“Chypre” Sandalwood
In my opinion it’s one of the best vintage interpretations of Sandalwood in perfumery. This fragrance is made as a Chypre and definitely has a certain “classic” vibe. In addition to the gorgeous dominant sandalwood, I can smell here some green and animalic notes, rose, resins and a lot of oak moss.

What was before time and space?....
... And how did the Big Bang occur? Questions that even the smartest professors will probably never be able to answer. Only what happened afterwards, up to a certain point.
And what is between times and spaces? Probably yesterday, today, and tomorrow. And scents.
From yesterday, left over for today and tomorrow. Very special scents that do with the senses what THEY want. And this includes Roger&Gallet, Santal.
It puts you in a trance where all times and spaces are ONE. It shows the sunny sides with orange blossoms and lavender, it makes us bite into lemons, it brings the "spice of life," which sneaks in with tarragon and cumin.
It presents itself in a spherical-melodic way with the aromas of sandalwood and touches the earth with patchouli. It reminds of deep forests through birch tar and mosses. It is sun-warm through cinnamon and lets us see the starry sky.
It does not take life too seriously, but serious enough to remain steadfast against all fashions and trends.
And it gives the soul wings that allow it to float between all times. And perhaps to look behind the "Big Bang"? Maybe everything repeats itself in the cosmos, and in a world "before our time," someone is pondering the same things?
We will probably never know. Yet with Santal comes a quiet hint......

70s Lychee Psychedelica Odor
SANTAL by R&G from 1978 is an extraordinary fragrance. I haven't smelled anything comparable so far (that's why the 50ml bottle stays with me).
In the parfumo fragrance direction, it says "spicy-woody." Sorry, but that's absolutely off and far from the truth. It's more fruity-grape-floral with depth, and that as a men's perfume! The scent requires courage from a man, but due to its uniqueness, it will fully satisfy the inclination towards Chypre.
SANTAL is so Chypre. One of those fragrances, just like CATALYST, MAGNÉTIQUE, or GRAN VALOR, that I encounter and can't define at all what it actually is.
SANTAL is primarily honey-sweet, intoxicatingly floral, and has this "fizz" (like soda) similar to KOUROS, and then I fall into an almost psychedelic daze.
But the central all-pervading scent is LYCHEE! Yes, exactly, those little grape-sized slippery Japanese fruits with the dragon skin. So psychedelic, totally 70s, but fruity and not grandma-tacky! Where CATALYST becomes veggie and herbal, SANTAL wafts into the sensually fruity-floral and gets lost in-a-gadda-da-vida, honey…

Roger & Gallet have produced extraordinary creations anyway. R&G, 150 years and purveyor to the court in Great Britain.

Delightful bright spicy chypre with aromatherapeutic properties. Awake calm and clear thoughts. Refreshing yet deeply protective.

The scent has been resurrected as Pétrole from Histoires de Parfums. It's just chypre-ier and brighter.

In short, a strong scent in every way. Green-herbaceous, classically fresh with sweet woods. Well done.

Somehow a tough scent that - because it's too opulent and sweet for 1978 - just barely misses the unisex classification. Still worth a try.
