Top scent... but
Wonderful opening and then dries down to a vetiver base that's also great.

Very distinctive and unique. It would be in my top 10 if it lasted more than two hours in my skin.

The mojito note is stunning, very close to the real thing.

Anyway this is a must have. For me it's a citric/fresh reference fragrance.

Nice boozy scent
I actually like this fragrance. Launched in 2008 this is boozy, woody and kinda tropical. Can be worn during the summer strolling on the beach in the tropics. With notes of Lime, Mojito and Mint it's no wonder. A nice combination up front and then it makes it's way down to the base with cedar closing it out. Longevity is average at best but an eau de toilette concentration explains it. Although some edts are beasts this one surely is not. 4 or 5hrs max b4 reapplying. Also it's been discontinued but there's an eau de parfum available, although that's nothing to write home about either. ;)

summery vibe
Let me start off this review by saying, I love this cologne. Honestly, I think it is fantastic and will have a spot in my rotation for a long time. The highlight of this fragrance, is the mojito accord consisting of lime, rum, sugar, and mint notes.

Yes, the main accord is based on an alcoholic drink but when blended with these other notes, it really makes Guerlain stand out.

Guerlain Homme opens up with the juicy citrus notes of lime and bergamot. These two are paired with rum for an instantaneous boozy beginning. If you don’t like alcoholic notes in your fragrances, this is one you should avoid, but going with the mojito aroma was a very interesting choice in my mind.

Plenty of other colognes have used rum to a much darker and spicier effect (Bvlgari Man in Black), but going the tropical route is pretty cool.

The top of the fragrance is quite sweet, due to the sugar note, but is balanced by the mint, which provides a fresh upbeat spice that really shines when contrasted with the lime juice cleanliness. Still, gives off that summery vibe throughout the wear.

The sweet notes do not dominate this scent completely, however. It is anchored by the woodsy and green floral notes which add a masculine aura to this cologne.

Cedar is at the base and vetiver is also highly present during the dry down period. It becomes less citrus/sweet and more fresh/dry, though, the citrus notes are still the main attraction.

Guerlain has a definite fresh energy to it that dries down into a crisp, almost powdery fragrance, which will leave a man smelling clean throughout the day.

Sniffing Out Depths
I am actually a bit shaken by how poorly my favorite brand Guerlain is rated for this fragrance (note the double meaning). Now, it is true that so many perfume experts cannot be wrong. Apparently, the majority does not appreciate the scent very much. I can also understand that the L'Eau variant performs better, yet I do not see the gap between the two Guerlain brothers as wide as the rating suggests.

I was initially a bit disappointed with Homme as well. I do like the top note very much: Parallels to the L'eau and Intense variants are recognizable, as well as to Vetiver and Vetiver Extreme. Seen in this light, one could speak of a modern version of the Guerlinade. While the old version, found in Habit Rouge, Heritage, and various women's perfumes (especially Shalimar), relied on various herbs, jasmine, iris, tonka bean, bergamot, rose, and vanilla, as well as various indeterminate secret ingredients, the new variant features mint, hesperidic notes, presumably green tea, as well as vetiver and cedar - and here too in a combination that, in my opinion, is very distinctive and likely represents the masculine signature of the house of Guerlain in the 21st century (exceptions are the L'Instant fragrances, which set a completely different accent and personally do not appeal to me as much).

Now, my plea for a rediscovery of Guerlain Homme: Since the fragrance has relatively few edges and corners, it seems appropriate to bring the nose very close to the skin to discover details. When one smells very gently, barely moving the nostrils, thus only checking very selectively, the complexity of the scent is revealed, which is not perceived as well or at all when just a few centimeters away from the skin. The task is essentially to sniff out the depths.

Interestingly, I feel similarly when testing the fragrance from a greater distance. Here too, I arrive at a different assessment than when I smell the fragrance intensely and directly. This scent wants to be subtle and remain so, and it shows a good substance precisely in that. This could also be the reason why the environment rates Guerlain Homme significantly more positively than many wearers themselves.

