The Opposite Of The Roar You Expect From A Lion...
Let Me Play the Lion smells primarily of a very light and subtle minimalist composition of cedar and incense at its heart, with a slightly more authoritative sandalwood and ambergris dry-down. The scent nearly disappears immediately after initial application, and then reappears thirty minutes later. That said, even when it *does* reappear, the appearance is so quiet and subtle that you barely know you are wearing a scent at all until the dry-down stage where it shows its metal just a hair... Doyen is an extremely talented nose, and Let Me Play the Lion does smell innovative and quite good for what it is worth, but her talents are being somewhat wasted here. Projection is non-existent and longevity is average. Nice scent that is worth a sniff, but not nice enough to warrant a full bottle purchase, IMO. 3 stars out of 5.

Calm Before the Storm…
In 2004, photography became more than just a hobby for me. Not a profession, but still a part of it. Around the same time, my interest in fragrances deepened. One of my photographic subjects back then was a stone lion - and one of my first scents, beyond the well-known paths, was "Let Me Play The Lion". Even today, I pass by this lion, actually there are two, at the Nußdorfer Wehr in Vienna while running - and even today "Let Me Play The Lion" touches me.

"Let Me Play The Lion" is wood in the broadest sense, smoky, spicy, shimmering, abstract, like a cloud of dust that still brings rain. More texture than scent. Intangible and meditative.

"Let Me Play The Lion" is a feel-good fragrance that harbors something threatening, something mysterious, sensual, contradictory. LMPTL is dry, but with a looming humidity, perhaps like a storm announcing itself on a hot summer day.

An association that is also confirmed by the LesNez description text (in addition to the reference to Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"):

„Scents of dusty trails,
Of lightly sweetened ochre,
Of sun-weathered wood,
Of silence swept by mild breezes,
Of skies open like an endless azure cut oozing signs
of the coming storm.“

"Let Me Play The Lion" means skin, dust, burning wood and - although not a summer scent in the strict sense - meditative calm during a summer vacation. I smell resinous conifers, fine, cooling green notes, but also sweet amber, balsamic, papery, dusty, warm. There is some ginger, some anise, vetiver, and sometimes floral facets. Undoubtedly, mainly synthetic fragrance materials are used, and, as I perceive it, free from misguided reservations, yet also not merely for self-serving purposes or purely for economic reasons. Great. [*]

Location: I could wear "Let Me Play The Lion" in situations where I would otherwise reach for "Gucci pour Homme" (I) - but the somewhat unpredictable endurance and strength of the lion contradicts this, both fluctuate in my perception between acceptable and good, and the fact that "Let Me Play The Lion" is more minimalist and unconventional, thus less pleasing and not so distinctly refined. I could also wear "Let Me Play The Lion" instead of "No. 02 - L'Air du Désert Marocain" or "L'Homme Sage", although the latter lacks the meditative aspect, this inner calm of "Let Me Play The Lion". "No. 02 - L'Air du Désert Marocain" is almost opulent in comparison, "L'Homme Sage" at least shares with "Let Me Play The Lion" the almost cloudy texture - they are indeed kindred spirits in that respect.

"Let Me Play The Lion" is beautiful. Thank you, Isabelle Doyen and René Schifferle.

Edit 10.03.2014: [*] Based on a recommendation from Siebter, I took another closer look at Erik Kormann's blog. Besides many worthwhile contributions, there is also a short but insightful article about LMPTL (the comments are interesting too, keyword "Timber Propanol"), www.aromatisches-blog.de/2008/09/29/let-me-play-the-lion-leznez-parfums.

Edit 18.08.2018: Even though I would probably approach my comment differently today, LMPTL is still one of my absolute favorites, a fragrance that touches me, that can transport me to a place of longing. What becomes clearer to me after all these years is how far ahead LMPTL was back then, how something is created here with what means, that is truly remarkable in its consistency.

Dirty Wood
Let me play the Lion is a demanding and complicated fragrance. It presents itself as somewhat standing between the common categories. To make matters worse, the fragrance pyramid is only partially known. Spices, wood, nutmeg, anise, curry I have read, are supposed to be in there.

Anyway, to me, LMPTL presents itself as a spicy-woody scent with earthy undertones. Really nothing light. After an initial scent chaos settles down, spices become perceptible. Nutmeg comes through, anise only faintly. A curry or cumin note is understandable. It makes the fragrance a bit dirty. Dusty-dry woods were chosen for this scent. They smell somewhat like sawdust.

I don't particularly like this perfume. The emphasis is too much on dusty wood for me. I see layers of wooden planks that are mixed with dust and dirt. Nothing noble, more like construction wood lying around somewhere. The spices don't improve it either. It lacks citrus and floral notes to brighten the fragrance a bit. Only the very faintly present anise is a glimmer of hope and provides some liveliness. As weak as it is, it is the only thing that holds the fragrance together. In its defense, I can say that the association of dry desert warmth is also justifiable here. Well, so it's not all bad, but somehow the inspiration is still missing. You don't want to touch dirty wooden planks, so why would you want to spray yourself with it?

Drought
like "L'Antimatiere," this perfume also thrives on associations that it
evokes: dust, dryness, desert, warmth;
far removed from any classification, gender affiliation, or categorization
