Sole di Positano. So beautiful!
Absolutely lovely, bright and sunny, slightly floral citrus blended to perfection! Stays quite linear with the main focus on bittersweet citruses surrounded by naturally soft and sweet flowers gradually yielding to a smoothly green and mossy base; It perfoms well on me, the way the spring/summer fragrance has to perform. So beautiful!

orange blossom
The opening is a paradigmatic citric summer blast: bergamot (Calabrian per the company blurb), oranges, mandarin and a lemon - the latter determines the overall lack of sweetness and that touch of a tangy undertone I get. Very lovely and refreshing, but only lasting for the first couple of hours or so.

Then floral notes emerge, with an orange blossom being dominant on me; although a muguet with touches of a very light ylang-ylang, a touch of pallid shiso leaves, and a faint jasmine in the background. Towards the end a bit a wood-free neroli and a bland set of white musks make brief appearances.

I get moderate sillage, good projection, and five hours of longevity on my skin.

This summer scent lives by the first part, the citrus blast. The rest is rather mediocre, except for the orange blossom. 3.25/5

Clean-washed creamy Mediterrano with a conservative stature
How many are left now? After I tried (in vain) Ford's "Portofino Forte" last year, which doesn't stand out among dozens of previously released summer Mediterranos (and unfortunately comes off as somewhat artificial due to a slightly clean-washed cleanliness), it's time to test an "American Italian" again.

The price hits the wallet in a typically arrogant (and ultimately completely exaggerated) Ford manner (100 ml - 298 Euro). People who love surprises and felt the greatest excitement as a child when opening a Kinder Egg should steer clear of the Positano sun. Because there is really nothing new this year either.

Compared to last year's "Forte," I actually prefer the new one a bit more. The opening is predominantly summer lively, dominated by mandarin, lemon, and bergamot. This is quite uplifting, especially considering the rather mixed German summer so far.

Orange blossom also comes into play after about a quarter of an hour, accompanied by noticeably measured jasmine, which gives the fragrance a slightly feminine touch.
Overall, it is creamy, soft, very rounded - and yet I am slightly bothered - as noted last year with "Forte" - by a very slightly laundry-clean hyper-clean (Iso-E-Super?) accord that contributes to the longevity, but at the same time (once again) weaves in this somewhat flat cleanliness note. Fortunately, it is more subtle than with "Forte," but still noticeable.

Overall, it's nicely (and reliably boring) made, ultimately no mistake in summer for people who can playfully handle their money.

Fordism in Lagoon Blue
The small town of Positano - located about fifty kilometers south of Naples above the Tyrrhenian Sea and probably the most famous place on the Amalfi Coast - inspired Tom Ford for his latest summer fragrance. Many of these summer perfumes - most in beautiful blue bottles - revolve around the similarly named and comparably legendary Portofino, which is located much further north in Liguria. The older ones thematize the fleeting lightness of neroli, while the newer ones are oriented towards an elegant floral sunscreen accord: Soleil Blanc, for example, or Orchid Soleil and Fleur de Portofino. Sole di Positano - it tells of steep alleys in dazzling sunlight over an azure bay and beautiful signore and signori making 'bella figura' on the piazza - joins this group.

And it is precisely here that Tom Ford disappoints with this fundamentally beautiful and expressive scent - which does not more than join in, recite, and regurgitate - and which strives to create nothing new, not even attempting to do so. There are many themes, certainly also summery ones, that are still completely missing from Mr. Ford's portfolio from Texas - one with tuberose, for example, or a moist green aquatic plant scent. Instead, Sole di Positano relies entirely on Ford's successful recipe from recent years and varies it only as slightly as the shading of the bottle. The result is elegant summer freshness in delicate lagoon blue - and yet, as if Casa Ford had served pasta with tomato sauce and pasta with seafood, now simply pasta with seafood in tomato sauce. Not bad. But for Casa Ford, it's actually not enough.

Conclusion: in economics, there is the term 'Fordism' - named after Henry Ford and not Tom. Strongly simplified, Fordism refers to an extremely high standardization of the product and its manufacturing method: machine, mass, mainstream. And thus, it is actually not at all what Tom, the younger Mr. Ford of the two (the older - Henry - lived and worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but they are both Americans), seeks to convey in his perfumes. Sole di Positano seems almost as if one simply mixed equal parts of Fleur de Portofino, Orchid Soleil, and Soleil Blanc and added a splash of Mandarino di Amalfi and Neroli Portofino. It was quick and required little effort, and it still smells quite good. Nevertheless: it could be better.

Jasmin Musk
What a simple, great summer scent this is?! Elegant, consistent, high-quality down to the tips of the hair. Monotonous, bitter, but overall extraordinarily versatile and simply wearable for me. Of course, a bit outrageously priced, but as a fragrance itself, it's already a big deal.

Old-school luxury, casual and relaxed, masculine and self-assured. Oak moss refined with citrus splashes, aldehydes meet chest hair, jasmine goes to the gym. Typical Tom Ford. It's all been done before, but not in such a polished and refined way, defined and trained, laid-back and powerful. This is artificial naturalness to the max. It smells of adventurers and thick wallets, of the Mediterranean and beach villas, of coupes and salty breezes. A poem and grand advertisement for Positano. Sunny, sensual, contemplative. Perfect with olives, a fine wine, and a relaxed snack. A secret member of the upper echelons. Without bragging or showing off. The opposite of the Geissens. Even if some themes and accents of other blue-turquoise Tom Fords are just repeated.

Bottle: Tom Ford has created something iconic here...
Sillage: delicate and summery.
Longevity: super nice, but disappears too quickly - 3-5 hours in the sun. But that's what it should be made for.

Conclusion: an almost perfect holiday scent. If one is a millionaire. Or just looking for the one. Masculine, summery, light, green and blue and southern in every molecule. A classic men's fragrance, sexy and fresh. You have to manage a lot of jasmine first. And actually super simple. Here just flawlessly and luxuriously prepared and updated.

Way better than Neroli Portofino. Still overpriced for a perfume that lasts 1h at most...

Dead ringer for vintage Bain de Soleil sunless tanner ... guess if you know, you know. But given I doused myself as a teen, it's a pass. :)

The bottle shines bright green, and the scent is a bitter-floral variant of 47** / Neroli Portofino. Like water in a turquoise bay!

A beautiful addition to the existing TF summer scents. Floral notes are complemented by fine citrus ingredients.
