I Said I Loved You, But I Lied...
Full disclosure: I tested 4 Tom Fords last week within 2 hours. This was the first applied and I was wild for it at the beginning! Springlike magnolia breeze and just a tiny wisp of buttery gardenia, with a gentleness and never overwhelming Earl Grey note. I sensed a dull steady woody backbone, wearing a spicy ginger suit. My initial reaction was "Ummm...creamy, yet fresh...definitely Unisex, easily a 3-season signature scent...sold!" Then as I contemplated the infamous Tom Ford price tags, and let the scent open up on my arm, that cashmere and sandalwood base became louder and more insistent "Hey Girl, Can I have your number?", it began to shout. I felt that sudden sense of annoyance I have experienced with Illuminum's "Bergamot Blossom" and Lubin's "Nuit de Longchamp". None of these are bombastic, cheaply acquired, all are substantial and display masterful work...but as inexplicably as a heartfelt ballad by Michael Bolton, these three scents just get on my nerves, literally. What was happening to my 'Precious' was it a malvolent Sauron in disguise? I wondered on to test TF's "Shanghai Lily" on paper and then gave "Champaca Absolute" a second testing on my other arm. Meanwhile chatting away about fragrance with the SR and how "Neroli Portofino" is my go-to summer fragrance but I can't bare it when it is cold and grey and I am filled with bitter tears...30 minutes flew by like 10. Back to the Venetian Bergamot, now fully warm and fully developed on my arm, I went from Love to definitely not happening in the span of an hour. But you can't knock a guy for trying. The good news is that if you are looking for an effervescent splash of ginger, not unlike Origins "Ginger Essence", to chaperon a dry woody bergamot-centric main event with notes of light fresh magnolia dancing about, this will provide adequate sillage of 6-8 hours, fairly close to the skin and without compromising on quality ingredients. It's perfectly fine really, just not perfect enough for me.

Tom Ford’s Underrated Classic
This is a very well done lemon-y fragrance that plays well in cooler weather. The primary note I get is a bright citrus with some white floral notes and a nice creamy vanilla base. It reminds me of a lemon cheesecake in the best way. I don’t get a lot of development in the scent profile, but that’s just fine by me. I know others may disagree with me, but this feels like a warmer weather fragrance that can work in slightly cooler weather thanks to the creamy base. I don’t get many woody notes off it. The performance is quite good; I get a full workday out of it and projection is decent without being overbearing. Due to the price, this isn’t the easiest to recommend for blind buy, but it feels like a hidden gem compared to the rest of the Private Blend!

When the Gardenias Wear Mourning
Its name initially evokes associations of a rich and opulent fragrance - lush and full of ripe, perhaps overripe fruits - akin to the feast at the table of a prince who is both unrestrained and immoral. Instead, however, it reminds one of another, a dark and nocturnal Venice. When you find yourself lost among the canals, when every light appears very close yet remains out of reach, when foreign voices seem to whisper an enticing song in the gurgling of the water, when the nighttime houses and the shadows between them possess a strange and surreal beauty.

And then a child in a red raincoat fleetingly appears between the bridge pillars - and when you try to look, there is nothing but darkness and deceptive emptiness. 'When the Gondolas Wear Mourning' is the title of one of the most famous horror films in cinematic history from 1973, which profoundly changed its viewers' relationship with Venice (and with children in red raincoats). The city in the lagoon appears in the film as shady and abyssal, and as is not uncommon in this genre, there is something threatening in every scene, no comfort, no protection, and no safety.

Tom Ford's Venetian Bergamot plays with all these associations and the same dark images. A shimmering transparent citrus blossom reveals a pale glowing gardenia between ylang-ylang and fleeting white feathery flowers, and an ambivalent, dark accord follows in its wake - patchouli seems to be present, and upon closer sniffing, it also seems to be absent. And then - equally incredulous as it is unexpected, the hint of recognition between strangely familiar woods and a velvety alluring sweetness - as if a dark, eerie voice whispered very softly from the depths: 'Beware!'

