Sour and Off-Putting
Warning: Not a favorable review. I was recently in Sephora and saw the little bag of perfume and decided to try it on. I wasn't impressed with the initial spray and walked around shopping. The smell was getting more and more sour, turning minute-by-minute. Withing half an hour, it had turned into a rancid after-sex smell. You know the kind. Well, that can be good or bad, depending on where you wear the perfume and actually, how it starts out. But if the entire journey of it isn't good, for me, it's not purchase-worthy. The manager came on the floor, who is a friend of mine, and yelled over to me to come and test the new Marc Jacobs perfume because she needed my opinion. She told me that a number of her girls and herself felt there was a minty feel to it, but mint was not listed in the notes. Why was she getting that, she asked. I had no idea, judging from the notes, but I asked her to smell my wrist. She did, her eyes opened up, and she hesitated to say what she smelled. But she did say, "That doesn't smell good on you..." I asked her what does it remind you of?" She laughed and said "Sex". And then she asked how could that be? What I offered was that some perfumes have a certain chemical composition when mixed with a person's skin to produce certain aromas to create various effects. That was the easy answer. I explained that some of the earthiness came from the orris root, saffron and jasmine. Unfortunately, I didn't think this was what Marc Jacobs was going for. Imari Elixir and Agent Provocateur L'Agent have the same identical effect for me. On the up side, I think the bottle is different and I like it. Oh well, not every perfume will be a winner for everyone.

this is a very bad time
Imagine you won a contest run by your local radio station, you know the one with the obnoxious sexist pig morning show duo, generically called something like "Big Dude Bro and the Little Vermin." Yeah, so you--lucky you!--entered this contest where the prize was the privilege of getting to spend the night in a local spot purported to be haunted. Great, right?! Well, turns out it's just a sketchy vape shop and the "ghost" is like, how someone saw Jesus's face in a baked potato or something. And that actually happened next door in the crusty diner. The moment you walk in the door you are assaulted by the sickening aroma of maple syrup vape juice, a cloying waft from an empty rum raisin ice cream container crawling with many-legged insects, and the dusty fumes of your meanest ancestor's cherry pipe tobacco. Was it a haunting or was it Marc Jacobs Decadence? You conclude that while you did not experience anything in the slightest bit supernatural, this vile combination of notes will certainly haunt you for the rest of your days.

Beautiful decadence.
From my point of view, it is a wonderfully different perfume, full of nuances that are transformed at times.
Its beauty is in the mystery that surrounds it. A perfume that borders on addiction... a real pleasure to smell.
Its name does not seem appropriate to me, since decadence is synonymous with loss of strength and intensity and I can assure you that this perfume is anything but decadent, quite the opposite, it intensifies and deepens with the passing of the hours.
The output is slightly sweet and acidic thanks to the plum, but the wood is already beginning to be felt, a sweet almond wood.
Saffron provides a slightly metallic nuance.
The flowers are perceived very subtly, because the fragrance becomes more and more smoky and dark.
It is an ideal perfume for the cold months, since in summer it could overwhelm the wearer and the people around him.
In general, it is a perfume with an overwhelming personality that makes you feel sure of yourself.

The standout in Marc Jacob's collection
I still can't believe they discontinued the whole Decadence collection. Sure, it doesn't really fit into the Marc Jacobs lineup between all the light fruity florals, and the bottle design is very polarizing (I find it ugly), but the actual perfume was one of the most unique feminine designer releases of the 2010s and has influenced many other creations.

The most exciting thing about Decadence is how it has so many contrasts and contradictions. Fruity, sweet plum and warm amber are the main notes, supported by rose and jasmine. So far, so good, not too unusual for a floriental. But the papyrus and vetiver add intense dark green notes that give the fragrance a twist. The texture feels juicy and watery, and I kind of understand how this, in combination with the warmth of amber, the saffron and the sharp greenery, can come across as pickle water to some people - even though I don't agree. It isn't savory or sour and therefore doesn't smell like pickles to me. Instead I get a powdery layer on top of everything, which is obviously coming from the iris, but feels like a dusting of powdered sugar. Very interesting mixed with the vetiver, saffron, papyrus and plum.

I never had a desire to own or wear Decadence, I think it wouldn't suit me, but I still think it was a good one and am disappointed it's gone.

Saffron can save the day
Saffron is one of my favourite notes, and Decadence is in my top three of saffron scents. It is also in my top five of all scents. I am not sure why I respond so positively to saffron - as I do with ginger - but to me “Saffron can save the day!”
I remember the first time I smelled Decadence. It was given to me as a birthday gift and when I unwrapped it I immediately thought: oh no, not a Marc Jacobs’s fragrance! I have always considered MJ’s scents a bit too dull and predictable. Really pleasing but uninteresting. I knew Daisy, Dot, Honey and Lola. Lola I liked. Luckily there was a tester together with the box and I sprayed it a few days later. Wauw…!
The saffron note is one of the warmest and likeable I have tried. Like in Oriflame Dancing Lady Hypnotic Night, Lancôme Magnifique and Agent Provocateur this scent is shaped and defined by the saffron note. And it is skillfully done.
The spicy/warm/sweet beginning of this unique journey feels like sitting close to a fireplace and slowly sensing the heat increasingly intensifying on my skin. Then it moves to a more floral destination, keeping the spicy feeling but loosing the sweetness of the plum. The rose becomes more explicit and it works well with the saffron. Finally after many hours it becomes more subtle and woody. But as a good friend saffron is there all the time.
The colour of the bottle is gorgeous. I love green in all tones and this dark emerald forest green suits the fragrance so well. I never add the top when it is on my shelf. I am not a huge fan of animal inspired patterns so the imitated snakeskin is left in the box. But decadence is part of my rotation routine and I wear it often.

In the designer world, this stands out among the usual generic category: dark with plum notes and decent longevity.
