A Royal Dali
Salvador Dali is one of the very few houses for which I've concluded: if the notes appeal, blind buy. I like Le Roy Soleil (The Sun King) the most from the sample set just in, which also has: Eau de Dali, Dalimix Gold, Dalissime and ItIsLove. I found them all not only wearable, but beautiful. At first I assumed it was because they share the same notes, but they don't. Usually I'm attracted to the solidly alluring base combo of amber, musk, sandalwood and vanilla. That probably has a name, or ought to, something like Basenotes of the Gods. Le Roy Soleil has it, as well as several of my favorites florals. That doesn't account for why I'm drawn to the Dalis that don't. There's no single note that all of them share. This is also true of his paintings. All don't have the same elements. No mistaking a Salvador Dali, though, because whatever the content his distinctive style is instantly recognizable. If a Dali painting became available, art collectors the world over would clamor to blind buy it. For me, it's the same with Dali perfumes.

Le Roy Soleil is a classic oriental (bergamot, jasmine, amber, musk, vanilla) in which the whole exceeds the parts. Unlike lusciously heavy orientals of the 80's, this one is a refined and delicate blend. Its deft addition of fruits, citrus and spice, its dash of vetiver, raise the scent to catch sunlight and deliver it to the noses of appreciate sun kings, and us. Off to find an FB.

p.s. Found it! Should have mentioned Dali's painting called Le Roy Soleil, was inspired by the actual sun king Louis XIV, Europe's longest reigning monarch. Favorite Louis quote: Has God forgotten all I have done for Him? The painting inspired the scent.

A dream within a dream: A hint of "Salvador Dali" in a bottle
Unbelievable complex, rich, strong and beautiful. The Parfum de Toilette verison (1997) is one of the most beautiful apricot/cinnamon/vanilla fragrance I have ever experienced. Almost a work of an art. I can feel the natural ingredients and that makes me feel SAD and lost in this nowadays IFRA and EU killing restrictions. Stil have two mini bottles in my room, looks so cute, posh and gorgeous. A fruity/oriental gem with deep rosewood accents, which will be missed for sure. The box hides lots of secret messages as the entire dali opera offers... I don t find any similarities with Princess Marina de Bourbon.
Great longevity, lots of compliments when I wear it. Spectacular and unique indeed. Unisex with no doubt, a lovely sunshine fragrance that will make you feel special. The bottle is stunning, even in mini format

Easy to sell and easy to buy
I have had this in my collection for quite some time and never tried it. Luckily when I do it is simply amazing! Especially the beginning.
Mandarin orange and rosewood - bang! The rest of the notes does not make an impression and I sincerely disagree with the longevity rating. But the beginning- wauw!
My own bottle is unfortunately an item with a box but the top does not fit,,, I guess I was desperate…

The king is dead! Long live the king!
Le Roi Soleil was originally a fragrance by Elsa Schiaparelli, for which her good friend Salvador Dali designed the bottle "Sonnenkönig." It was meant to mark the end of the war in 1946 and symbolize the hope that France now placed on the future.
Elsa and Salvador often collaborated, bringing to market bottles, furniture, jewelry, and of course haute couture that were tinged with surrealism and far ahead of their time. The original packaging of the bottle Le Roi Soleil, crafted from Baccarat crystal, was a large shell made of gilded metal. I was fortunate enough to see and touch an original presentation of this 1946 bottle in Chicago in 1998, but I was about $20,000 short for the purchase. Even in 1946, the bottle was hardly affordable for ordinary mortals. In 1997, the Baccarat bottle was released again in a limited edition, this time filled with the new version of the fragrance, launched by Parfums Salvador Dali. The price in 1997 was 1500 Deutschmarks / 750 Euros, and there were 3000 pieces worldwide. The packaging this time was a small cabinet covered in shocking pink velvet (a nod to Elsa's fondness for this color), in which a small drawer held the pure perfume in a gold-colored container that could be used to refill the Baccarat bottle. The 3 pieces that were available in Düsseldorf in 1997 were sold out on the day of release.
But this time, even the average person on the street should be able to afford Le Roi Soleil, and so at the same time, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, and perfume in spray bottles were released at moderate prices.
To what extent the scent resembled that of 1946, I cannot judge, as I have never had the pleasure of smelling the "vintage."
But today I opened the 1997 Baccarat bottle, which had been stored cool and dark since then, to get an impression of this "vintage."
The fragrance absolutely lives up to the dream bottle.
The top note is extraordinarily juicy-fruity. The apple is present, but it does not stand out particularly; rather, it contributes a light fruity sweetness to the accompanying citrus fruits. This feels completely natural, in contrast to many contemporary citrus top notes.
The heart note logically moves into floral territory. Here too, a fulminant accord of flowers creates a bouquet of shimmering beauty. No single flower stands out, evoking the association "Flower Show on the Island of Mainau," not sweet, not piercing, not intrusive, just beautifully floral.
The base is surprising. I would have expected something chypre, but that is not the case. The base is creamy and velvety. Only now does a warm sweetness join in.
The fragrance descends as it appears: A celebration of light, life, and the sun!

