Gorgeous, flowery iris.
Bravo, Santa Maria Novella for this beautiful iris perfume that emphasizes the iris flower rather than the root. The iris is not alone in this composition: it shares the stage with neroli, jasmine, geranium and champaca, but the iris flower is the show stealer. It smells just like the irises that bloom on the islands of the Japan Inland Sea: only a touch of sweetness, a sprinkle of green, and a papery, woody accord that is really feminine without being too girly. I adore it and want to add it to my iris garden scent collection.

Floral veil held together by the iris
Despite the name, neroli and jasmine end up being the prima donnas- but with iris driving it forward, L'iris becomes a gently cascading floral scent. I'd mentioned a comparison to being a gentler En Passant, and I still think that's the case, in addition to it being a bit like a muskless Fleur de Peau (especially since not taking to musks too well was the starting point for my search for an iris scent/an alternative to FdP): it's cool to the nose, elegant and very soothing. Suitable for year-round wear, when you feel like being cozy. A little off-topic with its composition, but I really do like it. Sillage is low-moderate, whereas longevity can comfortably reach 5 hours.

Iris flowers
Iris scents usually highlight the root, ranging from powdery, starchy, cold, or even buttery.

L’iris is not about the root. Most iris flowers are odorless, but a few varieties are selected for their fragrance. L’iris reminds me of a springtime garden with irises in full bloom, where I have stopped to admire the scent.

If you try this expecting the familiar iris root scent, you’ll be disappointed. But if you’re curious about what iris flowers smell like, this is decent.

frolicsome nymphs
There is a lovely painting by Gaston Bussiere of a pair of frolicsome nymphs bathing in a pool of purple iris. If you could bottle that scene and its cool, playful atmosphere of ephemeral spring florals, the greenest violet leaf, and some sort of woody-musky-powdery mystical fairy soap flakes, you'd have L'Iris.

New Perfumer for Traditional Label from Florence?
The scents from Santa Maria Novella have always been something special in my collection. I have experienced them as exceptional, often with a strong recognizability and always with character. Therefore, my eagerness to grab the new fragrance as soon as it was announced can be explained by my curiosity for a new highlight, as I usually hold back on blind purchases. The pretty vintage bottle also played its part. And nowadays, you can order the fragrances online, which wasn't the case for many years. The presentation is truly high-quality. With the delivery, you receive an original sample of the fragrance, so it can be tested before the packaging is opened. I was surprised that this time a perfumer is mentioned, and an illustrious name from this profession at that. Gian Luca Perris is known to me only in connection with Perris Monte Carlo, but I expected nothing less than greatness from him.

That iris, the root of the bearded lily, only appears in the base, while galbanum provides the opening, sounded interesting to me, and I expected the floral heart note to be rather powerful, as I am used to from the perfumes of Santa Maria Novella. Thus, I got to know my new acquisition.

Well, what can I say. L'Iris is a subtle, fresh-floral, and rather cool iris scent. The iris here does not show its sweeter and powdery side, but rather reminds me more of Hiris by Hermès with a hint of carrot aroma. However, one searches in vain for an exceptional character like that found in Melograno, Calicanthus, or Cala Rossa. That would be disappointment enough for me. But the fact that the scent is hardly perceptible on my skin after just an hour is something I cannot reconcile with my previous experiences with Santa Maria Novella. I have not dealt enough with Perris Monte Carlo to draw comparisons. I do not know which perfumers have worked for Santa Maria Novella in the past. However, in my opinion, the commission to Gian Luca Perris has not been a lucky choice for the brand. I hope the next fragrances from this house will have more expression and character again.

Rarity: a dewy, natural iris FLOWER, garden-fresh, on a background of violets, bitter-green leaves & dusting of orris powder. Really pretty.

A true iris-forward fragrance. Clean yet also cold, earthy and floral.

Not unlike fresh-scrubbed skin with a bar of white soap. But like the $$ version. Iris weaves in and out of other iris-clouded florals.

More neroli than iris, this fresh floral scent may disappoint iris lovers. Unique and clean, but not what the name promises.