Of course, one must acknowledge that "Homme" is and remains the compromise fragrance from the house of Guerlain. It does not want to hurt, does not commit to a clear target group, and simply wants to please (preferably women). But that is not a bad intention either.

From a Rough Throat: Schnippedillrrrich
The partner of my widowed grandfather spent her childhood in the village of Opelischken Post Kraupischken in East Prussia. A warm-hearted woman whose work as a caregiver was even worthy of a Federal Cross of Merit. Despite her employment with the Diakonie, she fortunately behaved quite unholy in private. For example, she smoked as if she were being paid for it, and to this day I have the sound in my ear when from her roughened throat, with a delightfully rolled "r," the word "Schnippedillrrrich" emerged; that was - at least I assume - the East Prussian equivalent of the North German "Tüdelkram."

"From a rough throat" - that was my thought during the first minutes of Guerlain Homme. One must almost clear one's throat from the sour-dull scent. Seriously fuzzy lime. Less sour than bergamot, yet certainly no less rough. Guerlain itself writes on the internet (is the fragrance really discontinued?) under the section "Secrets of the Perfumer" that rhubarb has been included to support the sourness. I believe that readily; this nasty throat-scratching weed fits the present sour-dull impression perfectly.

Accompanying this is refreshing peppermint. Rum can be sensed, if one knows it. For me, it remains somewhat bodiless. I am no expert, but a decent rum surely brings a bit more flavor and volume. Tea is clearly recognizable. If I were to characterize it, it would be a lighter, unfermented variety.

For one to two hours, a light, botanically tinged freshness accompanies me. For my part, it could be geranium, but I am reminded primarily of plant green, like freshly crushed stems or leaves of... well, there are many possibilities, as the impression is hardly specific-aromatic and rather fresh-green. Presumably, this is already attributed to the house's own vetiver variant from the classic men's fragrance of the same name.

In the third hour, a dry and quickly darkening wood note takes the lead. A minimal-aquatic hint seems to be involved. Behind it lies, still - and throughout the entire fragrance development - a touch of dull acidity. Without the corresponding announcement, I would not have thought of rhubarb, but knowing this so-called secret, it fits perfectly.

After not even six hours, the intensity noticeably decreases. Fortunately, a green fresh impression remains - Guerlain has undoubtedly committed its house vetiver to this - until the very end. In skin cream strength, Guerlain Homme lasts a good one or two hours longer.

Conclusion: I do not find the fragrance as bad as it is sometimes perceived here. Perhaps, as a latecomer to the world of perfume, I simply lack that enormous expectation, reaching deep into the emotional realm, that others associate with the house of Guerlain, and thus Guerlain Homme should not be penalized with some kind of "benchmark malus" for me. For a fragrance aimed at the broader market, it is quite alright. In the extremely unlikely event that my boss - whom I suspect to be a Baldessarini fan - ever asks me for a strictly style-preserving alternative recommendation, this would be a candidate.

I thank Angelliese for the sample.

Mojito in a bottle with an earthy woody base of vetiver. Simple as that

It's true that smells to mojito. It's nice for a while, but not the most appropriate for a fragrance, imho

Nice pleasant minty alcoholic. Not really that close of a representation of mojito as I expected. However well rounded and versatile.

I actually enjoy wearing this casually at night, while socializing. It works well in the humidity of a summer night. Not always what I grab

Cool & refreshing blast of mint/lime that does resemble a mojito. Dries down into an inoffensive vetiver/woody base. Good stuff!

Caipirinha vibes without feeling boozy: lime, alcoholic notes, mint, tea, very finely tuned: it was a unique Guerlain experiment.

Herb-fresh without development and tension. Plus, it lacks depth and has a synthetic touch. Could easily be on the bottom shelf of a drugstore.
