Le Fragrance de Mohair
Judith Williams was unknown to me even as a die-hard "fragrance lover." I had never come across this brand.
Until yesterday. In our town, there is a second-hand shop that mainly takes in high-quality women's fashion on consignment.
I had been there before, but I didn't think they would have perfume. The shop owner was just organizing something in a display cabinet, and I saw BOTTLES!!
Ribbed, rounded ones with a round ribbed stopper, and between the stopper crown and the bottle neck were four "golden" rings.
I asked what fragrance it was, as at first I thought of an "Annick Goutal," and tried it.
Adele, the shop owner, said: "Judith Williams, Oriental Mandarin, that's a very fine but very long-lasting fragrance."
I wanted to think about it and wait to see how the Eau de Parfum would develop. I walked the 500 meters from the shop to my home, sniffing every few minutes, even at home, and the "Oriental Mandarin" became finer and better in scent. But it didn't have a long sillage, rather about 2 meters in radius.
Then I had THE idea.....
I didn't want to buy another fragrance, but to TRADE..
I had a bottle in my collection that I had double (approximately equal in value), went into "Adele's second-hand shop, and asked her if that would be possible.....
She sniffed "my" bottle and confirmed my question.....
"CLASSIC," I said, and she laughed: "Then I don't have three of the same, but also something different...
And your nose is also satisfied.... If you have a bit of patience, a customer is bringing me some new perfumes."
So the "deal" worked out.
And the fragrance is very nice. A fresh, slightly "woody" bergamot opening with other citrus notes.
This impression doesn't last long before the heart notes emerge. And they are slightly "scratchy," woody, dark, and balsamic.
It reminds me of the mohair sweaters I used to love wearing, which I couldn't have "pure" against my skin, but always wore (it was autumn or winter anyway) a long-sleeved undershirt because the mohair, while warm and superficially fluffy, would "itch" after a while.......
I had rarely smelled something like this in a fragrance...
a bit "strange," but very interesting.
This slightly rough, "zesty" quality endures into the base, where a soft "undercoat" of amber, some musk, and bourbon vanilla forms.
Yet a few rougher "hairs" protrude olfactorily until the very end....... And, what occurs to me now: The name "Mandarin" may not even come from the fruit of that name, but could refer to THE MANDARIN... a kind of "sultan, grand mogul,..an oriental "title....
