Maple glazed bacon, a roaring bonfire & a person wearing clean floral perfume
I can’t make up my mind how I feel about this one. When I first smelled it, I gasped because something about it is really impressive and beautiful…but at the same time, I found myself repulsed as I realised it smelled exactly like maple syrup and bacon - a delicious breakfast combo but not something I want to wear on my body.

I’m guessing the maple syrup note I’m detecting is from the rum and oak barrels. Aside from that, what I get (on both paper and skin) is allll smoke with a hint of soapy floral. I don’t get any leather or herbs or spices; and it’s only woody insofar as the wood is burning. It’s quite an odd combination because it smells like someone freshly showered and wearing a pretty, feminine floral perfume standing besides a roaring bonfire. Yet it somehow works. In the drydown, the vanilla-woodiness comes out more and the smoke is turned down a bit.

Although it’s a beautiful composition, this just doesn’t feel like “me”. It’s too sweet and reminiscent of breakfast and I keep alternating between thinking it smells nice and being vaguely nauseated. I think this confirms for me that rum is a note I should avoid. I never have good luck with rum fragrances (apart from Zoologist Rhinoceros, which is in a class of its own). For what it’s worth, this one is a LOT sweeter and stickier and smokier than Rhino, less herbal and fresh.

This fragrance is fairly strong for the first hour, but not as strong as I expected it to be (which is a good thing). 6 hours later, I’m still getting very faint whiffs of it when I move, but it’s mostly a skin scent.

Truly Distinctive Scent
MiN New York Scent Stories Vol.1/Ch.06 - Barrel is a captivating blend that opens with a unique mix of absinthe, coriander, and pink pepper. The heart reveals a warm, rich fusion of myrrh, orange blossom, and rum. As it settles, the base notes of oak barrel, leather, vanilla, patchouli, and vetiver create a deep, complex finish that lingers beautifully. A truly distinctive scent.

Uninspired fruity smokiness
Maybe it would have been better for me not to know that Julien Rasquinet composed MiN line, because nearly every scent I try from this brand smells to me like a rushed sketch of other fragrances Rasquinet composed for other brands. Like if MiN decided to produce a series of trials and incomplete versions the nose then developed for other clients. Barrel seems to me something halfway Bois d’ascèse and several boozy-fruity scents, basically the Bois just with a sweet fruity-floral note and a suede-amber base which provides a bit of warmth and “silkiness”. But basically that’s that, another variation on that futuristic, super-dry, kind of dark “incense-ash-woody” synthetic accord. Say, Naomi Goodsir’s Bois d’ascèse meets Naomi Goodsir’s Cuir Velours. With a bit of two Masque scents, Tango and Russian Tea (I know Rasquinet didn't compose all of these, eh!). Nothing more than just nice for me, with a quite cheap drydown (dry, synthetic, quite light and endlessly linear) which is fine, but utterly redundant if you already own some of the abovementioned scents. And *outrageously* priced for the quality and the creativity (both tending to the lower end here, in my opinion).

Earthbound Intoxication Over Velvet White.
In my part of the world we are blanketed (blanketed is being *very* kind) in an obscene amount of snow. I have been yearning for any bit of warmth I can possibly latch onto, be it the assuaging embrace of a favourite sweater, something a bit more abstract like the aureate hues of a Klimt panting or the sensation of being enveloped by the vapours of a precious fragrant elixir. A notion of comfort within the glacial sting of a frigid Canadian winter. I decided to have a shuffle through my samples and happened upon a vial of Barrel. As I sprayed it on my skin I was met with an intoxicating menagerie of what to my nose smells of dark rum and oak delicately underscored with a rustic accord of soil and peat. It feels familiar but like a memory which you cannot decipher, uncertain if it were from a dream or from reality. Tuberose and orange blossom which were initially obscured by an unctuous, boozy haze then emerge and serve as an incredibly beautiful juxtaposition to the rigid masculinity of the opening. Wisps of soft smoke dance about their velvet white petals until they recede and make way for a sublimely comforting base of vetiver who’s blades have been steeped in luxuriant vanilla. There is a distinct earthiness which remains and keeps the dry down from registering as confectionary, drawing forth the most raw and primal facets of a note who’s usual role is the infusion of a luscious dessert. I think it’s safe to say that I am a fan because I’ve managed to drain my sample completely dry today, reliving the exquisite incipience over and over again. Top marks for Barrel, an unconventional injection of incandescence into a rather blustery winter's day.

Strong wood smoke with maple syrup + a weirdly fresh, clean, soapy floral in the background. Reminiscent of maple glazed bacon. No leather..

Herb-spicy green contrasts with a sweet-soft base (vanilla * rum?). Also birch tar (leather note?). But all of this is moderate and gentle.

Starts with a lot of alcohol + smoke in a pub. Luckily, it’s only brief. Then warm, soft + harmonious with myrrh, leather, rum + wood. Slightly sweet.

I can only agree with many here - the scent is not what it suggests. Absinthe/leather/rum is just the start; it quickly becomes floral and sweet.

Wears a full beard in the first 10 minutes: smoky whisky, smoldering embers. Then it gets softer, so it works on me after all.

The opening smells like a smoky bouquet, then becomes softer, slightly sweeter, with a hint of leather, rum, and myrrh.

Floral aldehyde bomb with a vintage feel and modern accents of vanilla and rum. This makes it totally unisex and very harmonious.
