Sweet Carnations!
Miller Harris FLEUR ORIENTAL is a sweet and spicy perfume which stands out from the crowd with its combination of vanilla and carnation. The scent also seems somewhat woody to my nose, though no woods are listed as notes. I don't think that I have ever smelled a carnation-centric scent quite this sweet. I don't think that it is too sweet, but it's definitely very different from some of the carnation-clove perfumes I've sniffed (including Caron BELLODGIA).

FLEUR ORIENTAL smells multilayered and complex, and the ingredients seem to be very good, as nothing disintegrates at all. This is the quality which I expect from a niche house, and I am beginning to understand why Lyn Harris has such a following...

Familiar, With A Twist...
I was taken aback this morning when I decided to test my new sample of Fleur Oriental. I had ordered three samples from this house, when I purchased my LADDM. I liked the reputation of this house, and read through most of the descriptions, before choosing my new samples.
The notes in this fragrance are very attractive, with the exception of the carnation. Fortunately, this carnation comes across like a mild cinnamon. When I sprayed on my wrist, and arm, I walked around for a few minuets, and Bang! I just couldn't believe how similar it is to my Tauer Une Rose Chypree! A slightly fresher opening, but, almost identical! This is only the opening mind you, not the whole development). I was so convinced it was just like my Tauer, I sprayed both fragrances on paper strips. On the paper strips, the Tauer opening is much more intense than the Fleur Oriental, but, they are really close! It smells much more like the Rose Chypree on my skin though.
Well, that was a good start to the journey! When the middle notes started to develop, I was very impressed, as the floral notes compliment each other perfectly!. Then came the wonderful dry down..Such a lovely ending..just the right amount of vanilla, warmed through by the rich amber. This is a vintage smelling fragrance, without being overbearing or complex. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a nice and genuine Oriental floral. Of course, it boosted my opinion of it, as it was truly familiar, with a twist!

Shalimar's Ripe Groupie
Shalimar is definitely a cool rockstar, no question,
but must one copy him directly, not just vaguely?

Perhaps one should consider you as a homage,
for you are not brazen, but rather yearning.

Animalic vanilla, flowers from warm incense,
at times you are as sweetly powdery as fine dust.

A truly cozy scent, protective from minute to minute,
this is definitely more pony than a sassy mare.

For the mustiness fades faster than you can say Guerlain,
to compare, some will have to ask their grandma then.

A feeling as if oriental flowers grow from your skin,
the scent is good & beautiful, I don't want to tease you.

A bow to a legend, a second-tier Shalimar,
the fragrance works best in nature, not for emotionless stock sharks.

When You Come Close to Me ...
Lyn Harris opens the door to a special world with this fragrance from the very first second.
Not to the Orient, but to the salons of the modern woman from a hundred years ago - to make the vibrant life appealing even in the third millennium.
Thus, my first reaction was: You smell like Habanita, a bit like L'Heure Bleue, Shem-el-Nessim or Geisha Noire. Strong jasmine (a main note from start to finish) harmonized with rose and on an amber trip. The heart note intensifies with all sorts of additions at the start. And then the composition slowly fades, even the jasmine joins in, although it remains clearly recognizable. The fragrance almost returns to the wearer unchanged; this contemporary shift comes as a surprise to me, but it has something very personal: I know it’s there, the wild and sensual, but I don’t carry it in front of me. It’s not my secret, but you have to be close to me to perceive it.

Oriental - that is exactly what this fragrance is. Floral too, without being a floriental, and it is certainly not a floral scent.
The combination of these fragrance notes promises the discerning perfume lover an opulent olfactory experience in 90% of all cases. For example: Habanita is more floral and turns dark and dirty; with L'Heure Bleue, neroli hits hard at first, it is spicier and greener. This combination has produced in the 80s: Quelques Fleurs L'Original, which is much more floral; Escada Original, Balahé and Joop Berlin were also very floral, having a lot of everything and even wood added. There are hardly any subtle ones, maybe Seathalasso, which hides these notes behind citrus-creamy.

So, for those who like these fragrance notes and direction, but find the "old" calibers too intense: TEST! Here is a fragrance that fits into more subtle times and deserves the name perfume. If the beginning is still too intense for you: enjoy, soak in the mood and drape yourself in it. By the time you reach your appointment/date, it will be playfully just with you.

Thanks to WRoth, the journey of the sample from spring-like South Tyrol to me was worth it!

Too early, too early, too early!!!!
How beautiful this Miller Harris could be. Wonderful components, fantastic sillage, enormous longevity, and then this!

Very briefly, but very very briefly, at the beginning of the application I can smell the little flowers. Aaaaaaah what a lovely floral scent, herrl.....

But way too early, even before I can finish my thought, amber and musk hit me with such force that I fear I might suffocate in the powder cloud.

What’s up with that, guys? Can’t you behave? What kind of way is that to crush all the lovely flowers like this??? It’s just not right!

But no chance, the two are in agreement and bring in the heliotrope for support, making it all nice and sweet. The three then throw a party and stomp happily on the glorious flowers until all that’s left is an unrecognizable mass of bits.

If I hold my arm veeeeeery far away, a tiny bit of the floral note still comes through, but up close and especially directly on the skin, there’s nothing left of the beautiful flowers.

Basically a well-made fragrance, if you overlook the dominance of the sweet spice note. A little less sweetness and spice and a little more flowers, and it would be a brilliantly beautiful scent that I would definitely want to have. But as it stands, it remains a sample test...

Thank you very much, dear Lumi, for this testing opportunity.

To be honest, I only smell heliotrope here. Although "only" isn't meant negatively, as I really like this rather dense +

Gentle oriental with a beautiful floral blend. Balsamic, resinous, spicy + a human touch of musk. Light sweetness. I like it.

Spicy-powdery. Floral notes fade, except for the hot clove spice. Dominated by
animalic musk, smoky vanilla, amber & Helio.

Like Scheherazade telling tales from 1001 Nights, this scent is oriental, vibrant, spicy, sweet, floral-heavy, and never boring.

My beloved scent! I stumbled upon Bitter Sweet, George Gina & Lucy - it has a strong resemblance to it, so happy... :-)
