A rose done the SHL way…
I’ve had this one sitting for nearly 2 years and rarely have decided to wear this minimally given the 50 ml size. Something about SHL makes me want to both bathe in his frags but because I love them so much, use them very sparingly so I never run out. Immediate thought when spraying - a rose done the SHL way. I’m immediately struck by this having a very Stéphane Humbert Lucas DNA scent profile.

The rose is quite prominent to my nose in the first 15 minutes or so and then the lychee and pomegranate seem to lighten the rose up quite a bit while the DNA of SHL just sits marvelously. Within about 30-45 minutes this makes the rose very sweet smelling yet quite unisex to my nose. As a burly guy, I question why it is I haven’t gone to this more frequently before remembering how special it is to me and thus why I want to use sparingly. Almost makes me wish there had been 100 ml options for frags other than Isra & Miraj and Soleil de Jeddah when this entered my collection in 2020. At about an hour I begin to sense cardamom, pepper, and cumin in the base making this fragrance just special. This and Epic woman, which I also find quite unisex are my 2 absolute fave rose forward frags. I don’t know yet if one should sit higher up on a list of fave roses or if they’re equals to my nose, but one thing is certain, I wish this was a 100 ml so I’d feel better at freely spraying it with greater frequency. Another gem from the SHL collection!

Gorgeous, Mouth Watering, Deja Vu
Rose de Petra is beautiful. It is a high quality rose on top of a light weight, sweetly spiced ambery base. The spices are present but muddled and indistinct (I had hoped for a discernible cumin note but didn't find one, no clear cardamom note manifested on my skin either), the fruitiness is low key and reads as part of the pinkish sweetness of the rose, and base is an melange of soft ambroxan and myrrh. The lack of a fixative basenote listed in the pyramid above seems like a strange oversight as it's clearly present.

The good news is that Rose de Petra is very easy to wear and incredibly lovely. It's that kind of rose note that makes your mouth water even though it doesn't necessarily smell overtly edible. The bad news is that I've smelled an eerily similar fragrance that was made the same year: Aramis Calligraphy Rose (ACR). The differences are very slight with ACR having a slightly more powdery rose and a bit of an herbal note thrown in, but all that means is that ACR ends up being more complex. As Rose de Petra dries down it gets a touch soapier but still maintains the spiced resinous base.

You're going to pull up their pyramids and argue that the note lists are different. I know. But may I remind you that notes are notes suggested by the perfumers and not ingredients. Do a side by side test like I did and tell me I'm wrong and that they are aren't very, very close.

Spicy, woody rose oriental as sheer as a butterfly's wing
Rose de Petra is a nutty, spicy oriental rose that manages to be simultaneously rich and light. The opening reveals a dry, ancient wood note, like a carved box one might find at the back of a bric-a-brac store, slightly musty now with years of neglect but still releasing a warm, woody scent when rubbed. I am astounded to learn that there is no oud note in this blend, because to my nose, this aged, cracked wood scent reminds me of certain aged oud oils I have smelled - both expensive ones and the rather cheap Mukhallat Malaki attar by Swiss Arabian.

Inside the box, a pile of green cardamom pods, freshly cracked open with their hot-green peppery aroma bouncing up to sear the nostrils. The rose comes on shyly, smelling at first of a rose candy wrapped in plastic, but then opens up into a warm roseate mist, filling the air with the sweet, creamy odor of freshly cut roses, fruit, and spices. This rose is not bright, but dusky, and shaded in interesting places.

In texture and weight, it reminds me slightly of Betrand Duchaufour's work for The Different Company on Oud Shamash - it has that same sheer, diffuse feel to it, as if all the heaviest scent particles are suspended in a fine mist that hovers around your skin. It is a pleasure to put on a fragrance that you fear is going to be just another heavy, oriental rose jacked up with spices and then find it wearing like a fine silk shawl. I would put it on a par with Mohur for the effortless ease with which it rises above the tired oriental rose category in which it is placed and for its ability to surprise you with its subtlety and beauty.

