Bergamote
This fragrance opens with notes of ginger, rhubarb and various citruses. The resulting accord is perfect for hot summer days; rhubarb and ginger emphasise the tartness of lemon and downplay the sweetness of orange blossom, creating a very refreshing experience. The scent calms down considerably in its mid-development as green and woodsy notes emerge. A faint trace of bergamot is present throughout the whole progression until the dry down. Unfortunately the fragrance does not last very long on me, after only two hours it is gone.

Ginger Citrus Cologne
When I saw that this sample cube read BERGAMOTE, I had pretty low expectations for a fragrance bearing the name of a note found in 33% of all perfumes and usually not playing a starring role--perhaps for a reason?

Those expectations were met and exceeded. There's certainly more than bergamot in this refreshing citrus cologne. The ginger blends in to produce a tonic which reminds me for obvious reasons of Bond no 9 NEW YORK FLING, also a citrus-ginger composition.

In a side-by-side comparison, I find NEW YORK FLING certainly more declarative but also more interesting than BERGAMOTE, probably because of the touch of florality and basil mingling with the wood. I also think that as a straight-up citrus, BERGAMOTE does not really stand out from the crowd and has poor longevity even in this category notorious for evanescence.

Not from Italy
Bergamot is quite a sober little character. It lacks the maternal warmth of orange, the plump allure of tangerine, and certainly not the aggressive vitality of lemon. It is less euphoric than the others, rather composed, almost a bit intellectual. With its own cool calm, it refrains from any tumult, yet it possesses a gentle glow that makes one long for the blaze of southern suns. No wonder such a modest, diplomatic thing is often used to reconcile polarizing notes. When I study fragrance pyramids, I hardly notice it anymore, as it is so frequently present in everything. And as often as it grants smoothing and liveliness to other notes, it is rarely showcased as a solo performer. Jean-Claude Elléna addresses this injustice with a beautiful creation, namely this fragrance here. Quiet, lovely, and yet characteristically cool, it presents us with a guaranteed natural-fresh bergamot. Swiftly, it is joined by ginger, which adds an underlying, attractive spiciness. Calm and somewhat grim, the bergamot watches as more and more aromas gather around it, without its central position being challenged in the slightest. Rhubarb, that sympathetic grump, contributes all the sour juice it can muster, and that is quite a lot. Plus, the most magnificent green leaf accord! Someone must have climbed to the densest, most spoiled treetops for that. :) It quickly becomes apparent that this bergamot fragrance is not one from the sunny shore, but rather tied to a kind of garden aesthetic. Sounds odd as a thought, but smells wonderful as a perfume. Although the Sicilian flair occasionally shines through, the essence of this fragrance is the emphasis on sour and green elements. The fact that these elements are already inherent in the bergamot and are not added by the other notes but rather coaxed out is very exciting. To achieve this, one must be an intimate connoisseur of the character of bergamot. Elléna has composed an innovative, beautifully sprouting fragrance for all citrus enthusiasts that is much more than a simple refreshing water!

The Master's Handwriting…

… it is simple, unembellished, and somewhat distant. I have several fragrances by Jean-Claude Ellena in my collection - it may be a coincidence, but they all have one thing in common. They strike me as the highly stylized embodiment of an idea from nature. I think of Ikebana, the artful Japanese flower arrangements with their precise minimalism, adhering to strict rules. A voluntary self-restraint to the essentials, which I find very appealing.

Bergamot by The Different Company is no exception for me. At the center, artfully illuminated, is the namesake bergamot. Now one could sarcastically remark that’s it, but that would do an injustice to this ethereal fragrance creation. The bergamot is accompanied by some delicate pastel helpers from the master of understatement, a brushstroke of ginger sharpness, a dab of green, a hint of flower, a touch of acidity.
This additional acidity is what I like the least about the fragrance. At first, it comes across as almost vinegar-sour, the pyramid identifies it as rhubarb, but amusingly, it reminds me more of the smell of vegetable aspic as time goes on. After a while, this unwanted component recedes into the background, leaving behind a translucent, understated scent.
One is unlikely to attract attention with it; I would estimate the sillage as practically non-existent. However, on days when I feel a bit scent-weary or after a restless night, it is a perfectly balanced and thus calming companion.

Can you actually hate summer?
Aaaaah,… everyone likes summer, right?
FALSE!! There are also people who don’t like summer that much, sometimes even can’t really stand it. There are those who can’t tolerate the heat. Which is quite understandable, as I also don’t always enjoy it when I stick to the seats or elsewhere on those very muggy days… and when I finally peel myself off, it feels like someone is trying to rip my skin or hair off… (well, seen that way, it’s a kind of free hair removal, but still… :D).

