Frankincense with subtle green petitgrain
Incense Extrême is pretty much a single-note incense fragrance save for a petitgrain note in the opening which accentuates the lemony terpenic aspects of the incense. Though they are very different, I can't help but make a connection to Search which uses a less subtle lemon essential oil for the same purpose. Incense Extrême almost feels like the little brother of Search, though I can see an argument for why the Tauer fragrance is the more subtle and classy of the two. I think this would have been a great choice when it was first released in 2008, but nowadays we have incense fragrances with more personality.

Dreamy frankincense
Absolutely gorgeous frankincense fragrance. It does justice to the B. serrata essential oil, which is the variety I believe he said he used. The fragrance is sharp and woody, makes me feel like I'm in the mountains, in a vast forest of blonde woods and craggy rocks, and the sun is shining so bright it blinds me. In my mind it smells like ancient Sparta. My only "complaint" is that the name should really refer more specifically to frankincense, as "incense" as a general term makes me think of a head shop. This is not smoky at all, and there is no sweetness whatsoever. I think the orris in here helps to smooth things out, so that the frankincense isn't even more sharp than it could be. This stuff is amazing. There is nothing about it I would want to change, so it's a 10/10 for me.

Not a favorite for me...
Begins very musty, like the closet of an old priest. It must be the frankincense that brings back flooding memories of Sunday mass. The frankincense fades and mellows as the life of the fragrance progresses. More underlying spices come through. Very green and woodsy comes up, also. Nutmeg and the coriander as mentioned in the notes. It mellows really nicely becoming more pleasant as the time passes. For me just a bit too heavy with the frankincense all along.

Starting Point Instead of Resting Cushion
The white correction fluid incense of the opening is so bright, airy, and clear, with a hint of citrus in the application, that it brushes against a greenish-tundra-like quality. One could almost rattle their teeth! A contribution of spice is plausible; I certainly wouldn't have thought of coriander on my own. Let's take a closer look: Petitgrain? I don't notice the orangey part at all, and the scraggly one only with a good deal of imagination. Only after about ten minutes could I imagine something orangey. An idea of darkened, even gently sparkling citrus fruit in the background that deliciously complements the bright smoke - Citral? Within a quarter of an hour, a splash of standard Tauer rubber also breaks through like a counterpoint. I'm curious to see where this goes.

How original! The scent thus becomes, on average, a notch darker. This means: The two aromas do not merge, as smelling close to the skin undoubtedly reveals. Only with a bit of distance do the scents blend into a more robust light incense note.

However, there is still something else dark beneath it. Spontaneously, I would have guessed patchouli on the border of chocolatey, but I quickly moved away from that and instead think of - coconut? For me, a sign of synthetic wood. Aha, the "dry woods" come from various corners...

Everything is as transparent as it is varied. Very successful. The overarching theme of "Light Incense" does not become a resting cushion, but rather a starting point for a wavering that includes Tauer bitter rubber, creamy and subtly citrus aspects, and an entertaining puppet theater of various woods. And this shifting takes the place of a scent progression.

After eight or nine hours, it is nearing the end. Sloooowly. And without the scent changing significantly. From the late afternoon on, it simply becomes quieter, yet remains noticeably present well into the evening - bright, citrusy incense until the end, although now very subdued.

I find "extreme" in this scent, in contrast to some previous commentators, quite minimal. Both in terms of the ingredients and the extent of their sharpness, and certainly in terms of volume, there are quite different candidates. One might recall the stricter sacredness in Cardinal or the bitter-pale wood note from Kyoto; the respective intensity is not reached by Incense Extrême. Even the "house brand" - the Tauer rubber - falls significantly short of what has been experienced before; I'm specifically thinking of Lonestar Memories.

Only the longevity can be described, silence or not, as extraordinary; however, I still struggle with the term "extreme" in this regard. So let's possibly dismiss the name addition as a little wink and enjoy a successful, stable, high-quality essentially incense scent that delivers on its promises from A to Z and (I’m adding another point, denying "extreme"!) even makes a good impression in the office.

