Specificity is polarizing
One of my favorite fragrance YouTubers is Justin Copeland. The title of this review is a mantra of his, and it has stuck with me: "specificity is polarizing." I think it not only applies to perfume, but all forms of art as well. Most people prefer a $20 bottle of wine to a $200 one. And that is not a failing on the part of those who prefer the cheaper bottle. It's just that the expensive bottle is for more specific tastes. Most people are going to find it below average, but for the few that like the specific tasting notes it contains in that combination, it is going to be a 10/10.

Ébène Fumé is a Specific fragrance with a capital "S." Powerful, smoky, dry, resinous woods with little-to-no-sweetness. Reading the reviews and statements, it seems as though half of the reviewers like me, think it is incredible, while the other half find it linear and one-dimensional. Which it is - balsamic resins, smoky cade, dry papyrus, dusty violet leaf come together to paint an absolutely desolate landscape. For me, it is gorgeous in its simplicity and minimalism. No florals, no vanilla, no spices that would usually be added to balance out the woodiness in most other oriental fragrances.

Fragrances like this are the reason I think blind-buying based on recommendation is pointless. No one is going to call this blind-buy worthy. It is not mass-appealing, it is not easy-to-wear, it is not even necessarily pleasant. But when you only buy fragrances that are 8/10s for everybody, you miss out on fragrances that are perfect or near-perfect to you specifically.

A hidden gem in the Tom Ford private line and one that everyone should try, but never blind-buy.

a tiger queen who set her kingdom on fire
Tom Ford's Ébène Fumé with its incandescent glowing cacophony of sunset woods majesty, spider-pronged and prickly tines of moody-fiery black pepper, and the mystical ambiguity of palo santo’s piney/licorice/camphor vibe is a brazenly beautiful scent, perilously intense, and all-consuming. Smoky, regal, and fearsome, a tiger queen who set her kingdom on fire rather than see it fall, the incense burned on an altar of protection, invoking darksome saints with flaming swords. Desperate, dangerous prayers granted in gorgeous and terrible ways.

Not a blind buy
From the first spray it is an intensely burning fire with amber, incense and spices. The pepper and spice seem more of a culinary twang than the usual blended olfactory smell. It lasts on the skin, it’s a very noticeable aroma. You will either like it or want to wash it off with a metal scrubbing pad! I think it has the potential to be that divisive.

As the hours go by it settles, but not by much. The intensity of the fire dies down but it is still very much there. I like the originality and I’m impressed by its development when on the skin, it’s just not my kind of scent and that is the only reason I wouldn’t buy it, a little too rough round the edges and incense-y for me, but will impress alot of people and quite rightly so.

UPDATE: I have now worn this 5 times and it has totally won me over. Next on my private blend list!

Bewitching
I'm not much of a fan of TF's other "dark" scents except for Oud Wood (too much tobacco/leather, I think), but I'm absolutely bewitched by this one! To me it smells like my favorite woody incenses. Mysterious, alluring, and sexy. It's my go-to for nights out, either alone or layered with a white floral for a softer vibe. It lasts absolutely forever (seriously, I wore it to a party last Friday and can still smell it on the clothes I wore as of today, Wednesday) and has the perfect sillage imo (people will notice you entering a room but not all the way at the other end of the bar). I think it's extremely unisex and am confused by the consensus it's more masculine! Maybe I'm biased because I favor woody, spicy scents but to me it's so easy to see it as an exotic femme fatale kind of scent, like a sorceress luring you into her sumptuously adorned home. There's something that feels sort of sacred and magical, spellbinding!, about it.

Ébène Fumé: Interesting enough
I vowed to avoid any Tom Ford in their latest ridiculous price bracket. I did test it though and that instigated a hunt and I found a deal at about a little over half the list price. That fits the bill. It is a lot like Bois Marocain, which I like, but it is better, as if a dash of London is added and the volume set at 9. I really like the woodsy notes, they remind me of Port Orford ceder, a smell you might know if you make arrows. It has legs too, I get nice waffs from the collarbones up for about 7 hours and they make me smile. ‘Cause it is a good waff. Unfortunately it is a rather linear scent. After the top has passed (with that odd palo santo note, some incense and a prickly pepper) it is what it is and stays that way. I think at the list price, a scent should take you on a journey, and it does not do that. It does give you a very nice destination however, if you can find a deal for it.

Extremely wearable, masculine, dry and woody fragrance that's as clean as it is smoky. Super versatile, a good daily use candidate.

Incense is initially pushy and papery. When it becomes quieter, fine resinous woods and occasionally soft leather shimmer through.

I mean, meh? It’s well done, but it doesn’t move me and smells surprisingly basic for Tom Ford. Like, what was the point of this?

So I got Eilish 2 before ever smelling this and wow the TF is just leaps and bounds ahead. It’s dry, dark, leathery sexiness. I’m obsessed

I swore I'd never buy Tom Ford again, but I had to make an exception for this one. Top tier wood/smoke delight.

Very smoky and projects like crazy on my skin. 2 sprays and I’m set. Gorgeous but only in colder weather.

I find this the best of TF I've smelled. Deep smoky wood with a bit of balsamic sourness.

One of my most complimented scents. Dark, sexy, mysterious, and a little naughty. Feels like wearing black silk by a wood fire.

Very nice warm and smoky woods scent. Has some hints of incense too that add a bit of depth that I really enjoy.

Like wearing dry down of Santal Blush in a room with smoking palo santo sticks and someone has lit their resinous pot pipe.
