A garden in a bottle
I'm in a garden in summer, the sun is shining down, everything around is green. I'm picking a pea pod straight from the plant, open it up, and it smells incredibly appetizing. That is how Iris de Gris starts: bright, refreshing and oh so natural, it makes me smile within seconds. Reminds me of the days I was little, and the best thing about going to my grandparents' garden was that pea veggie bed, where I could enjoy those young crisply green pea pods.

Not long after, the iris appears. Not the thick, powdery kind, but the light and breezy, grass clippings scented whiff that reminds me of garden air. The world around you suddenly appears drenched in sunshine, the air is cooler and greener, everything feels ripe, juicy, and full of life.

Well, it doesn’t last forever, projection is soft, and longevity is short. But I actually love that. It gives me the chance to spray it again during the day and get a refreshing dose of happiness. Another blast of garden breeze, another relief from the heat, another smile.

This perfume makes me smile, brightens my day, and gives me an instant boost of energy every time I spray it on my skin. It was not love from the first sniff, but the sample ran out way too fast, and I ordered a full bottle, because I couldn't imaging summer without it anymore.

Beautiful shade of green
Iris de Gris is a shade of green fragrance unlike the others I’ve tried. I am not even particularly drawn to green fragrances but this one arrived as gift sample during a deep dive into iris fragrances and bewitched me.

Crisp, fresh, gentle and persistent. We have a simultaneously crisp slightly watery galbanum-green pea accord with a soft iris-musk. Iris-musk is popular and not something I am particularly drawn to.

The iris-musk here doesn’t skew too “laundry” which is often what happens to me. It seems mostly to support the green pea accord with some rooty—perhaps ever so slightly carrot-y qualities—and a lovely sheer freshness.

In combination with a bright hint of citrus (mandarin?) and mint, the iris-musk in Iris de Gris strikes an evocative balance that I find wonderfully comforting and unique.

I am a lover of green pea and this hits the mark for me. Though I never imagined I would want to wear it as a fragrance. The mint in here becomes more prominent after a while and makes me love the fragrance even more.

A gentle fragrance with a joyful, life-affirming verdancy. Ideal for Spring and Summer. I love it after a shower or as a way to shift gears after a long day.

Weird but interesting
Tried a sample from the house, which u can purchase from l’artisan’s website (2 samples with delivery for 7,50€)

The green peas pod is what i smell at the beginning. Is the peas “folder” :-)
So you get this very green earthy smell and the iris contributes to this earthiness.

It’s pleasant and surprisingly elegant, but still too green for my tastes. Just not my thing but a very interesting creative juice. Try it if you’re a frag nerd.

The cardboard also says musks and vibrant woods.

In the Vegetable Garden……
IRIS DE GRIS is one of the five fragrances from the new “Le Potager” collection….. “Le Potager” means: The Vegetable Garden……

As the name suggests, the focus here is on a vegetable…….such as:

Cauliflower
Tomato Leaf
Fennel
Beetroot
Pea
In IRIS DE GRIS, it is the pea.

Consequently, the fragrance starts with exactly this initial scent impression…..a crisp-fresh green pea, whose rich green and distinctive aroma are highlighted by a generous portion of galbanum.

At the same time, a citrusy-minty freshness unfolds…....however, there are different reports regarding the citrus fruit used……L‘Artisan Parfumeur mentions blood orange, while other sources refer to bergamot…..

My nose would lean more towards bergamot here, as I perceive the citrus note as slightly bitter…..

Gradually, the “vegetable” scent impression weakens a bit and gives space for a completely unsweetened iris to unfold…..

For my nose, IRIS DE GRIS only becomes a “real perfume” with the appearance of that iris…..it brings its own veil-like, softly powdery touch of elegance to the fragrance experience…….in the earlier stages, I would rather call it a “smell”…..pleasant, yes, but merely a “smell”…..

Unfortunately, IRIS DE GRIS has also been “enhanced” with a minimal trace of Ambroxan, which I find particularly unpleasant…….however, the dosage is within a range that should not be noticeable to most who are not as sensitive to it as I am……so it is definitely NOT an Ambrox bomb……

All in all, IRIS DE GRIS is a thoroughly green fragrance with sprightly-fresh elements and an elegant, unsweetened veil of iris in the first 1-2 hours…..especially the latter is something I usually appreciate very much……

I perceive the aura of the fragrance as delicate and, starting from the heart note, minimally or very subtly powdery……

Those who dislike powdery scents need not worry about encountering a powdery fragrance here…..it is certainly not that……and it is not sweet either…..for that, it is initially far too green….

“I initially say” because IRIS DE GRIS becomes completely close to the skin after about two hours……..there is hardly anything left of the preceding scent notes…..no green, no pea, no citrus, and only a very minimal iris…..what remains is a pleasantly soft - albeit diffuse - scent veil that smells of nothing concrete anymore (similar to some molecular fragrances)…..

Do I like this fragrance..?

Well, it is quite appealing…..especially the beautiful unsweetened iris has captivated me……and I am generally quite open to green fragrances……

Do I need to have this fragrance…?

No. On the one hand, because it loses its distinctive character quite quickly and drifts into the - only faintly perceivable - diffuse…………on the other hand, because I find it outrageous to incorporate the cheapest ingredients like Ambroxan in a $210 fragrance…….not to mention that I don’t like it ;-)….

PS: Samples of the 5 fragrances from the new LE POTAGER collection are available directly from L‘Artisan Parfumeur….

Very savoury, pea-forward. Not totally unpleasant but definitely reminds me of opening up a bag of peas. Reminds me a little of vetiver?

Fresh, delicate, soft, faintly sweet. Gently verdant. I feel clean and alive. Crisp. Sheer. Understated beauty.

Pleasant and green. Becomes more minty and bitter as it progresses on the drydown

Fresh and green peas. Elegant and hyper-realistic. Too mature for me in dry down, but beautiful nonetheless.

L’Artisan has this white musk that just kills the scent experience for me. I love peas, irises, everything else in here. But the musk makes me ill.

The taste of a slice of dried green citric fruit. Wears like an Eeu de Cologne. My skin intensifies a white type of musk at the base.

If you love dry iris, this is the one for you. Despite the use of modern aroma chemistry and the vegetable notes, the scent feels classic to me.

Iris, let's weed the garden
Then plant some herbs and roots.
Iris waves her magic wand,
Sending down musk powder dust.

Aparter floral, fresh green iris with mint and a hint of bergamot + musk. Finally, a L'Artisan that I actually like.