"Every Rose has its thorn..."
"Every rose has its thorn
Just like every night has its dawn
Just like every cowboy sings his sad, sad song
Every rose has its thorn" ...*hums*... ... and the Sweetsmell has found its rose scent :)
Who still remembers the song by Poison? A beautiful rock ballad. The song came to my mind spontaneously while testing Rose de Petra... and has been buzzing in my head ever since :)
The fact is ... I don't like a dominant rose in fragrances. This makes it difficult to find a rose scent that I absolutely enjoy, as a rose scent inherently features a dominant rose as its main theme. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a rose scent ;)
Fortunately, Stéphane Humbert Lucas seems to have thought about the topic of rose as well... and has created a rose scent that even women who don't like rose in fragrances can appreciate.
I'll keep humming my rose song... oh yes... exactly... that's how I came up with the song: This rose indeed has a few thorns ... and it's precisely these that make Rose de Petra an extravagant, extraordinary rose scent! :)
About the fragrance:
The opening of Rose de Petra begins fruity-rosy. I detect more pomegranate than lychee, but I don't want to pin myself down too much.
Yes, exactly... regarding the rosy aspect: rosy is good... as it doesn't come across as overly floral. Over time, it becomes even rosier and sweeter ... but it's not your typical rose scent... this rose is darker, somehow gnarly. It is perfectly blended into the fruity mix, but Rose de Petra is not a fruity scent... no, it is a genuine rose scent. For exactly those... like the Sweetsmell who doesn't find rose scents appealing at all.
With cardamom and pepper, and a non-sweaty (!!!) cumin, Rose de Petra moves into the base.
The fruity and spicy notes soften the rose's strictness, taking away its floral aspect... and that's exactly why I like it.
It doesn't come across as elegant... it is gnarly-wild-rosy and spicy!
I would also like to mention that the scent aura is simply grand and emits a tempting and seductive fragrance around me.
And here we are at the longevity. Rose de Petra lasts a good 8 hours, and the sillage is noticeable but not overwhelming.
The most beautiful rose of all roses is always wearable. Not too heavy, not too loud, and for me definitely not tied to any season.
The bottle... the typical shape for Stéphane Humbert Lucas... yes, they are indeed beautiful and elegant.
Conclusion:
Every Rose has its thorn... *Hums* ... and the Sweetsmell has found its rose scent :) ... gnarly-wild-rosy and spicy... so beautiful!
So ladies... if you also have the problem with roses in rose scents... give Rose de Petra a test chance ;)

A Balancing Act Between Delicate Blooms and Hard Sandstone
A well-curated selection from a perfumer typically includes at least one rose fragrance. This is also true for Stéphane Humbert Lucas' new brand Stéphane Humbert Lucas 777, which he launched in 2013 after great successes with Nez à Nez and SoOud. It features a collection of currently seven interesting, luxurious scents, including Rose de Petra.

Petra! The desert city of pink sandstone in the Jordanian desert. The capital of the Nabataean kingdom and thus the first Arab empire in history. As archaeologists and historians have now established, the rock-hewn structures were not only tombs but also storage facilities, temples, treasury houses, theaters, and similar. The initial assumption that they were all tombs was due to the fact that the entrances to the buildings had been buried over time by sand and wind, lying about 2.5 meters underground.

The exploration of the ruins began only in 1920, but the misconception about tombs led to extremely negative reactions in the last century. For example, Jordanian mercenaries shot at the amphorae placed on the gable with machine guns, believing they contained gold.

With Rose de Petra, Stéphane Humbert Lucas pays tribute to this beautiful city, which Thomas Edward Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) referred to as "the most splendid place in the world" in his "Seven Pillars of Wisdom".

A large part of my collection is filled with rose fragrances. I love the scent of these delicate yet prickly flowers that can smell so wonderfully. Another significant part of my collection consists of vintage fragrances - however, rose scents are only represented here to a very small extent. And there is a reason for that. Rose fragrances - vintage or mainstream - are relatively simple compared to modern niche rose fragrances. Vintage rose scents often have a somewhat musty, heavy note, primarily achieved through patchouli. Simple can be good, but it doesn't necessarily make a collector's heart race. Mainstream rose fragrances are usually fruity-rosy fun scents, primarily made for youthful users.

In stark contrast to niche rose fragrances! Especially in contrast to THIS rose fragrance.

Few can match its uniqueness, extravagance, and nobility. The opening, which is very soft, fruity, sweet, and rosy, completely captivates me. Then spices come into play, especially cumin, but without its own sharpness, rather dry and spicy. Cardamom rounds off the spiciness. Throughout, however, the rose remains the main actress, allowing her companions to court her.

In the base, she even turns it up a notch, strong, commanding, and noble, heralding the gentle, soft, dark conclusion.

This rose must be in my collection! A big thank you for this unique testing opportunity goes to Switzerland ;-))

Unique Rose with fruity, not juicy, aroma with spices. Quite light, bright, luminous, energizing, somehow fresh as well. My gym scent.

The scent of rose evokes a captivating aura on skin. It's equally alluring for a gentleman, if he can wear Portrait Of A Lady.

Nice Lychee and Pomegranate opening and as it dries down I got more of the Bulgarian rose and a powdery/dusty type of smell. Still a well crafted frag

If... if cumin wasn't so overpowering here, I'd love to invite Petra over. As it is, it's just a phone date. Distance-ing.
