Penhaligon's - An Obituary for Headless, Vegetarian Fragrances, Eleventh Strike
Chypchen

Posy translates to something like little bouquet. And for this fragrance, there could be no better name, as Victorian Posy embodies the olfactory diminutive. I think of a little house with flowers in the garden and a little tree beside it, a house with a garden on a little cliff by a little sea under a radiant little sun.
At Penhaligon’s Victorian Posy, clear parallels emerge with the two-year-older Ormolu from the same house. Both are unmistakable representatives of the Chypre genre, and even Ormolu is not one of the usual bombastic fragrances. Victorian Posy is even sweeter and milder. While the combination of jasmine and rose with chamomile on the typical moss base is common to both, Victorian Posy expresses the theme in a more subtle, elegant, and lively manner. The wonderful obligatory hesperidic-citrus opening certainly plays a role, but so does the overall more discreet, elegant presence and the underlying green tone. Ormolu represents its roots as a Chypre from the late seventies more vehemently, making no secret of it. Victorian Posy, on the other hand, is also quite bitter, almost austere, but remains overall more reserved and does not seem quite so obviously out of time today.

Ladies and Gents, I present to you Victorian Posy aka Chypchen, little sister of Ormolu.
Unfortunately, like its older sister, it is already in early retirement.

English Chypre
That plants thrive in South England just like in Cyprus, due to the very mild climate, is probably known to some.
And that Chypre fragrances par excellence are composed (were composed) in England is known only to a few. I too have been enlightened to this fact.
Penhaligon's has masterfully demonstrated this with their "Victorian Posy".
However, it was anything but masterful to remove this wonderful fragrance from the lineup, or rather from production.
Thanks to a dear perfumista, I now have the privilege of owning a mini and delighting in its bouquet.
At first, galbanum together with hyacinth manages to produce an astonishingly green-intense violet-like scent, which is only accompanied by a slightly fresh citrus.
As it wears, a triad emerges between roses, the gentle bloom of jasmine, and the aforementioned violet intro, which is not just an entry into the fragrance,
Carried by its leisurely-pleasant herbal sweetness, sandalwood makes its way to my nose and thus immediately to the "reptilian brain". "Ancient 70s hippie sandalwood," along with the same kind of patchouli.
Beneath lies a "darker" layer of scent that reaches into great depths. "Inky" slightly bittersweet oakmoss in duet with herbaceous-earthy vetiver.
And on top, the "full blast" from the green-floral perfume layers above.
A densely woven "carpet" of aromas.
Everything smells so wonderfully "old-fashioned" that it already seems "modern" to me.
Some niche brands are literally struggling to create a fragrance that appears "old-fashioned".
Some succeed as well.
But now a big, pleading request to the house of Penhaligon's: Please dig up the old original formula of "Victorian Posy" again, start production, and don’t stop it again.
Friends and fans of an "Old English Chypre" will thank you....

Victorian Floral Chypre
When I first shared my thoughts on this fragrance, I only had a previously opened auction bottle in my possession, and I wasn't quite sure if the scent was still completely intact. The perfume struck me as somewhat quirky...
Since I am a fan of Penhaligon perfumes, especially the older, often very decorative bottles, I also jumped at an offer for a like-new bottle (along with the pretty box), which is what my comment refers to now.

Right from the first spray, "Victorian Posy" makes it clear that it belongs to the Chypre family. The oakmoss is unmistakable and adds a slightly bitter note. Those who know my comments are aware that I am not a big fan of Chypres. In my childhood in the 70s, this fragrance direction was apparently much more widespread than today; many of the perfumes from that time I found to be piercing or headache-inducing. Today, I am more open to Chypres, some I quite like, but they rarely receive high ratings from me.
The floral classification certainly applies as well, but anyone expecting a lush or sweet floral bouquet - the perfume's name suggests something like that - might be disappointed. The flowers tend to stay more in the background. I can hardly perceive any sweetness. For my taste, it's a rather austere perfume. I have revised my initial classification of "creamy" (referring to the opened bottle I purchased) and instead clicked on "woody." Either there are different formulations, or the opened fragrance has indeed changed somewhat. VP feels a bit "out of time" to me. However, anyone who enjoys the Chypres of the 70s should definitely give it a try!

About the bottle: I apparently have two examples of an older version with a fir green ribbon and a larger label, on which the bouquet takes up more space. In my opinion, it's prettier than the more minimalist version shown here. Photo to follow!

Wonderful. Hyacinth/galbanum, bitterer chamomile, moss, & a traditional rose/violet. Created for a museum and owns its anachronistic glory.

Dry, nostalgic, well-mannered. So very English.
Chypre heaven over St. Ives.
To the Lighthouse.
A perfume of one's own.
(I want it!)

A spring bouquet in pastel colors. Like primroses and pansies fresh from the garden! A bright greeting with a hint of nostalgia. Beautiful!!

Finally, oak moss for a softie like me. Sweet chamomile, hyacinths, and jasmine gently blend, fine fruitiness softens earthy-woody notes.

A bit strange... floral, slightly creamy, quite quirky, apparently a Chypre. Feels a bit old-fashioned. Bottle prettier than in the picture!

Classic, feminine, and floral Chypre scent. The name fits perfectly. For classic ladies.
