Another Rochas miracle
A few times I have been so lucky to meet a fragrance that really gets to me - in a good way. I remember meeting Rive Gauche a long time ago, giving me the feeling that this was designed just for me. I still get that feeling whenever I spray it on. It can make darkness go away, a hard task seem easy and clothes fit better. Rive Gauche is a miracle in a bottle… I almost felt the same when I sprayed Byzantine…
I am a great fan of House Rochas, almost as much as I am of House Guerlain. They never seem to disappoint me, when it comes to engaging with their different fragrances. So it was with excitement that I finally got to meet Byzantine. Would I love it as much as I love Byzance?
Flowers, flowers and then some more… this scent is absolutely marvellous. It makes me happy. I start smiling when I spray it on. Alberto Morillas is the nose behind so many beautiful and succesful fragrances and this is not an exception.
On my skin it starts out with the mix of freesia, orange blossom and lily of the valley. So beautiful! It has a long life on my skin, thankfully, and I can keep on sniffing for more than 6 hours. The scent comes in delightful waves, and every wave introduces a different flower. At some point it changes slightly, becoming more woody and quieter, but it keeps that magic touch all the way, which on my skin is 7-8 hours. Quite impressive. Sillage is close to my skin and if I did have a bottle of this, I would wear it often and everywhere.
Again I have to ask the question: But why? Why is this discontinued?! In this case it is a crime and there should be a law against it.

The Sunny and Radiant Byzantine
Byzantine is a beautiful floral for spring and summer. You can simply smell flowers upon flowers - mainly white flowers and a bit of orange blossom or Tiare, still not sweet, just pleasantly fragrant and natural, as they really are. Perhaps the mimosa is more dominant than the heliotrope here.

It is moderately powdery, but at the same time fresh. There are soapy nuances mixed with floral, sunny notes and an oriental base of creamy sandalwood and soft vanilla. I really like it.

The bottle and the juice color reflect its scent very well. I would say Byzantine is a sunny, radiant fragrance ... in the same vein as "Champs Elysees" by Guerlain (less of the almond note and with a much lower lily note). I am very happy to finally own it, as it was very hard to find. I really regret that it is no longer produced by Rochas.

You Just Have to Love It!
And yet, when you hit the market, you marched right past me. How could you???

Such a delightful little beauty, full of youthful grace and playfulness.

There is actually no real progression, yet Byzantine clearly shows its connection to Byzantium after a few hours. The "base," if we can call it that here, has the same fine-powdery, warm hue as its big sister Byzantium.

But until that happens, I walk through a whole, vast sea of flowers. The bright blooms like lily of the valley, mimosa, and orange blossom stand out more than the other flowers. The scent is fine and creamy soft, in no way intrusive and very youthful feminine. Beautiful!

One would have to be 20 again??? No, not at all. Even though the temptation from Byzantine is quite strong.

So, so lovely!
Well, I would not call Byzantine the little sister of the magnificent Byzance, at most a distantly related grand cousin.
I truly cannot understand why Rochas has removed the wonderful fragrances like Byzance and Byzantine from their lineup. With a club, I would strike down and stomp my foot. If I could, I would unleash my snakes to bite Marcel Rochas in the leg or stare him down until he turns to stone. But it’s all for naught, as he has been dead for a long time and surely does not bear this attitude on his conscience.
Quote: "Marcel Rochas shaped fashion history between 1945 and 1955. His name will forever be associated with perfumes such as: Femme, Madame Rochas, Mystére, Lumiére, Macassar, or Eau de Rochas."
However, I am fortunate to own a vintage bottle of Byzance, so I can directly compare cousin and cousin. Elective affinities? It seems so, and yet not.
While Byzance embodies the great field marshal (or the great lady standing behind the great man - behind every great man, there is usually an even greater woman - it has always been this way, we don’t need Alize Schwarzer for that), Byzantine plays the role of the angelic figure with the golden harp.
Oriental light? Only at the beginning, and the lovely little one turns up the volume more and more with each passing hour, evolving into a wonderful overall composition of blossoms, delicate citrus fruits, and noble woods.
A very fine and noble oriental, and it is a shame that it has been taken off the market.

Warm floral bouquet with a slight hint of lily of the valley for me. Quite nice, but not a standout for me.

You really have to like clove (I love it)... it dominates the floral and woody notes on me. Softly oriental, beautiful!

A floral, spicy feel-good scent with good longevity even though it's just an EdT. It's a shame it's no longer being produced.