Conclusion: those who appreciate dark, challenging, and abyssal fragrances should take Venetian Bergamot to heart. It is dark and pale and hauntingly beautiful.

Hopes Destroyed - Promising Name, Ultimately a (Mourning) Flower-Laden Sunscreen
No, I know, I usually can't rely on Tom Ford. I've had that realization for a while now. So much is inflated, so overly American, lacking the nonchalance of French or Italian fragrances, even though Mr. Ford often names his scents after regions of these countries.

Here, however, I thought it might end up being something cheerful and Mediterranean. But one must probably understand the "Venetian" in the sense of Mann's "Death in Venice" or - as Löwenherz mentioned below - the "mourning gondolas."

Yes, the namesake bergamot is a bad joke. Exactly - I looked at the clock - 17 seconds after spraying, a joyful citrus delight lasts, inviting, Mediterranean, summery.

And then - bang!!! It's over. A unfortunately painfully intrusive floral composition of gardenia, ylang-ylang, and magnolia steps so affected and narcissistically into the foreground that it hurts. I don't mean that the scent is loud - compared to other shouty "Hi! Everything fine, guys!!!" Fords, this one is quite refined, at best a bit louder than a sunscreen.

And this brings me back to my title. A sunscreen composed of these intrusive-smelling flowers, which are more suited for mourning attire than wedding arrangements, cool, somewhat dull, underlined by (unfortunately) somewhat persistent Pepperwood (TM!), weaving a milky synthetic veil underneath.

No, I can't make anything of it - perhaps the ladies have a slightly different perspective on this - but I don't perceive it as unisex, rather distinctly feminine. Unfortunately, no photo of me. Really not.

When the citrus scent can be a bit heavier...
The pepper-spiced opening immediately appeals to AugustA. It briefly becomes ultra-dry, then the juicy bergamot comes in, drawing the pepperiness to itself and gaining a slightly floral touch. Ylang Ylang pushes its way up from below into the top note. And gardenia.

Through the Venetian mask, mysterious glances flash.

The sillage occupies space like a velvet cloak thrown around the shoulders with flair. The gardenia presents itself as seriously seductive, and in combination with the radiant, zesty bergamot, it cannot become overwhelming; the overall impression remains somewhat flirtatious at first. But gradually, the scent takes on a hint of melancholy.
This is definitely something for the evening or when the citrus scent can be a bit heavier.
I briefly look around to see if we suddenly have heavy brocade wallpaper on the walls. Phew, no.

Then the heaviness recedes, it becomes fresh and bright again, but no less expressive; one catches a hint of powder behind the mask.

Soon the scent becomes calm, but it retains an underlying charm. Above the delicate woody base, a velvety floral scent lingers, and until the end, a hint of bergamot remains.

A semi-dramatic composition that unfortunately becomes a bit quiet too quickly at the end; perhaps that’s for the best, as I like it this way.
Especially the shimmer.

Fantastic bergamot! ...for about ten minutes. Then it is pure sandalwood, cashmere and amber. False marketing.

Slammed with peppery bergamot TF tea with spiky sandal-ish woods. Like rocking a proud Louis Vuitton bag dupe. Rather endearing OTT.

A bit more floral than
"Aqua Allegoria Bergamote Calabria"
although the Ford lacks the lovely
Guerlain musk in the base ;)

Surprisingly atypical, this dry, ginger-dusted bergamot feels composed and calm with a mature floral accompaniment.

Subtle bergamot with creamy white flowers. Smells like women's body lotion, but I like it. Naturally!

Starts wonderfully citrusy-peppery, then lots of flowers and soft wood. Too feminine for me, but super beautiful.

I've ignored this scent for too long. Great citrus start, lovely floral heart, and elegant sandalwood in the dry down. TF nails it.

I really don't understand why this is a Private Blend scent. Citrusy-peppery floral soup.