Who longs for the sun?
So, on New Year's Eve I was in Munich, or rather in one of its smaller suburbs called Forstinning. I had never heard of it before… it’s a tiny place where probably only four people live or so… and one of them is my brother, who has settled there with his girlfriend and is now complaining about the low internet speeds :D

Anyway, it had snowed there, and I must admit, due to the expansive rural landscape, it looked pretty cool, and one would have wished for just this snow in larger cities at Christmas… *sigh*

On the other hand, it was also very muddy and above all one thing: COLD AS HELL!!! :D
So cold that even in thick winter jackets, people were still shivering! So much so that even autumn and winter fans found themselves wishing for the sun again. At least this scent from Dali somehow provided a little taste of spring and summer, even if the sun on this bottle looks somewhat sad…

The scent:
The scent begins with very noticeable fruits like apple, mandarin, and pineapple, shortly after which you can also smell the lemon quite well, but it disappears quickly. Very soon, both woody and (especially) floral notes come into play. However, these do not smell very stuffy, but rather pleasant and sweet. I initially perceive the clove, as it has a distinctive scent (one of the few plants I can quickly recognize by smell, yes yes… great achievement on my part, no need to applaud all at once! :D). Other than that… well, it remains simply floral for now :D
A little later, I can identify the roses among the floral notes (another one that is relatively easy to identify :D), and I also smell cinnamon, which I find fits very well with the rest. Overall, the scent becomes sweeter and sweeter; I believe I also detect violet later on. The sweetness blends with the fruity notes, creating a light fruity-sweet note that I find very pleasant and beautifully spring-like (by the way, among the fruity notes, I later smell the apple the most).
Towards the end, the sweet scent increasingly comes from amber, then from musk. Tonka bean is hinted at, vanilla is hardly detectable, and vetiver seems to be completely absent.

The sillage and longevity:
The projection is quite good; you don’t have to get very close to smell the fragrance on the wearer. This strength doesn’t last too long, but fortunately, the scent doesn’t fade too quickly and remains pleasantly detectable for a long time.
I also found the longevity quite good, as the scent lasted over eight hours.

The bottle:
The bottle has a conical shape and is filled with yellowish fragrance liquid. The cap represents a sun, which also has a face and looks rather sad instead of smiling. Perhaps this is because the shapes that are supposed to represent the face consist of birds, and due to the arched wings and the arrangement of the birds, the face appears so sad… Anyway, the bottle is very nice to look at and is definitely a great eye-catcher on the shelf.

Le Roy Soleil smells quite nice. It has a floral-sweet scent and is generally a bit “bright,” so despite the many sweet notes, it is not overwhelming and thus very wearable in spring and summer. Since it also has a good sillage, it is suitable not only as a daytime fragrance but also for going out.

In terms of character, some might find the scent a bit too youthful (at least at the beginning), but I think it’s worth a look (or a sniff?), as I believe it can be worn by anyone, meaning all ladies, of course :D
Especially if you’re looking for a feel-good scent with fruity, floral, and sweet notes, you’ve come to the right place.

Even if it’s not particularly spectacularly amazing for me and it smells like many other (good) fragrances, it still belongs to the well-crafted scents. And besides that, it also comes in a really nice-looking bottle!
So, feel free to give it a try; it might be worth it :)

I perceive pineapple-apple-cinnamon, warmed by amber-vanilla flame. Very special, almost unique, a potpourri of aromas harmoniously combined.
