Yet Another Cool Water Clone...
GrigioPerla opens with an accord that immediately calls to mind the scent of Cool Water with a nice soapy herbal lavender and bergamot composition comprising the top notes before a strong anise accord takes the fore in the heart notes and pretty much remains there through the rest the scent's duration mixing with amber in the base, conveying a more barbershop Rive Gauche fougere vibe. Longevity and projection are both excellent.

When I first tried on my sample, I thought I had sprayed Cool Water on by mistake as the similarity is quite notable. That said, GrigioPerla does at least distance itself somewhat from its obvious target by veering off to the barbershop vein in its heart and dry-down without completely losing track of where it initially was headed. After smelling so many Cool Water (well really Green Irish Tweed) clones over the years, it is hard to get excited about yet another one so many years later... Maybe when this first came out in the early nineties it would have been more impressive, but while I can appreciate the effort that went into GrigioPerla its lack of originality hurts my overall impression of it, and quite frankly vintage Cool Water and Green Irish Tweed both smell better. If you want to clone something, you have to distinguish yourself, and sadly I don't think this does. I give GrigioPerla which does at least smell good, an above average 3 out of 5 star rating.

The signature

A Rare Gray Pearl
Men's hearts race when they hear La Perla. It stands for sexy lingerie and underwear made in Bella Italia like hardly any other brand. But La Perla also represents seductive swimwear, elegant men's underwear, and fantastic perfumes. With Grigioperla, it has created one of my favorite scents from the 1990s.

A velvety gray box with silver lettering. A classically shaped bottle, the corners perfectly rounded, featuring a textured grip and a prominent inscription on the front. The whole thing is in a smoky gray that shimmers into a rich green when light hits it. It looks discreet, elegant, and old-school.

Freshness is the first thing that greets you with this fragrance. Bergamot clearly dominates, with anise providing supportive notes, but without the licorice undertone. Then comes everything that the Mediterranean herb garden has to offer: basil, lavender, coriander, geranium, rosemary, clove, and sage. The spicy notes become strong, but only lavender and anise manage to hold their ground against the bergamot. In the base, you mainly sense the oak moss, leather, and especially sandalwood and cedar. Musk and amber are only detectable in the drydown's afterglow.

With this spicy-woody freshness, I still don't know what to primarily categorize the scent as, since I wear it for sports, going out, and at the office. It performs excellently in all activities and shows its best side. Long-lasting freshness during sports, pleasantly spicy in the office, and distinctly masculine in the bar and club at night. The fragrance showcases its pronounced sillage and its indescribable longevity. The scent is still fully present even after a night of dancing in the techno bunker, which I can only say about a few fragrances. My best friend, also a fragrance junkie, now affectionately calls Grigioperla old-school; I clearly consider it a child of the early 1990s, but I still find it absolutely contemporary today, even though it doesn't cater to any of the current sweet trends.

Unfortunately, the fragrance has been discontinued, but it can still be found online at reasonable prices, and it tends not to turn. An absolute insider tip!

This gray pearl was already rare in the 1990s and has remained dear and precious to me to this day. A true treasure!

Fresh to grey
I've been circling around this fragrance for a while now, especially during a trip to Italy. On one hand, there have been repeated references to classic sporty scents from the 80s, while on the other hand, I find the design of the packaging straightforward and beautiful - although it has been called cheap, I think it is old-school timeless in the best sense.
The opening phase is fresh-spicy and somehow feels familiar, although I can't pinpoint why.
It might just be a blend of well-known and tried-and-true ingredients of a fresh top note from the late 80s. As it develops, a dark greenness reminiscent of Krizia Uomo emerges, merging with the fresh start into a dark green, more serious 80s sporty scent.

Then something happens that doesn't quite fit for me: after the fresh opening, everything suddenly becomes a bit sweet and agreeable, and it stays there. Then comes a longer dry spell, where a grey, somewhat dull lavender note takes over, reminding me of D&G pour homme or Sergio Tacchini Sport Extreme, which didn't excite me due to their somewhat rough, scratchy base.
In the end, it becomes quite nicely woody-elegant again, but by then the train has already left a bit.

All in all, it feels like a somewhat more elaborate, nobler version of Tacchini Sport Extreme. With the same criticisms...

The constant movement between fresh-spicy, cool-green, then sweet, later somewhat stoic and humorless is not really my thing, even if it is well done.
I find something like Lacoste's Land, Biagiotti Uomo, Boss Sport, or even the original Armani (all without the strange sweet twist) to be much more interesting and coherent when it comes to the theme of fresh and spicy.

But the admirer probably just says: that's how it is meant to be.

Versatile
An all-rounder in barbershop tradition presents itself. It starts off quite sporty and vibrant with spicy accents. When it reaches the base, you can smell some leather, oak moss, amber, but above all sandalwood as far as the nose can detect. I must admit that there is a bit too much sandalwood for my liking, which doesn't make me entirely happy. Longevity and performance get everything right.
So I can give it a solid 80%, as Grigioperla truly deserves it overall.

Sammy :-)

The "Intense Edition" edt has a more (synthetically) pronounced Tonka and Lavender than regular edt. Differently balanced notes than Reg.

A compliment gather, everyone was asking me what I was wearing. It is fresh, fougère, with dominant green and aromatic notes. Sillage bomb!

It lag behind its time. More of an 80s fougère. Herbal, green, very spicy, and reminiscent of aftershave. It has to suit the wearer.

Sporty, mossy fresh. Smells really classic. I think of my freshly shaved dad - shaved except for his mustache.

Not as drab as the name and bottle suggest: fluffy moss and fresh herbs that actually belong in the 80s.

A fragrance with a captivating opening chord. Fresh, pleasantly spicy, and with a hint of "expensive soap" in the drydown.

A traditional Italian barbershop scent with high recognition. Good sillage and longevity, and wonderful on mild evenings.

Slim all-rounder on the edge of old school. I dare say there's no synthetic involved here...
