannered scent.
I had a bottle of this when Ineke first released it. I wanted something niche I was wearing a suit everyday and wanted something that fit that vibe. It was the mid 2000's and aquatic scents were everywhere. I found Derring-Do to be perfect for spring and summer in Florida's humid heat. I did not get the cool water feeling of it as it was much lighter and more sophisticated to my nose not to mention it just did not smell like cool water. It was a fresh water aquatic (no salt at all) and the floral from I guess the cyclamen and magnolia floated over some very light woods. Fresh, nice in the humid heat and unobtrusive in the office. I never replaced my bottle as I just wasn't that into aquatic scents but if I was wanting something light and fresh for spring this would not be a bad choice.

Masculine Woody Summertime Scent
Ineke DERRING DO is another of this house's masculine-leaning unisex fragrances. This one, too, is probably too masculine for me, but the quality of the ingredients is indisputable, and I would heartily recommend it to guys looking for a fresh citrus woody summertime scent. I find that all of the INEKE "unisex" compositions really lie on the masculine side of the M/F divide, and DERRING DO is no exception to the rule, but I do appreciate its fineness—for what it is.

This is how much of Benetton could smell, ...
... if one were to forgo ready-made modules and synthetics. Of course, I am doing Ineke Rühland, a talent showered with awards who has received classical training in the perfume capital of Grasse, quite an injustice, but sweet little flowers combined with fresh citrus notes give many fragrances a certain resemblance to sporty unisex budget scents. Or wait, where have we seen the citrus/violet combination in the men's world before? Right, Acqua Di Gio. The spirits I called... :)

But it's not meant to be taken negatively, as Derring-Do (Ineke's fourth work in her endeavor to work through the alphabet) makes a very elegant and well-groomed impression. The delicate composition is meant to evoke the first gentle spring shower - of course, this is not aimed at the clumsy types, but rather at the somewhat more romantic and dreamy male type.

What is remarkable is - and now we come to the big difference from the cheaper competition - how the perfumer managed to preserve the fresh and floral notes over the surprisingly long overall duration with a scent that is almost fragile, without them getting lost in the woody monotony. On the contrary, in the end, something even comes into play that reminds one of fizzy powder. Well done. Certainly also a matter of high-quality components, for which Ineke is known, but unfortunately this drives the price up a bit.

PS: Ineke is strictly against animal testing. Very likable.

A Slightly Green Lemon
Derring-Do is a citrus fragrance that doesn't quite fit my usual preferences. Here, the lemon takes center stage. At first, it comes on strong but rather unremarkably. In the beginning, the scent is truly boring. However, soon bright green, quite herbal notes emerge. Now it becomes quite yellow-green, and the comparison to the famous cleaning product is on the tip of my tongue.

Yet, Derrin-Do just barely avoids that association. Somehow, it also has a soft, sweet quality to it, perhaps from the flowers. Eventually, I realize what it is. It's a classic Cologne note that slowly blends in here.

The greenery, however, reminds me more of a refined herbal scent like Givenchy Gentleman. With all the lemon freshness, Derring-Do is somewhat like a modern, lighter version of this classic. It's not entirely clear where this fragrance is headed. The Cologne notes and herbal qualities are rather classically conservative, while the lemon freshness feels more modern and urban.

No decision is made. After two to three hours, the lemon along with the herbal elements bids farewell to a resinous, masculine, pronounced musk base. This surprises me, though not in a positive way. I do like it, but it's so different from what came before that I find this fragrance very disjointed.

Anyone who enjoys herbal, powdery lemon might want to give it a try.

While the initial smell is a kind of generic aqua citrus blast, it does dry down to a nice creamy woody base. Enjoy the dry down much more. Safe daily

Unfortunately, the men's fragrance from Ineke doesn't quite convince, as it doesn't choose between synthetic avant-garde and mainstream.

A rather annoying and linear mix of fruit and loud flowers.

Similar to Cool Water and unfortunately also similarly synthetic.
Ineke is a bit more citrusy and slightly floral.
Doesn't convince me!
