Three Cheers for Open.
I have big love for Roger and Gallet Open; it has all the elements that make me swoon. The somewhat aldehydic opening redolent with aromatics, including notable sage and thyme, that merge with a tobacco note that is completely devoid of gratuitous sweetness, reminiscent of Burley leaves. There is a texture to it that is nearly agrestic, sort of a countryside flair that I also pick up from the likes of other winners such as Aramis Devin and Hermes Rocabar.

It's sensible yet complex; it certainly isn't modern, but who's counting anyway? This is a fragrance for the ages, my friends.

Its elegance and form belies its shockingly low price tag: price to quality ratio is astonishing. When discovering stunning fragrances such as these, it really puts it all into perspective. It brings light to the pretensions, the pomp and circumstance of frag culture. We put value on the commodity, the illusion of opulence and aspiration that is tied to a hefty price tag, and we often lose sight of our own judgments and discretion. It's much like wine culture and other fineries, the bait and switch for those who don't discern without clear reference points will mistake a bottle of Two Buck Chuck for Château d'Yquem. Are we really reading with our own senses, or are we relying on others to qualify and quantify? Discernment means breaking down those illusions and really drinking in with the senses and making a personal assessment. It's why there are fragrance enthusiasts who refuse to confine to tight, neat tribes of 'niche,' 'designer,' and the like; they refuse to use price and prestige as a gauge; they know the spice of life no matter what the provenance of price tag. This is wisdom, and Open, aptly-named, is testament to that.

Long time ago
Long time ago, long time - long time ago
Long time ago, long time - long time ago

Long time ago the times when at the end of every tunnel there was always a bright light to be seen, while today, often already brushed by fate, one looks more and more at already mowed meadows. Even the furrows that one still draws oneself are no longer as deep and fertile as they used to be. It is now less about winning new harvests and more about defending the status quo! And more and more often, I am left with a queasy feeling in my stomach, as if I had just torn off the pull tab while unsuccessfully trying to open a can!

Long time ago is the first release of the well-known hit by the group BAB from 1981. Its lyrics are very touching and are almost predestined to deal with the past. While Niedecken was dealing with the death of his father, I reflect here on past times and a bit of a retrospective on that. The song and the perfume to be discussed, Open by Roger & Gallet, are children of the 80s, transformative years in the West and the East, and an important and formative part of my life memories too!

Long time ago the year 1980 when the Greens were founded, 1989 was the end of the GDR. In between were the Falklands War, AIDS, Chernobyl, Challenger explosion, Perestroika, Ramstein air disaster, home computers and CDs, Lindenstraße, Dallas, Neue Deutsche Welle, Hip-Hop, aerobics, mullet hairstyles, carrot pants, leggings, and Schimanski.

Long time ago my beautiful, carefree childhood and the eventful school years when with the beginning of the 80s and the start of military service, the beginning of the "seriousness of life" also knocked on my door. It was the time when many first stakes of one’s own life were driven in, studies, marriage, the birth of children, starting a career, moving, breaks and upheavals.

Long time ago the year 1985 when Open by Roger & Gallet set a very distinctive perfume stake of the 80s. This scent fits like no other into this time and is clearly an adult perfume, rough, bitter, masculine, and dry. At the beginning, you are presented with the full force, lemony soapiness and herb-dominated spiciness with hearty lavender sprinkles. As mentioned, everything is completely dry and without noticeable sweetness. Soon, a strong yet pleasant barbershop atmosphere sets in, which is quickly captured by herbal tobacco. This tobacco develops into the predominantly determining scent element, first rather herbal-green, later increasingly darker, more robust, and earthy-powerful.

Long time ago the year when I lost my heart to a perfume hit of the 80s and it was not Open. But Open by Roger & Gallet has become a good friend to me since I got to know it, long after the reunification. After the rather stormy opening, a more protective impression now spreads. The scent becomes warmer, woody notes break through, the smell becomes softer, gentler, and very pleasant. All steadily accompanied by now dark-spicy and quite bitter tobacco notes, which have not lost all the freshness of the beginning and also remind a bit of mossy, damp earth. This overall conveys a distinctly masculine, old-school feeling, somewhat old-fashioned but very striking!

Long time ago that the word conservative also had a positive connotation. With Open by Roger & Gallet, it has found a fitting scent counterpart from the very beginning. Open does not incite a revolution or changes, but it is a guarantee to remind us in retrospect that while not everything was better in the past, much was also quite good and it is worth preserving.

Long time ago that I thanked you for your tireless reading! So, thank you very much!

"You have to face the truth, the random success of 'Long time ago' is, of course, that everyone interprets their own story into it." (Wolfgang Niedecken)

As if they had known each other
When I first sprayed Open, I had to think of my childhood in the seventies. My father always took me to the swimming pool on Sunday mornings. I couldn't swim yet and probably couldn't get dressed and undressed either, because I always had to go into the men's changing room with him. We were always the only ones struggling in such a single cabin. But it didn't matter, we always had to go through the group changing room anyway. My father always announced that we had to go through "now."
No, this isn't about the naked shame of the seventies in the countryside.
It's about the scent that lingered in that humid, warm air. Men who smelled freshly showered, most likely of Tabac Original and their personal smoking gear. Because everyone smoked.

That's what I thought of with "Open (Eau de Toilette) | Roger & Gallet." It starts with an aromatic lemon that comes across as "rich" thanks to the lavender. After a while, I think I can also perceive the sage. Thyme doesn't reveal itself to me.
And then it comes, the tobacco, which smells so beautifully freshly washed to me here. Probably that's due to the vetiver. But I think it was also in the swimming pool.

I'm glad I got to know this scent and that it reached me, both by mail and emotionally.
I don't want to make a statement about longevity and sillage, as I haven't researched that.

Oh, I can dress myself now.

One of best tobacco based scents out there. Very in Your face, very 80's, almost aggressive, kicking today's tobaccos in .....out of sight

A gorgeous 80-s tobacco citrus fragrance. The drydown is to die for. It's cheap, but it smells expensive. Best value for your money.

Fabulous old school soapy/tobacco with oakmoss - a real gem.

To have a wonderful tobacco scent, you have to withstand herbal soaps that cause headaches. It's outdated in a bad sense.

March, 1984: in like a lion of citrus and lavender; out like a lamb of tobacco and wood. Would trade some of the top for more of the base.

A classic men's scent. If you weren't raised with it, you might not enjoy it. Soap, tobacco, a worn blazer...

Here it is, just as it has always been. Herbal, soapy, slightly smoky yet clear. Definitive and solid. A powerhouse without being harsh.
