Not mass appealing but cool
MA reads as freshly cleaned beetroots in liquid form! I can picture the kitchen towel used to wipe off the soil from the beets, and the veggies are in a bowl ready to be pickled or sliced. This is a faithful interpretation of beetroots.

I’ve seen some reviews highlight an earth note, but my nose doesn’t detect it. I don’t get petrichor or the smell of fluffy, dark soil. In my humble gardening experience, beets (even when cleaned) have an earthy quality that’s complicated by an unexpected sweetness, similar to a carrot.

Smelling this makes me feel closer to a homestead or garden. MA is definitely a photorealistic beetroot. Because of that, MA is not a mass-appealing scent. Few people are going to want to smell like the least loved root vegetable, and I can’t blame folks for that. I think MA could quiet a craving for gardeners and cooks, but I don’t think this will ever debut at Sephora, Ulta or Boots.

Musc Amarante
I feel this one preceded the vegetal trend we'll continue to see through 2024. It's a tender and humble fragrance with unquestionable beetroot note. I love beetroot and in this iteration, it's a little softer and tidier. It's... beetroots washed and prepped in a the kitchen, rather than beetroots yanked out of the ground with dirt flying around. I think the musk and pink pepper adds a quiet, sentimental quality about it that's more refined and less photo-realistic and earthy.

But with beetroot being inherently an earthy note, I think this would be really nice (and an unexpected choice) for a younger, 20-something guy. The sort of guy who likes Aesop and Malin + Goetz, but isn't necessarily a hypebeast. If I think about it, this scent is almost like the younger, more timid brother to CDG's Rouge which is a much heavier beetroot/incense scent.

The Divine Perfume?
The American writer Tom Robbins begins his novel "Pan Aroma" with the following words:

"The beet is the most intense of all vegetables. Admittedly, the radish is more exciting, but the fire of the radish is a cold fire, the fire of dissatisfaction, not that of passion. Tomatoes are at least lively fresh, but tomatoes are tinged with a hint of frivolity. Beets are dead serious."

The beet, also known as red beet, beetroot, or simply beet, is a serious vegetable? Absolutely. It is earthy and often unremarkable, something that people ate in winter because there was hardly anything else available, a peasant vegetable. Beets may be intense, but they do not stand out.
The same applies to Musc Amarante. The scent is individual, something that not everyone wears, but it does not overwhelm anyone. I must confess that I mainly know beets pickled from a jar and therefore do not really know how the actual beet smells (note to self: discreetly sniff at the supermarket without making people think I'm silly), but I will just assume for a moment that what I perceive as pleasantly earthy and down-to-earth, with a slight unobtrusive sweetness, is the beet. This remains present throughout, but towards the end, it is increasingly caressed by a gentle, also unobtrusive sweetness.

The perfume is an understatement, but a successful one! It smells of groundedness, elegant modesty, in short, of someone who is at peace with themselves and the world. Someone who is content without having to shout it out to the world. In the aforementioned novel "Pan Aroma," the search for the recipe of a divine perfume is central, and the beet plays a crucial role as a component. And perhaps it is precisely in this "serious groundedness" of the beet that the divinity lies, for I think the world would indeed be a better place if we all were a little more like Musc Amarante.

Vegetable Garden, Part II…..
MUSC AMARANTE is another fragrance from the new "Le Potager" series, which is dedicated to individual vegetables……

Here, it is the Beetroot.

The scent starts citrusy-fruity and slightly peppery……after just a few seconds, the Beetroot joins in with a distinctly pleasant earthy and subtly sweet note……

This earth does not remind one of a grave, nor of musty decay…..

Rather, this earth exudes the rich-aromatic scent of dark potting soil that has just been freshly raked……

Fine Ambrette and silky Musk "air out" and "lift" the darker earthy tones……

According to the manufacturer's specifications, Vetiver and Ambergris are also included as additional fragrance components in MUSC AMARANTE…..

I can perceive the Vetiver quite well at the base in the form of a lasting freshness…..though it does not stand out prominently…….

Ambergris, on the other hand, I cannot perceive in isolation…….it may reveal itself in the gentle, soft, and rather dark character of the fragrance……

Despite its earthy character, MUSC AMARANTE remains consistently delicate and airy……

Like IRIS DE GRIS from the "Le Potager" series, this fragrance also becomes intimately and almost completely "transparent" within a maximum of 2 hours……

What remains is merely a delicate diffuse veil that only faintly recalls the fulminant opening……

Perfectly captured, earthy, soft beetroot. Elegant and beautiful.

Beetroot, dirt, rainforest, soft musk... The earthy, more citrus vetiver. Beautiful colour too :)

Captures all the aspects of beetroot being earthy/fruity/zingy/fresh/savoury but in an approachable modern way. Addictive and delicious.

This feels more modern to me. The beetroot could also be a fruit that blends with the musk into a subtly sweet mélange.

Baby beet
stretch towards the bergamot sun,
then you will grow big and strong.
Also herbal,
but not like the iris.

Heavy damp earth, a hint of iron, more vegetable garden than cellar. The name made me expect something completely different. For patchy earth pig fans.

Delicate beetroot seasoned with a pinch of pepper + freshly pulled from the earth. Dark, ripe garden soil. Drifts away on lightly sweet musk.

The beetroot comes through very well. Just right, because it feels so transparent. Overall, vegetable light scents in this line, fresh, delicate.

Musk cocktail of peppery-metallic freshness & silky texture, a delicate rose adds color, I can convince myself of the root. Fine.