I thank Yatagan for the sample.

Boswelia Psychotika
Finally, a perfume name that fits like a glove: Tauer's "Incense Extrême" is indeed a challenge for the nose. The opening is like an olfactory laser beam: glaring and dazzling, bitter-spicy aromas rush into the nose, leaving a scent echo reminiscent of vulcanized rubber - something anyone who has ever patched a bicycle tire knows. Reading the fragrance pyramid only minimally clarifies the perception: I "detect" the coriander, attributing its leaves with the quirky rubber note - yet I remain trapped in a synthetic-chemical realm. Fascinating - or disgusting, depending on personal taste.

Boswelia Serrata - the Indian frankincense - pushes through the perception threshold very early on. Compared to its more familiar brother "Sacra," it smells brighter and greener. The composition doesn't even attempt to present the frankincense comfortably: in combination with the harsh top note, one might think it has "powdered its little nose." This frankincense encounters the nose completely overdriven, almost a bit toxic and loud. Even its aromas seem distorted: the fire burns on speed - and feeds on rubberized herbs in a bitter marinade. A bit of gray is mixed into the synesthetic scent perception on the iris side, without any hint of floral notes; at best, the perfumer briefly waves with the powder puff but gives no thought to baroque opulence.

Nevertheless, the bouquet is more appealing than my text suggests: the way the frankincense appears here as a radiant noisemaker is spectacular. With some distance from the skin, "Incense Extrême" almost acts as an aromatherapeutic pick-me-up, as it gains a cheerfully blazing freshness that sinks into the cacophony of aromas from close range.

I read that I should still encounter amber; I gladly believe it contributes to the fixation, but I have massive difficulties catching the note. Perhaps it manifests itself as a dampener and softener, as the cacophony indeed becomes duller and more pleasantly muted over time. However, the character hardly changes; at most, one can detect a faint hint of sweetness in the drydown. The dry woods are anyway being burned; at least they don't scream while dying a fiery death, thus not obstructing the described calming of the scent.

Chemically, the longevity is also impressive: Tauer has done a great job here, binding the wearer to consistency. What was sprayed on in the evening withstands the morning shower. The very good projection is due to the harsh character: just as high notes carry better in a room, in this case, the overexposed aromas radiate richly and sustainably into the surroundings.

Conclusion: Definitely not something to bury your nose in the skin, but far better than the first impression suggests. Individual, fresh in a way not yet encountered, and striking as well - Tauer manages the feat of presenting a very authentic Indian frankincense on cocaine. It will be easier to despise it than to like it, which is probably less difficult than one might think.

My thanks go to Ergoproxy for his almost encyclopedic frankincense sample donation!

EDIT from 11.11.:
I ended up using my little decant more frequently - and with each spray, Tauer's scent and I drew closer together. The described perception remains largely accurate; however, my approach to the scent has changed. What initially irritated me now fascinates me: I have rarely experienced a perfume that has such a strong aroma-therapeutic effect on me! "Incense Extreme" is indeed olfactory doping; I emphasize the aforementioned "pick-me-up effect" doubly at this point and add a (imagined) concentration-enhancing effect. Above all, I enjoy the quirky freshness formula of the scent, which manages to clear the nostrils without mint. The rubber associations have largely disappeared; their meager remnants still make the composition particularly exciting for me.

Conclusion II: Frankincense on speed still holds true - but today I also gladly bury my nose directly in the scent experience. Tauer's "Incense Extreme" is simply a hot number - and therefore, I can't help but include it in the small circle of my 100-percenters!

Different from most, this incense fragrance is quite dry, woody and herbal in a way I haven't encountered before. Clean, soapy finish, too!

Agree with the "woody-marine". Not my fav Tauer but a great incense. Crisp and delicate. A sort of incense-cologne with a unique personality

Warming crisp incense on a cooling creamy, powdery, soapy base with Tauer twist. Gorgeous. Not your run of the mill church take on incense.

If Tauer can do anything, it's incense. It's surrounded by a lot of coriander and lightly sweet woody undertones. Very unique.