Then it can be a bit annoying if you didn’t get a chance for a vacation this year. Especially when the majority of summer here has brought only a few good days and instead there was a lot of rain… there were even floods recently… and the few good days were unfortunately those TOO hot and muggy days I described above, where you end up complaining again about the heat (yes,… one is never satisfied :DD)

Moreover, summer can be a total drag for those who are single… especially when the girls (from a male perspective :D) look so fresh, carefree, and lightly dressed… waaah! …. Hm, I guess that’s what they call “a lot of legroom”!!! he he *sigh* :D

Well… at least there are scents like this “Bergamote” from TDC that make the heat a little more bearable for a moment, only my cat runs away from such scents, but he doesn’t need such fragrances since he seems to really enjoy summer and lies peacefully on his back (and if he should be sleeping with a drooling mouth) in the sun, having a good time! I must say, he is quite enviable,… oh, to be a cat! :D

But let’s get to the scent!

The scent:
At the beginning, you smell citrusy bergamot and herbal ginger. The bergamot has, besides the refreshing effect, a slight tea-like aura and sometimes smells more like lemons/limes. Then you also smell oranges (instead of orange blossoms), so the scent has a long-lasting citrus aroma and is nicely refreshing.
The citrus notes are still well detectable in the heart note; I perceive the green scents a bit less. I think you can smell a bit of bitter-scented leaves or plant juices here, but the bitter tone fits well with the citrus fragrance direction.
I believe that later on, I also smell the sour rhubarb, as the scent note is somewhat similar to the rhubarb note from Hermès’ fragrance “Eau de Rhubarbe Écarlate,” which I have used more often on hot days lately (only no one here knows that, as I am often too lazy to indicate it in “What are you wearing?” here :D). However, this doesn’t last very long.
The base remains citrusy sour. However, you get the feeling that the scent smells quite similar from start to finish without any significant changes. A bit later, the scent gets a slightly sweet note from the musk.
The sillage and longevity:
The sillage is rather weak. At first, due to the citrus notes, it is still strong and refreshing, but the impression doesn’t last very long, so the scent quickly loses its strength and can really only be perceived nearby. Regarding longevity, the scent stays on the skin for about five or six hours, but you only really get to enjoy the scent for two or three hours, as the rest is just a faint remnant of the fragrance that is hardly noticeable.

The bottle:
The bottle is rectangular and apparently has either a label on the front, or things like the name and logo are printed directly on the bottle. The cap is, as always, the highlight of the bottle and looks like a rounded, chrome-plated staircase.

The scent itself is quite nice, as long as you are into citrus fragrances, because even though this scent is rather weak, it mostly smells just sourly refreshing, even if it becomes slightly sweeter in the base.

Aside from the weak sillage, the scent has a major weakness: It is too simple, too plain, too interchangeable, and just doesn’t smell that special, even if it doesn’t smell bad per se. But especially such citrus scents can be found everywhere, at various prices. At least the scent from The Different Company doesn’t have a synthetic aftertaste. If you happen to see the scent for little money, you can use it as a freshener for hot days, to possibly curse less when it gets too hot and you’re sticking everywhere…

Hmm… cats… lovable at any time, but on muggy hot days, so many hairs stick to your leg (when wearing shorts) from them rubbing against you, that it looks like you have fur yourself :D

Great minimalistic citrus (not esp. bergamote) scent. Perhaps it is the rhubarb that gives it its particular tart zing. Well done!

A modern, minimalist take on the traditional Eau de Cologne. What you can smell, which is very little, is beautiful and sunny. Splurge only.

Juicy, slightly honey-sweet lemon-orange tea with a subtle green-spicy soapy note. Nuanced, dense, elegant, and a bit distant.

Strong bergamot and bitter orange blossom create a powerful, fresh green scent with a punch. After about an hour, it almost smells like lemongrass.

Dry-bitter bergamot with typical floral notes & slender fruitiness. Tingly, with ginger sharpness, warm & softly layered. Good!

The bergamot here is beautifully juicy, almost bite-worthy, but unfortunately not very long-lasting - and do I really want to smell this fruity?

Dreamy, zesty, very natural bergamot, with green nuances developing and floral clouds in the background. Very refined and nuanced.

Starts with juicy, not sharp bergamot and ends with a creamy-floral rhubarb note. Becomes sweeter over time. I see it more for women.
