Satisfying green, herbal cologne
This feels like rolling around in an herb garden, crushing the thyme and rosemary in your palms and inhaling deeply the rich, earthy, camphoric green aroma. It's so deeply satisfying and welcome on a hot summer evening. The opening is just gorgeous, laurel leaf with citrus, acerbic and fresh, it reminds me of cooking in the south of France, on a late summer evening. It starts off strong, like a typical Italian cologne, grabbing your attention, filling the room with your presence, but settles beautifully into the most comforting aroma of a woody patchouli that stays with you for a good while, not something I've experienced with a lot of other Santa Maria Novella fragrances.

Pure aromatic for the ages
If it weren't for the (good) longevity and the hint of patchouli in the end, this could be mistaken for a mix of essential oils and herbs meant to purify, heal and refresh rather than to perfume.
It's a very old cologne and I have no trouble imagining it ressembles what it was in 1828 : sugar-free camphor, rosemary, thyme, laurel... I don't really get the lavander. This one makes no apology and doesn't try to please anyone. A timeless apothecary potion.
Nevertheless I find it very wearable, being a lover of all things aromatic. I have only tried it in the heat, where it brings a welcome cool cleanliness, curious to try it in winter !
Very pleasant in the morning after a shower, in quintessential cologne fashion.
I'm a woman but I would guess this used to be a gentleman's cologne. If you like your herbs, give it a sniff !

Rub under your nose when you have a cold
Hello, your complaint?
Blocked nose, cough, and slightly elevated temperature? Sounds like a cold. Please don't go to work this week, I prescribe you this potpourri from Santa Maria Novella, it's basically like Tiger Balm, just weaker - like chicken soup, only without the chicken, but please don't drink it! The herbs will give you strength and slowly get you back on your feet. Here's the recipe, get well soon!

Phew, finally home, let's follow the doctor's advice. Hmm, it says potpourri on the label, strange that it was recommended, what can dried flowers do? Well, let's put it under the nose.. and? Smells like herbs, not flowers. Rosemary, thyme.. and is that bay leaf in the background? It's hard to say for sure, the main thing is that it helps. Indeed - it reminds me of Tiger Balm, just weaker! Good thing, the real stuff would burn my nose hairs off. Pleasant. Later it seems less intense and more towards spices.. I can indeed smell the chicken soup, good thing the doctor warned me not to drink this stuff.

6 hours later, thankfully the medicine wears off, slowly the whole scent becomes lighter, the herbal, green, medicinal scent begins to say goodbye. It seems to have helped me indeed, but my nose needs a break now. The bottle goes into the medicine cabinet for next time, thankfully there's no risk of confusion with the rest of the collection due to the old-fashioned, medicinal-looking bottle. Good that I'm feeling better now, so the medicine cabinet can stay closed, along with this bottle, and I can now use my beloved fragrances again and take a break from this one.

For risks and side effects, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.

A rather heavy spicy-green Mid season fragrance, balanced by a warm earthy-woody base. 100% unisex! Keep sprays to a minimum...

Almost menthol like. Very much an antiquated fragrance profile that we wouldn’t be into today. Not awful though.

Aromatic and spicy fragrance, very old-fashioned. Harshly medicinal to my nose, like a salve, or Vicks Vaporub.

Rosemary-heavy scent, bordering on savoury, reminding me of green spices rather than red spices.

Dry mixed herbs dampened with a heavy spray of citruses, like a very freshly made version of its namesake. Medicinal, warm, comforting.

Spicy Mediterranean herbs with decreasing sharpness and increasing resinousness. I really like it, as the bitter herbs dominate.

Clears the nose, makes the eyes water. Sharp-bitter bay leaf + rosemary, herbaceous, aromatic + stubborn goblin.

The pharmacy roots of SMN are too obvious to me here. It feels like a remedy for various ailments, unfortunately lacking elegance.

Sympathetic misanthrope: Thyme and rosemary clash with fleeting, quickly fading citrus notes and dry wood.
