SHIBUI - A perfect balance between simplicity and complexity

Opens with all reserved elegance amidst an unsweetened dark-spicy-citric-melange of bergamot, orange, ginger, basil, cardamom, and nutmeg soon followed by the entrance of gentle hamanasu rose blossoms. Then the quiet, restrained carnality of ambrette seeds arrive and mingle with musk in an enveloping breath of hushed, shadowy sensuality. A delicate heliotrope swirls mischievously inside the smooth blend of spicy carnation blossoms with hints of clove and almonds while a buttery smooth trace of ylang-ylang, vanilla, and sweetly erotic jasmine balance the entire composition within complex layers of deep femininity. A beautifully subdued cedar entwines itself within groves of densely rich, balmy, and astringently meditative sandalwood.

To my nose and on my skin this is exceedingly and exquisitely Japanese. Never loud or bombastic. Perfectly refined. Exceptionally discreet. Quiet, hushed, deeply contemplative and bittersweet. Strong and tenacious, but never suffocating, never loud. Like the most gorgeous, delicate and finely embroidered silk…..wrapped around a sword of the finest sharpened steel. This is the samurai warlord’s wife. Supremely self-contained, elegant, educated, gracious, modest, loyal, and honorable. Beneath this woman’s magnificent, many layered, scented silken kimono is a formidable creature indeed. No excessive sweetness exists here to flatter and charm. Here…. there is only the stark beauty of steadfast devotion. This heart is a bottomless depth of dark passions and the bittersweet constancy of unrelenting honor.

A Good Idea Well Executed

Menard L'EAU DE KASANEKA opens very invitingly with a burst of brightness but also perfumey florality. It definitely seems to be an extraordinary and unique composition for a few minutes. After the enticing opening, this perfume starts to smell like a variation on the familiar sandalwood vanilla theme, although the heliotrope and jasmine are still detectable, along with a light dose of spices. The nutmeg, ambrette, and cardamom are not at all dominant, but they appear to work together to help produce the rich texture of this perfume. I've been noticing more and more that adding ambrette to nearly anything is a good idea!

In some ways, L'EAU DE KASANEKA seems to be an ideal model for all of the zillions of sandalwood vanilla perfumes launched by designers who decide to give perfumery a go to round out their fashion line. Having been launched in 2004, this was obviously not the first of the rash of sandalwood vanilla frags, but the quality of this one makes it stand out to my nose.

So often this sort of composition ends up smelling stale and yucky on my skin after only an hour or two. Not so with L'EAU DE KASANEKA. Although it smells less original in the drydown, I still find it appealing. After all, sandalwood + vanilla was always a good idea, it's just that it has been cheapened up and degraded through the use of poor quality synthetic sandalwood surrogates.

I recommend this perfume to those looking for a floriental sandalwood-vanilla composition with niche-quality components.

Sensual Ether Flight

A few days ago, I stood in front of my sample collection, puzzled about what I could try that evening. Perhaps you know this state after concentrated work, where you don't really know what you feel or need. So I randomly reached into a glass with small sample vials, and L'Eau de Kasaneka was in my hand. Purchased in a perfumery in 2007, I had not liked the scent at all back then, and the opened sample had been slumbering in my cabinet since. With the expectation of a rather boring fragrance, I generously applied some to my wrist. The top note must have evaporated over the years; I barely detected a whiff of scent and spread the half milliliter completely on my skin.

I could sense a slightly aquatic, fatty note accompanied by a few little flowers and a hint of spice as I pressed my nose to my skin. Disappointed that the fragrance did not greet me even the tiniest bit, I let my arm drop and turned to other things. But then came the surprise!

After about 15 minutes, a delicate, incredibly transparent, cozy floral veil suddenly enveloped me. A slightly fatty rose and a green garden carnation, nestled in a trace of heliotrope, rose so fine and light that the scent almost felt cool to me. Gradually, the fragrance became more radiant, intense, and warm, yet remained transparent and ethereal. I felt gently lifted by the scent and floated through a room full of delicate, beautiful feelings (ask my husband, he was there!). To my great surprise, the whole room filled with the fragrance. How could this be, such a strong sillage and at the same time this incredible transparency and finesse?

After 1.5 hours, fruity ylang-ylang took over from the other flowers, stepping forward alongside heliotrope and dancing with it in a changing circle of delicate passion and warming, almond-like sweetness. My floating happiness transitioned into a physical-ethereal sensuality. Sigh...

After about 3 hours, the ylang-ylang almost completely faded into a slightly powdery musk-vanilla base, which reminded me a bit of grape sugar, accompanied by the last memory of flowers and heliotrope. Even though the landing was gentle, I didn't particularly enjoy the ground contact in this combination. I often like musk very much, but here, after the uplifting experience, it felt almost ordinary and sobering. What a pity.

Spicy and Light

I received a sample of this fragrance and, of course, had to test it right away, so I put a drop on my skin and let it sit for a bit. Since very noble spices are used in the top note, the first impression is reminiscent of a beautiful spice market. In the heart note, there are a number of wonderful flower varieties that harmonize very well with the spicy notes. The base note also hides noble, well-selected ingredients that round off this wonderful scent and allow it to smell pleasantly for a long time.
So, anyone who prefers light, spicy, and fragrant perfumes should not hesitate to give this one a try.

Cute Presentation

I actually bought this fragrance just because of the pretty bottle. So I was even more surprised that it smelled good. Slightly herbal, spicy with floral notes. Very extravagant with a subtle base, although the ingredients suggest the opposite. It lasts relatively well, but it's not for every woman, as it is more bitter than floral.
Today I sprayed it intensively again and took a sniff. Here are the ingredients:
Top notes: Bergamot, Orange, Hamanasu (Japanese Rose), Nutmeg, Cardamom
Heart notes: Clove, Ylang-Ylang, Rose, Jasmine, Heliotrope, Sandalwood
Base notes: Ambrette seeds, Cedarwood, Vetiver, Musk, Vanilla.
It deviates slightly from the top.
The opening is fresh, delicately floral-bitter. The bitter touch probably comes from the clove and nutmeg. A very unique blend that is hard to categorize. The spicy-woody note remains warm and balsamic, occasionally orange and floral scents sneak through, for example when you stroll through the city lightly heated. Otherwise, none of the ingredients stand out; everything is nicely rounded and blends very pleasantly with the skin. Despite the hot day today, this fragrance did not feel too heavy.
The longevity is relatively long for an Eau de Toilette (which I have) (6 hours), and by evening there was still a very pleasant vanillic-woody hint to be sniffed.
