Skanky love
Oud is a note that is relatively new to me. As I strolled through the department store, I noticed Oud 27 and thought that it would be the perfect moment to experience oud, which is either a love it or hate it.

Oud 27 opened quite strong and edgy, however despite its rather loud entrance, I sensed that I was falling in love already.

In my words, Oud 27 smells like rich, resinous woods with a touch of spicy earthiness and fragrant smoke. It's not your typical run-of-the-mill type scent, it is very unique and sits more on the masculine side of things.

I'm a girly-girl, however I love wearing this. The scent makes me feel in control and sexy, in a bad-girl way.

This fragrance has a somewhat leathery feel, which reminds me of Bandit by Robert Piguet, however I wouldn't say that they are very alike in scent. There really isn't anything like it.

The earthiness does create an almost dirty feel, which can be off-putting for some. Oud 27 is very raw and I would say, shocking. It actually smells a little bit like sex.

I adore Le Labo's Oud 27. It is absolute perfection to my nose. The amazing lasting strength and sillage only adds to this fragrance's impressiveness.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a bottle of this sitting on my dresser very soon.

Does Authentic Oud smell like Bandaids and Shoe Polish?
I'm a real gringo when it comes to oud. My concept derives solely from the perfumes in which it is said to figure and which I happen to have sniffed. My suspicion is that Le Labo OUD 27 is the answer to those who so often complain about oudless oud perfumes. The heavy, rubbery and almost harsh demeanor of this perfume leads me to believe that this may in fact be the real thing. Why else make a perfume which smells as this one does, if not to satisfy the yearnings for an authentic oud experience?

The naysayers have compared OUD 27 to Bandaids and shoe polish, and I do not disagree. This perfume may serve as a litmus test to true oud appreciation. I suspect that this would probably smell great blended with a powerful dose of rose, but as an unadorned presentation of oud--or so it seems--I do not find it very pleasant at all.

What I have learned through this Le Labo oud experience is that I probably need some more training before I'll be able to appreciate the real thing--assuming that this is genuine oud and not simply some overwrought and ill-conceived synthetic attempt at mimicry...

For now, I think it's safe to say that I still prefer the wimpy Westernized oud perfumes.

Like ink and wet plastic, but good
Oud 27 smells like rotting wood and sour plastic, with a scalpy smear of costus thrown in for good measure. Most perceive Oud 27’s opening to be a little offensive (Luca Turin calls it ‘pornographic’), but it accurately mimics some naturally-occurring facets of real oud oil. Specifically, it reproduces the scent of necrotic decay brought about by the fungal infection that consumes the healthy parts of wood, turning them into oleoresin. Oud 27 exaggerates this rot by a factor of ten, projecting it onto a huge canvas like in an open-air cinema.

The sour wetness of the aroma gradually dries out over the course of a wear, slowing evolving into a sweet, musky wood scent that smells like pulped cedar chips and sawdust at the bottom of a freshly-cleaned hamster cage. As the scent settles, it becomes easier to identify the individual components of the composition, namely a red berry note, saffron, cedarwood, and a salty, almost hammy guaiacol. A fun ride, sure, but perhaps not the easiest fragrance to slap on and forget about it. Ain’t nobody going to be wearing Oud 27 on a first date.

Nice oud but too floral perhaps?
Oud 27 is super skanky at first, like pure, fresh, sharp, cat pee, coupled with really pungent oud. I like it a lot, but at the same time there is a floralcy to it that I'm not sure I jive with. I wish it was just woody and skanky, and not floral. I have seen rose mentioned on other sites (I do not see it above), and rose is definitely what I smell. It smells a little too much like an Arabian fragrance mixed with some kind of old-fashioned rose fragrance, like Tea Rose (sorry folks, I never liked Tea Rose. It smelled like dried garden weeds to me, and too mature). I would need to wear it a few more times to decide whether a full bottle is wanted or not. I think it's an amazing fragrance, even if not to my taste. Like 9/10 amazing, so try it if you are curious.

Wood from the Lab - Part 1 (Oud)
Alongside the unbearable tropical humidity of Berlin's heat, it was probably also the frustration from the notoriously poor longevity of all the Le Labo fragrances I have tried so far that led me to deliver a borderline idiotic stream of consciousness instead of a serious review for Neroli 36. Unfortunately, my hope that the wood scents would last longer than the citrus ones has proven to be in vain.

When spraying about half of a sample vial, i.e. 0.75 ml or about 10 small sprays on my neck and wrist (I don't think that's being stingy, right?), I must honestly say, both with "Oud 27" and "Santal 33," after four hours it's game over, no more fun, the scent is gone. And this refers to a close-to-skin residual aura. The projection is long gone before that. My nose is fine, as testing other fragrances shows (and my wife confirms my findings), the samples are not spoiled. What are they doing? Adding a secret ingredient to all their fragrances that activates four hours after application and triggers a scent self-destruction?

I don't care, I won't be discouraged and will keep commenting, even if I'm getting my revenge now. I'm doing the same with my comments and using filler! I will recycle this introductory part here for "Santal 33"!

Now to the point: The ingredient list with its three woods (oud, guaiac, cedar) and various usual suspects (especially frankincense and patchouli) initially sounds undeniably brutal: Hit over the head with a wooden baseball bat and then incense with some dark stuff. Yatagan captured this with a great statement; he feels the scent exactly that way. Many others here feel similarly.

I don't. Oud 27 initially blows a handful of dry sawdust in my face; whether it's oud or a sawed-up Ivar shelf from Ikea is less clear to me. After the shock subsides after about a minute, it calms down, and the candidate becomes unusually friendly and soft for an oud scent.

I find nothing dark or threatening here (the darkest thing that comes to mind is a nicely spicy but also slightly sweet forest honey). Frankincense is at most unburned, held in a gentle, soft hand, so that the resin releases some aroma under the influence of body heat. Animalic at worst briefly resembles a wet dog, but mostly more like the imagined body scent of a fluffy squirrel baby (isn't that sweet?). And not like what one typically imagines with oud-animalic (rutting wapiti deer, tiger pee, or whatever). The wood is most reminiscent of damp, green young wood. And definitely, as some previous reviewers have noted, a nonspecific but equally unmistakable, gentle, almost creamy fruit note. It may be that it comes from the saffron in combination with some chemistry (oops, Le Labo supposedly only uses natural essences, but why are they called Le Labo and not Le Plantage or something?), it may be that among the 27 ingredients (which are not all named) there is also a plum or something similar hidden away.

Conclusion: An annoyingly ephemeral, but quite beautiful, surprisingly good-natured, honeyed (or honey-like), moist woody, fluffy-plum saffron-oud.

I love all kinds of Oud... and even I struggled with this one. The Civet makes it too feral. Do you want to smell like a dangerous wildcat?

This is funky, but in all the wrong ways…it smells like a wet animal and some urine. And there is a massive dose of synthetic oud.

Initially pungent smoky-spicy, this rather challenging animalic/creamy leathery fragrance slowly settles to a more gentle earthy-woody base.

I was promised Oud 27 would smell like an impressively dirty diaper. This did not disappoint.

Oud 27 is a 2-week-old dish rag in the Tenderloin; Limette 37 is a day-old sponge in a posh Marina kitchen after a lime dessert and a shave.

Dank, sour woods and a healthy dose of earthy patchouli. Dries to a leathery skin scent. The quintessential stinky "barnyard" oud.
