By Campfire
Imagine a cowboy dressed in denim and leather, sitting by a campfire on a beautiful starry night. Even though I do not know any cowboys, this is the vision I picture in my mind when I smell Lonesome Rider. What you have is a smoky, leathery scent that is reminiscent to a fragrance created by Prin or Papillon. Very nice materials were used to make this.

Lonesome Rider may not be my style of fragrance, but I’m still ecstatic that I have it in my collection.

Jammy rose and leather
Lonesome Rider is an elegant leather and rose scent that takes definite cues from Andy Tauer's earlier smoky-leather creation, № 03 - Lonestar Memories, but is fresher, more floral, and ultimately more refined.

It begins with a crisp citrus opening of bergamot and grapefruit, providing a dose of juicy freshness that lasts well into the scent's delectably jammy rose heart. The rose is bolstered on the one hand by powdery lipstick iris, and on the other by a smooth leather accord. While the leather in Tauer's earlier Lonestar Memories was rough around the edges, saddle-worn, and infused with the smoke of a thousand campfires, the leather in Lonesome Rider is much more delicate, almost suede-like, and much less intensely smoky. It's also a lot sweeter and brighter, thanks to the rose and a touch of incense. The scent's base is similar to Lonestar, but less smoky and resinous, allowing the smooth woody notes to shine.

I regret not buying a bottle when Lonesome Rider was still available. Sadly, it has since been discontinued and is nearly impossible to find. I will treasure the last of my sample while I can, and hope that Tauer decides to revive it some day.

Surprisingly gentle
An uncharacteristically mild-mannered offering from Tauer, especially considering that I usually find leather quite overbearing. A bit of pepper, some dark rose, and plenty of leather in a deep, opaque base of, well, whatever notes are listed — I really couldn't tell you otherwise.

Don't get me wrong, this is still more than strong enough for my taste, and a single spritz goes a long way.

It's not for me, but I'm not surprised about that given the listed notes. I'm more surprised by how little I dislike it: I find it to be a rather interesting and compelling take on leather, and can certainly appreciate it.

The Cowboy in the White Shirt
This is how Andy Tauer himself sees his Lonesome Rider, the image he has painted in interviews: The Cowboy in the white shirt. - The longer I engage with this fragrance artwork, the better I understand this image.

After the first announcements at the beginning of the year, I was fixated on the notes of leather, smoke, and vetiver - exactly my wavelength, the anticipation was great! I ordered the bottle blind in pre-order at the generous introductory price, devoured the increasing information on www.lonesomerider.website, waited, finally smelled it... - and was thrown off track. My expectation was wrong, I was disappointed. Then I started from scratch, and the cowboy was able to draw me more to his side with each wear.

Mental predecessors include Tauer's third fragrance, the already 10-year-old "Lonestar Memories" (the second was the door opener "L'Air du Désert Marocain") and the unfortunately unknown to me "Orris," which was released in limited quantities around the same age. While "Lonestar Memories" is still a dirty blast that kicks down the birch wood door with leathery and animalistic tones, Lonesome Rider is much calmer. A complex scent of subtle presence that appears confidently but is not loud.

A crisp opening of bitter bergamot mingles with bitter grapefruit splashes. This is considered a citrus accord, okay, but this start is still not fresh. Refreshing, though! Very quickly, the powdery iris takes the stage, immediately stirred up by bristly pepper. These two lines are then bound by a dry rose - with only the slightest trace of cleanliness, I am sensitive to that - which gives the whole thing a somewhat chalky quality, so powdery, but also metallic tones. It's very hard to pinpoint. Simply beautiful.
Somewhere in here, the smoke also rises. No comparison to the campfire from Lonestar Memories, luckily also no clerical incense - I feel more dense white smoke trails than I smell them.
And one more thing, a counterpoint: A hint of animalistic undertone brings a nice greeting from the stable, making the previous construct harmoniously resonate. Secret tones are problematic, often appearing somewhat deliberately provocative, intentionally unpleasant. Not so in Lonesome Rider, the harmony is perfect!

The leather - whether it be the saddle on the aforementioned horse's back, perhaps the chaps protecting the pants, or the leather jacket - is given much space in several reviews. For me, at least, it is not dominant; I do not perceive LR as a leather scent at all. But a certain roughness continues where the pepper has left off, rubbing against the delicately floral body of the rose and already the ambery hum. Whether my beloved vetiver contributes to this, I cannot say; unusually, I do not even identify it in the drydown. Woody notes dominate the late finale...

"Notes closely intertwined" is said far too often in perfume reviews, but for Tauer fragrances, this applies (perhaps alongside those of Duchaufour) particularly. Lonesome Rider feels like a unified and coherent whole, no notes push themselves forward. However, anyone who wears such a fragrance many times and focuses on the components (within their (here: my) possibilities) learns and finds a few parts of a sum without being able to break the magic.

He went to get flowers... and never came back
With the new Tauer fragrance "Lonesome Rider," I was expecting an indirect successor to its leathery hit "Lonestar Memories" - especially after I noticed that my comment headline for this fragrance was coldly borrowed for the new one ;). I gladly allow this, and more of my titles can certainly be transformed into fragrances if they all turn out as fine & elegant as this sophisticated loner. And with the rough namesake, it hardly has anything to do anymore...

I like you, lonely rider - I must say. You are a loner, prefer to be alone, a thinker & not directly accessible. But I like you a lot. Maybe precisely because of that. You are not a sheriff, but respected by all. You carry flowers, yet you are always man enough. You have a slightly citrusy opening, but you are more of an autumn type. You are not a bull rider, rather on a noble steed in your element. You come to town, and every woman knows what she has in you. You are a loner, but you can still be relied upon. You are loyal & stand by your words, and if necessary, you follow through with actions. You are not a gunslinger, but you shoot more than sharply when it counts. You are into leather, without constantly putting on the latex look. You are fit, without appearing bulky & artificial. You are classic & yet new in town. You show the way, but also let others have their say. You are a leader, without wanting to be one. You are undoubtedly one of the good ones.

Bottle: always beautiful, the blue star!
Longevity: 8 hours is just fine, cowboy!
Sillage: a subtle rider - but masculine & distinctive enough, despite the flower prairie.

Conclusion: a down-to-earth loner, discreet & characterful. Strong in every respect, and not a pure leather scent, much more floral than one would expect - beautifully unique & simultaneously wearable!

The beautiful campfire-like smokiness weakens (unfortunately); as Vetiver, Rose and citrical notes get over, the scent appears more "tame".

From aversion comes sympathy. On the surface, rubber with a typical dry-vanilla-amber Tauer DNA. Unique, but surprisingly pleasant + cool.

The lonely rider swears by hoof care. Every day he oils his horse's hooves, which is why both exude the typical scent.
