In Doubt for the Accused
I just bought my first Creed, even though I'm not really a big fan of this brand. And although the fragrance I purchased doesn't actually belong to my preferred scent direction at all. Moreover, it seems to have been discontinued for quite some time, if we are to believe the Creed website and the comments below.

So, guilty on all counts in terms of the charges and yet acquitted? Why is that? Quite simply because "Vetiver" smells exactly as Apicius describes it in his comment. And because the little, spontaneous test sprayer from last night under my shirt sleeve (all other spots were already taken) hasn't let me go, and I could hardly wait to return to the place of temptation today and take my prize with me. The big red sign with the print "20% off all Creed fragrances" that I still had in mind made my mission all the more enticing.

As already hinted, Apicius has perfectly described the scent, so I will unusually refrain from doing so. Just maybe this much: "Vetiver" smells like 4711 but without the grandma behind it. Elegant, timeless, masculine! I really needed such a typical gentleman's scent in my collection. Because with "La Nuit de L'Homme" etc., you might attract a cheeky teenage girl, who, however, becomes even more annoying after an hour than the baiting scent. But with "Vetiver," it's about the real deal...

The softest temptation since there have been vetiver perfumes
Creed has two vetiver fragrances available, a third was unfortunately discontinued. While the Creed selections in perfumeries usually feature the relatively frequently commented Original Vetiver, this little water is a rather rare gem. It comes modestly in a simple transparent Creed bottle and is not as interestingly dark green as the more well-known Original Vetiver. Today I finally found it, allowing for a small test.

It is a completely different style than Original Vetiver, quite the opposite. Original Vetiver is something robust through and through, starting with sharp lemon and a tour de force through a total of 4 different stages of development. Vétiver, on the other hand, stands at the other end of a possible spectrum of vetiver fragrances. It is light, delicate, and summery.

The fragrance notes are more than sparse, although ginger and cedarwood may be present in traces. One gets an idea of this scent when thinking of a classic cologne (Farina counterpart, Eau Imperiale, etc.). This in a very light, almost ethereal variant with rather little neroli and an emphasis on a very light, floating bergamot. In the background, one must imagine a very subtle vetiver note, which is at most darkened with a bit of cedarwood. Definitely not strong spices like in Guerlain's Vetiver.

In the spectrum of Creed fragrances, there is a certain similarity to Royal Water. The cumin note there in a light, citrusy environment somehow corresponds to the only slightly herbal vetiver here. And like this, it is something for a fresh summer morning in the garden. The absence of the strong spices of the competition takes the saturation away from the green color of the vetiver. This vetiver has, in its subtlety, the same gray veil as Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford.

I am very pleased that I encountered this fragrance. Here it shows that vetiver can be not only strong-citrusy-herbal but also exceptionally delicate, pastel-colored, and subtle, while at the same time possessing a mysterious depth. Perhaps I will add this Vétiver to my vetiver collection.

However, I must issue a warning. The scent is not only very subtle but also not very long-lasting. It indeed has more of an Eau de Cologne strength. Whether one should be willing to spend €105 for a fleeting Eau de Cologne is something everyone must decide for themselves. I am uncertain about that.

A noble classic gentleman vetiver of the old school with musk. The favorite scent of J.F. Kennedy. I like it.

Fresh green citrus-grapefruit scent. Neroli adds a fresh floral sweetness. A bit creamy. Not smoky. Very pleasant, but very fleeting.

Stylistically, it doesn't get any safer or more multifaceted. Pure elegance.
