A Hero for Boys
I love the original idea of the Alla Corte del Re: sets of 3 beautiful fragrances each, coming in a nice parcel and with an instructive brochure about perfumery basics. Alla Corte del Re was originally aimed a teenage boys and girls, but the marketing of Nobile 1942 has become somewhat more general by now. Anyway, niche brand fragrances seem to me beyond reach for most teenagers, and I suppose it is the parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents who have been the real customers. But how many of those sets have actually found their way into the possession of juvenile future perfume lovers? Once you have a look at the beautiful box and take a spritz or two, you may as well decide to keep it for yourself!
Whereas the remarkable Cola was designed for parties and Robinson for “romantic” moments, Superhero has been introduced as an energizing fragrance, a morning wear at school if you are young enough. Being a somewhat sweetish oriental it may be considered the most youthful fragrance of the Cedro Atlas set. After all, it is those sweetish orientals the style brands like Diesel, Police, Puma or Mexx produce that teachers all over the world are being tortured with when they enter the classroom. Teenage boys have always preferred fragrances that make oneself being noticed.
It is hardly conceivable that one of the best brands of Italian niche perfumery should descend into the realms of mass marked perfumery. Their interpretation of a typical boy's oriental is better than that: free from gluey sweetness and synthetic appeal. Nevertheless, Superhero opens sweet enough. There is freesia and peach providing an ingratiating fruitiness in the top notes which reminds me a lot of MAOAM: a fruity chewing candy full of artificial aromas. However, the perfumer diluted everything down to that point that you will just have a faint idea of a beautiful fruit note. Like the other two of the set, also Superhero is a bit weaker than a standard Eau de Toilette which may prevent involuntary over-application.
The fruitiness sits on a creamy and amiable musk and tonka base. The cedar which should play a main part actually stands very much in the background. As the fruity top fades away within maybe one hour, the beautiful creamy base comes more into view providing a kind of milk-and-honey sensation on the skin. Depending on the actual age of its wearer you may even call it sexy. I can imagine that a few grandmas would love their little grand-sons smell as nice as that! Surely, Superhero has earned to be regarded as the most boyish perfume of the set.
But what are different ages when it comes to like a fragrance? I wore Superhero today, and I enjoyed it. A good portion of the musky base hung on all day. So, although the sillage is weak, the longevity is not.
Unfortunately, the Alla Corte del Re sets are not widespread. I admit I have always feared that Nobile 1942 would soon discontinue the series but by now, there are three sets out and Alla Corte del Re has a prominent place on their website. The very recommendable Cedro set is available in only a few online shops, and yes, you will have to buy blind. If you should find out that you do not like it, you can still pass it on to your sons and nephews!
