Great Brand’s Great Miss
Back in 1989 I went to see a retrospective exhibition of Salvador Dali’s many works. I remember being a huge fan, dying to see Swans reflecting Elephants in real life. I also wanted to be able to study Mae West’s Face which May be Used as a Surrealist Apartment, a painting I still enjoy very much, due to its humour and colours. I was not disappointed. His many works are interesting, even today, and the fact that he was quite a character himself makes it even better. His aparte mustache, his overly eccentric way of dressing and the whole fuss and ado around his person makes it worthwhile to read about him and dig into his story.
I have had his first perfume since 1986 - it was released in 1983. It is a gorgeous spicy chypre, and it is wonderfully comforting when I wear it. Soft, smooth, marvelous. Laguna from 1991 is also a beautiful gem by this brand. It has a uniqueness that makes it interesting every time I wear it. In 1987 they released Dali pour Homme, an amazing spicy/woody fragrance, that, in my opinion, belongs in the Men’s Top 100 but has not yet made its way there. I therefore simply do not understand how the brand Salvador Dali would make the move from great to mediocre with Dalissime.
First of all, it is synthetic. Through the journey there is this awkward smell of laboratory or factory, which spoils the experience. The combination of the fruity notes is too overwhelmingly sweet and when it moves to the florals, the narcissus is a bit synthetic too. The bottle, however, is beautiful. As are most of the bottles from this brand.
This is not a fragrance for me.
