About 10 Years Late...
Rabanne and its Invictus and 1 Million lines were all the rage back in the early 2010s. Something about their typical sweet bubblegum DNA made waves in the industry. Things have changed since then, however, and the market has matured, as well as (most) of its afficionados. Hence, I struggle to see how Invictus Parfum fits in today's market, being released in 2024. For if this was released 10 years ago, it would have found its way onto most people's shelves (probably).
The opening immediately hits you with a small dosage of nostalgia which for me, personally, is not really the good kind of nostalgia. You get the classic synthetic burst paired with the Hubba Bubba bubblegum sweetness, which evokes that feeling of "mistakes of your youth". This sweetness stays persistent, but it does mellow down a bit rather quickly to make way for some marine, slightly salty freshness and a more distinct citrusy-fresh-spicy pink pepper. There are some hints of a fresh lavender too, but I don't get much.
Moving to the heart notes, we meet this weird black soap note, which adds a clean, soapy nuance, but also touches of plants and/or essential oils. I'm not a huge fan of it. I'm partly saved by a small touch of camphoraceous and sweet myrtle, and a refreshing, watery violet leaf which is rather mild.
The base is... about as boring as they come. Soft muskiness and faint warm, creamy sandalwood, with remaining marine-bubblegum sweetness in the back. That's about it. There's no depth, nor anything that truly makes this remarkable. The blending and raw quality materials are unremarkable too.
In terms of performance, Invictus Parfum sticked around for about 5-6 hours, which is already more than I'd want a scent of this type to last on me. For projection, it could've been worse; pretty strong 2+ feet for the first half an hour, after which it would quickly drop to about a foot for 1-2 more hours, and it would become a skin scent soon after that.
As you'd expect, this is not a fragrance that's hard to wear... if you're under 15. Anything above and you might come off as a bit "too" youthful. If you still, for whatever possible reason in this universe, choose to wear Invictus Parfum regardless of your age, I suppose for sports, as a daily, and as a leisure wear would be the best fits for it.
But then why would you wear Invictus Parfum in the first place? Especially nowadays, when you've got countless better options out there. At least if this took a more mature approach/change of scene than the OG, then maybe it could've been more justifiable. But really, apart from a couple of tweaks, Invictus Eau de Toilette and Invictus Parfum still share the same synthetic bubblegum sweetness at their core, which is why the Invictus line gained its fame in the first place, and also why it deserved its downfall. If Invictus Parfum was released about 10 years ago, closer to the release of the OG, then I'm sure it would've brought in plenty of profit. But in today's market? It's basically just a waste of space on the shelves. So if you thought (and hoped) that the new Parfum flanker of the Invictus series was going to revitalize the lineup with a more mature approach, you'll be disappointed when you actually get to smell it.
Overall Rating: 4.4/10
