Ugly Duckling Becomes a Beautiful Swan
When applying "Little Stars," I had to be sparing because there isn't much left in the little bottle; someone else wants to try it after me.
I immediately smelled: "Yuck," something really animalistic with a slight smoky note. Jasmine and Ylang-Ylang were the main suspects I had in mind, uh no, kept about 30 cm away from my nose.
But what I read down here; I don't smell any of that. But then it occurred to me that it could be the Oud. Recently, I was able to test some apparently real Oud fragrances. They can initially smell very animalistic, slightly smoky, and then develop into a pleasantly warm scent with the other ingredients. You just have to wait.
So the two main suspects were allowed to air out and were not drowned in the wastewater with soap and water.
Then I first tested the lovely "Osafume." That works, all Olympic Orchids have a small sillage and don't bother if you wear one on the left and one on the right.
And lo and behold, now "Little Stars" smells very nice of a slightly smoky warm Oud with subtle flowers, a hint of coniferous wood, and a pinch of clove pepper that makes the Oud seem a bit more robust.
A scent for Oud fans. "Little Stars" can easily compete with Montale and Mancera Oud fragrances. The longevity is good, but the sillage does diminish after the peak of its development. "Little Stars" is a true oriental, very close to the skin. Another Olympic Orchid with an interesting progression.

the Star Riddle
For hours now, I have been puzzling over what could have prompted Ellen Covey to name this fragrance "Little Stars."
For hours, I have been rolling around associations that range from the dearest little children to the American "Stars and Stripes" to the pitch-black starry sky - only to finally realize that I must concede.
Whatever may lie behind the naming, it will remain a mystery that I cannot unravel, for nothing that comes to mind can be even remotely connected to "Little Stars."

Had I not read Turandot's wonderful commentary months before my personal encounter with "Little Stars," I would have approached the fragrance completely unprepared and without any glance at the ingredient list, and I would certainly have thought it was a children's perfume - savvy businesspeople have their sights set on the customers of tomorrow and the day after from the moment of birth.
However, I was a little forewarned and approached the test more in anticipation of a starry night in a cold desert - quite looking forward to such an experience, as desert scents had previously presented themselves to me as rather dry and hot rather than cool.
Tauer's desert air on ice - haaaach...

Not so fast - Mrs. Covey doesn't make it that easy for me.
Barely has the sample droplet touched my skin when a delicate sweet floral note reaches my nose, lasting exactly one second.
Immediately, an eucalyptus-like accord unfolds, combining fresh and herbaceous aspects with resinous notes, revealing dark wood and hints of incense.
It feels cool and a bit stern - and to my surprise, I find myself mentally not in the desert, neither by day nor by night, but standing in front of a Finnish sauna, where a fresh infusion is steaming on the hot stones.
For several minutes, I am enveloped by the vapors that stifle any hint of a cold in its infancy, before dry spices emerge from the mist, giving "Little Stars" a seemingly paradoxical cool-warm character.
Here, the fragrance begins to change on my skin - sometimes the eucalyptus-coolness seems to take a solo, only to soon hide behind slightly smoky wood, and a breath later, the spices blend with subtly used flowers in the background to form a striking yet unpretentious oriental.
This continues for quite a while, and only after many hours do the little stars slowly become darker and softer, gaining warmth and a delicacy that seems almost fragile.
At no point, however, do they lose their woody-dry base character; a subtly cool undertone always prevents the dissolution of any distance.
Despite all the friendliness and approachability, even the last hint of the base retains a restrained coolness, as I have - and here I agree with Turandot again - not experienced in any other fragrance.
To put it in the words of Mister Spock, perhaps the most famous star traveler: "Fascinating!"

PS: Florblanca - thank you!

Little Stars? More like a Supernova
Little Stars? Not at all - rarely has a perfume had a more inappropriate name. This scent is for me the cleanest and most robust oriental I have ever encountered. Once again, the fragrance notes create a fluidity that I have never experienced before, and I can say: I have truly never smelled anything like this, which makes the description quite challenging for me.
The scent first greets me with a cold, distant, herbaceous mint note, even though nothing of the sort can be found in the pyramid. It is so powerful that the opening absurdly contradicts the name of the perfume. These are not little stars; this is a supernova or a comet with an impressive tail. This minty or conifer-like note runs throughout the entire progression and can still be felt in the cool, soft dry down. The floral notes, on the other hand, are very subtly integrated, primarily helping to soften the spiciness of the spices without playing a major role themselves. At no point does the almost gourmand spice bazaar note emerge that is characteristic of some orientals. Here, it is more about sharpness and aroma than 1001 Nights. In any case, jasmine and ylang-ylang make Little Stars wearable for women through their presence, giving the scent smoothness and elegance. The agarwood does not show its often strange medicinal-scratchy side this time, but rather subordinates itself to the cedar. Surprisingly, this interplay even comes across as woody-leathery to me, and I suspect that the cedar is the trigger for this.
Little Stars is not a crowd-pleasing scent. Those who love pronounced floral notes and a certain sweetness will not warm up to it, and I even find it somewhat unwieldy and initially inaccessible. But the longer I test it, the more familiar its initially alien aspects become to me.
When I describe the scent as an oriental, my mind's eye does not conjure up a noisy, colorful bazaar, but rather a cold, clear desert night with brightly shining stars. The spices of the Orient are clearly present, but they are truly cold, clean, and powerful for me.
I am thrilled by the olfactory experience. Whether I want to wear the perfume and especially on what occasion, I am not clear about. I do not want to claim that this is a beautiful scent. It does not flatter, is not particularly sensual, and certainly not sweet, but I am fascinated by it.

The opening is intensely spicy, especially dominated by cloves. The drydown is magnificent: a robustly spiced floral brew with a hint of wood. Gujarat's brother.

Beautiful oud and dark spice. Plays wonderfully with the animalic notes. This scent is strangely underrated.

Baked oud in a salt crust. Ylang-Ylang must have just served as fuel. Extremely spicy with a citrus balance. oddlyGOOD
