The scent of Hecate
It is not easy to describe the figure of Hecate in traditional mythology, and this also applies to Soir de Lune.
It is natural to wonder what connection there is between a perfume and a mythological and esoteric figure.
The cap of this magnificent fragrance, formulated in 2006 by Master Dominique Ropion, bears the figure of a waning moon, the mythology represented by Hecate.
Hecate is the wise, clever and mysterious young woman, the perfect dualism between light and darkness and between good and evil.

All these qualities are embodied in a fragrance that is relatively young, but contains a maturity and complexity that seem to come from the mythical decade of the 80s.
Dominique Ropion has managed to carry the tradition of other chypre fragrances into the 2000s.
This historical period is obviously characterized by the formulation of predominantly gourmand fragrances. The slow and inexorable decline of originality took place precisely during this period. Therefore, Soir de Lune can be considered a rarity in terms of its historical context.

Soir de Lune is a chypre whose base note is a magnificent rose, made elegant and mature by the wonderful oakmoss, but also a soft and sensual counterpart given by the honey note.
The coriander in combination with the rose emphasizes its deep, mysterious and magical aspects. The first notes are mainly spicy: nutmeg, black pepper and coriander with a hint of lemon.
This initial freshness lasts only a few minutes and the rose reveals itself in all its splendor.
Immediately afterwards, a rose full of mystery and depth emerges, in which dualism, between light and dark, dominates the entire development of the fragrance. The cool, warm glow of sandalwood and honey match the atmosphere intimate, sensual and sometimes sinful.
Other floral notes such as iris, mimosa and jasmine make in more feminine.
Oakmoss and sandalwood, combined with patchouli, exude a mystical and sensual fragrance that lingers for hours. It reveals the profound dualism between light and shadow, chastity and sin, the sacred and the profane.
That's why I like to describe this gorgeous chypre as the scent of a good witch, just like Hecate, the mythological figure who protects witches.

The perfect interweaving of the spicy, fresh notes with the deep, sensual notes that emerge from the first hour make this perfume a true masterpiece of " modern perfumery ".

There are deep links to other great chypre fragrances such as La perla ( 1987), Eau de Soir ( 1990), Knowing ( 1988), Coriandre (1973).

The review refers to a miniature from 2006, which is in my possession.

Heady rose chypre
Soir de Lune is not something you'll find yourself liking immediately, in fact for some the initial blast is a bit much, but once this fragrance settles it's a totally different kettle of fish and one that stays in your thoughts even once the scent has dissipated.

It's a little hard to describe how Soir de Lune smells to me. In some ways it reminds me of Giorgio by Giorgio Beverly Hills, but of course a more refined and elegant version.

I'll start with describing it as a delicious, powdery rose chypre. The rose note is slightly jammy and sweet, drizzled with honey and further complimented by fresh slices of juicy peach. The blend is luxurious, smooth and warm.

The heart introduces some interesting spices and woodsy notes. It's here that Soir de Lune settles into chypre territory, becoming slightly earthy and dense. Sandalwood comes in the form of sandalwood scented incense sticks, a smell I relate to as the scent of those new age stores. Soir de Lune essentially reminds me of the mystical, gypsy types.

The longevity is truly wonderful, clinging to the skin for what feels like forever. Soir de Lune is the kind of rose that I love to wear. In other words, it's a rose fragrance that doesn't smell strictly of garden roses. It's got an aggressiveness to it, and I like that.

I highly recommend Soir de Lune to any rose enthusiast or chypre lover. It's one fragrance that I wish I hadn't overlooked until now.

Iris/Lily Mistake
First blast is that unfortunate blend of Iris and Lily that turns my stomach. Coriander may be upping the putridity. This just doesn't work on my skin.

a rose chypre by any other name
Soir de Lune is a throwback to a genre whose heyday was the 1970s-1980s: the heavy rose chypre. Maybe it’s a tribute, maybe it’s an attempt to revive a faded genre, but it lands squarely in the company of Ungaro’s Diva, Sherrer’s Scherrer, Lauder’s Knowing, even Paloma Picasso’s Paloma. It’s often compared to L’Arte di Gucci, which I’ve never tried.

It is as substantial as the others in the genre, but not as pleasing. It comes off as strong but simple, blanketing but not shadowy like the best of the rose chypres. I can’t actually say the balances are entirely off, but they aren’t inspired. The moss seems forceful but not deep. The citrus topnotes don’t lead into the rest of the perfume. The spices don’t lend richness. The rose is…well, it’s there.

SdL doesn’t reach the heights of the genre that its predecessors did. Perhaps its failings are due to the restrictions on ingredients that made the older rose chypres so robust and full. Fortunately, the chypre genre is forgiving, and while not breathtaking, SdL is not unattractive from any angle.

Moonlight serenade
The first time I saw this expensive and refined fragrance on the shelves of one of my favourite drugstores , I imagined a very light and clean bouquet , something "lunar" , maybe because I was influenced by the name "soir de lune" and by the bottle cap shape, recalling a half moon . so, I was ready to smell a "Clair de lune " by Debussy or by Beethoven made perfume. Classic and pure.
What a surprise when I finally sprayed the scent: it wasn't at all cold and minimalist ,so not a claur de lune by Debussy but a rich and warm "moonlight serenade", just like the great jazz standard by Glenn Miller.
It bouquet was as rich and vibrant as a brass session in a jazz band and the result on my skin intoxicating and warm, with unexpected spicy and zesty notes similar to sax or trumpets solos..
In fact, the spicy accord at the opening is very noticeable giving to the scent a very particular touch and a good sillage. Only after a few minutes you smell the flowery and very feminine -sexy heart, made of Jasmine, rose and lily of the valley. At the base, a warm musky-woody embrace, velvety like a baritone sax and very sexy.
Unfortunately, the price for this "scented jazz composition" is very high , but I think that you must give a chance to this perfume, maybe less famous than "Eau du soir" and "Soir d'orient" but equally intoxicating and refined.
Ready to dance in the moonlight?

Mossy, mossy, mossy. Not much else there for me, unfortunately. Classic chypres don't do well on my skin, so I should have known.

"Moonlight serenade" made perfume: rich, intoxicating but with a zesty touch. Feminine and vibrant with a good sillage. But very expensive!
