Basque Gold
I've always liked Paco Rabanne's fragrances. Before I became a perfumista, Métal was a signature scent of mine for years. I have his wonderful La Nuit and Ultraviolet. I bought hubby his really splendid Pour Homme. He bought me Lady Million and, just now, Lady Million Absolutely Gold (a deeper version). Per their website, Paco Rabanne was born in the Spanish Basque country, bordering France. One year I vacationed there on the French side, in the Pyrenees south of Biarritz and fell in love with these fiercely independent people who have preserved their own language and customs. I loved the cheese and the dances and their great hospitality. Paco Rabanne was raised on the French side and you can tell it from the beauty of his perfumes. You can tell he's Basque by his originality. His first clothing collection was called, "12 Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials." I must be a rebel, too, because I've yet to encounter a perfume of his I don't like. This one is a study in orange: neroli, bitter orange, orange blossom. Who does that? Rabanne. [Okay, Armani, Creed, Guerlain, Le Labo, too. Wonder if they got it as right.] And if that's not sultry enough, he's added Jasmine Sambac and made the base throb with Patchouli and Labdanum. The result is an oddly fresh citrusy, indolic, resinous glory that doesn't smell like other scents. I know I'll be wearing this one a lot. Eskerrik asko (thank you), Mr. Rabanne.
