Smoky floral
Mandorava and I got off on the wrong foot, but that was simply because I misread its character. In the end it turned out to be a big dramatic floral, so inevitably we became good friends.

The top notes took me by surprise. A big stick of incense. No church or buddhist temple, but straight up hippie festival type of incense. They recede within the hour, just to remain faintly in the back. Then it is time for the best part, in my opinion. Big florals! At first the more exotic florals like champaca. Later on also some familiar white florals can be detected. Together with a big sweep of (non-animalic) civet these build up a huge floral-aldehyde structure with smoke and dry woods in the base.

This fits well in Prin's range of vintage-style florals. It is somewhat similar to the Prin-branded Mandodari. Both are well worth a test run if you are up for florals with a kick.

Joss Sticks
I don't know what I was expecting from Mandarava but it wasn't this.

Three or four hours in (fifth day of testing) and it is smelling quite heady. I'm debating, at the moment, of washing off or trying to tough it out to see if the perfume settles on me.

Initially I got a hit of vanillic amber, which was joined within a few minutes by strong bonfire smokey notes (which remind me of birch tar but I am sure there are many other materials that can give the bonfire note, and in this case not like smokey bacon crisps but smokey bonfire). I quite like smokey bonfire

At the moment, and for the last several hours, all I can smell is a sickly sweet, raw, unburnt joss stick smell. This smell on me is very dense, thick, heady, and is swamping all else.

Compared with other perfumes I have been testing of late this is very concentrated and one tiny spray from a 2 ml sample spray is powerful to my nose. When I sprayed myself with three (because I had had to with the others) I felt quite giddy for a couple of hours and had to wash off. The scent remaining was rather nice.

Obnoxious nag champa-floral aircare
I think Mandarava (Prissana) is utterly horrific but many people whose opinion I respect think it's a masterpiece. While clearly well made, its dense cloud of indeterminable flowers, incense, and musk is unbearable to me, because note for note, it smells like someone emptied an entire aerosol of nag champa-scented room deodorizer into a small room and closed all the windows. It has the same overwhelming stuffiness and cheap, greasy-powdery musk overload as Koh-I-Noor by Areej Le Doré but lacks that scent's more fine-tuned sense of balance that somehow keeps everything in check; Mandarava is unhinged in a way that sets my teeth on edge. But, you know, people other than me love it.

I don't normally review so negatively, so you have to know there's a redeeming angle here. And here it is - the drydown is weirdly good. I've worn this three times in the name of science, and each time the drydown takes me by surprise in a good way. Unfortunately, I never quite managed to make it to my notepad in time to write down what it is that I think almost redeems Mandarava, so you'll have to believe me that the texture of the scent changes about six hours in, emerging from the cardboardy fug of nag champa to become sharper, woodier - more interesting somehow. If I ever subject myself to Mandarava again - which, to be honest, is unlikely - I'll come back and update this review.

Spirituality
Mandarava is a fragrance that masterfully combines floral, woody, and resinous elements, evoking a sense of sacredness and meditation. It opens with bright aldehydes and an opulent floral bouquet of champaca, jasmine sambac, and tuberose, enriched by green nuances of Indian marigold.
The heart deepens with sacred resins like frankincense and myrrh, blended with Mysore sandalwood and Assam oud. Spices such as cumin and cinnamon add warmth, while patchouli introduces earthy depth.
The base intertwines vetiver, ebony wood, benzoin, and oakmoss, finishing with a balsamic sweetness and subtle sensuality. A scent journey that celebrates spirituality and the profound beauty of nature.

'80s Aldehydic Floral, But Make It Prissana...
The top notes of Mandrava are radiant, bright, and aldehydic, a wave of rose, jasmine and tuberose married to orange and cherry, slightly candied and medicinal i(n a cough syrup fashion(, a hint of frankincense and nag champa adding a twist.

Over time, the shimmering top becomes warmer, denser, almost sticky and chewy, like a floral-flavored losenge made of resins. The amber accord leans heavily towards its myrrh and benzoin notes, with hints of savory spices (cumin; coriander) and a pinch of chypre qualities (I get a touch of moss and patchouli).

Still though, it’s mostly about those plangent florals and aldehydes, on display deep into the heart of this fragrance. This perfume is loud and shoulder-padded in a classic 1980s way. If you’re familiar with Alain Delon Iquitos, you know about 80% of this fragrance already, minus some Prissana house-style touches.

Initially fresh and soapy spicy-green, a gently animalic, oriental spicy-floral Chypre, on a warm and resinous earthy-woody base. Classic.

Another vintage style from Prin.
Aldehydes and a tiny bit of civet in the opening, followed by flowers (champaca primarily) and amber accord

Take mandodari but add more flowers, animalic nuances and creamy floor. It’s a juicy flower composition with a meditative incense side.

Vintage floral perfume smells like a very angelic beautiful woman dressed in white wearing a yellow flower crown!

Playful exotic flowers, civet, and aldehydes, followed by cumin and cinnamon on a sandalwood incense base. Nuanced and incredibly enjoyable.

This is not 4 me, at all. It smells like my mother-in-law's house. A mixture of flowers with incense, shampoo, dust and cat. Solid Nope.
