You're my private amber (for everybody)
One of my best friends (who is not into perfumes, btw) calls Yves Rocher a "democratic brand". What he actually wants to express is the fact that YR's fragrances are widely available and that YR offers decent quality at reasonnable prices. The current YR-portfolio contains a number of pleasant fragrances and the latest scent "for men" in the line manages to live up to the reputation of its sisters and brothers with typical YR reliabilty and quality. Created by Christoph Raynaud (he of "1 Million", "My Insolence" and "Karleidoscope"), "Ambre Noir" is a medley of patchouli and vetiver, cardamon, lavender, cedarwood, violet leaves and tonka bean plus the beautiful essential oil of elemi which adds a sensuous whiff to that good old favourite called "Amber". This fragrance is not strong, but discreet, warm and refined. The woody notes bring it down to earth and the "elemi resin" adds a sense of mystery. There is something "private" about this scent, it stays on my skin for hours, but doesn't communicate with others unless they come very close. It may not immediately appeal to the pure-minded "amber-lovers", but it manages to be both warm and light, spicy and transparent. A winner.

Ambiguously gendered, in a good way
Most of the notes in Ambre Noir were familiar to me from other Yves Rocher perfumes that were made for women. Having had a surprisingly good experiment with another Yves Rocher scent for men, I decided to give this one a try to broaden my collection and suit the more masculine swings of my somewhat fluid gender identity.

While the citrus notes are usually the ones that best complement my natural skin chemistry and make the perfume work on me, in Ambre Noir it's the spicy and woody notes that do the trick. Honestly, thinking of my collection of YR women's perfumes, it reminds me of Yria. Definitely more masculine than Yria, but the similarities are oddly striking considering they were released over 10 year apart from each other. One might easily think they are the male and female version of the same series.

Though Ambre Noir makes me think of a more masculine version of Yria, I would still consider it a unisex perfume, though perhaps slightly on the masculine side. It can pass as a very spicy women's perfume aimed at a slightly older user that I am at the moment. Maybe 30+?

Nice CH Privé alternative (Or even better)
Ambre Noir is made by the pressumed same perfumer of CH Men Privé, Christophe Raynaud, and if there is an original, it is this one, i assume that when Carolina Herrera ordered the creation of Men Privé, Monsieur Raynaud based that creation upon this one.

What does it share with the Herrera frag? How does this Ambre Noir smells like?
I could pretty much explain Ambre Noir as huge leather accord with a tonka / cardamom backbone and with some of the characters of the leather such as the smoky section taken off. If you look up the notes you'll see what i mean: Resins of elemi, a labdanum tone from the amber, violet leaf (Adds up a petrol tone) spices and woods. I would put it even above the Herrera. Costs way less, the ingredients i would say are of a comparable or even better quality (The eternal natural vs synthetic ingredient fight) and most importantly, it actually smells good on my skin, unlike CH Privé. As i have mentioned earlier Privé smells like plain Coke on my skin, doesn't smell leathery or resinous at all.

Bottom line: Wait for the discounts on this and get 5 bottles of it and 5 more of Cuir Vetiver. Sexy spice and amber scent, amazing

A pretty safe amber...
I don't get any resemblance to D&G The One from this one at all (except for the cheesy bottle) as I'm not getting any fresh or spicy notes that come through.
A soft, subtle amber, where the patchouli and lavender peek through after half to one hour with hints of cedar as well. Very calming and inoffensive, but also sort of... boring? I had my bottle for a year and a half and used it maybe ten times, before selling it.
Not bad, just wasn't interesting at all IMO. Safe for most environments.

His charm cannot disguise his impotence
I received it as a Christmas gift in 2014 and didn't unpack it for almost 4 months - because I wanted to spare myself the possible disappointment. Then, as it got warmer, I decided to give it a chance.

A full spray on my inner elbow.
At first, the scent seems confused. As if the fragrance particles don't know what to do.... Released for the first time, they act really dumb, probably need to blink, look around stupidly, and get used to the daylight. This bewildered clamor lasts about 10 minutes, then they finally manage to create a scent. One that makes me hopeful.
It could become something.

It has a pull, like a dark, bitter praline, with an orange cream filling. Even though the praline itself is dark, it is just a recurring, subtle thread of scent. Nothing else is dark. On the contrary. The fragrance has the same color as its liquid in the bottle.
Time passes, I enjoy this quiet promise, sniffing at my skin again and again... We - I and the fragrance - seem to be stuck in a state of expectation. I expect it to become something. No idea what. Maybe that the particles will do something - if they can't put on a striptease, then at least loosen their hips. But maybe the fragrance is waiting for me to like it for what it already is, so it can shed its shyness? Well, okay. I approach it, my nose nudges it kindly, benevolently. That seems to give it courage and it shows me a dry, floral note. An exceedingly beautiful one. The only stupid thing is, it only shows it to me when I'm ready to cuddle. Otherwise, it practically disappears after 3 hours! What’s that supposed to mean?!
The performance ends before I even realize it has begun? It certainly seems that way!
I stand there and wonder what I should do with this perfume. Like it? Look at it offended? Give it away? Is "nice" good enough? Does all of this now justify a disappointment?

My problem with this scent is that its fragrance components are beautiful, but homeopathically dosed. If I don't bury my nose in my inner elbow, I smell it weakly, and only at the beginning.
It's annoying, yes, it's disappointing. I think it's not enough to just be nice. Why should I flirt with it and put up with its impotence? I don't need that.
It's always the same with Yves Rocher fragrances, I've written it elsewhere too: Many nice, good approaches, and poor presence and longevity! Guys, do something in the bottle, for heaven's sake! Is it about money? There are companies where you pay the same and get perfumes that last. I don't care what it costs. Make it 10 times more expensive, but good! Then I would buy it for myself. Oh, and don't lie about the name, if it's not too much to ask. The fragrances are too good to throw away, but too weak to wear. Yes, I could reapply. I do that sometimes at home. But outside, I just forget it. I don't go out to flirt, I go to do whatever, but not to think about whether my perfume still lasts.
All the Yves Rocher perfumes I own have been given to me as gifts. But somehow I can't help but look into the mouth of the beast. Maybe I'm just too ungrateful....
So, that would be it.

Smells like Bentley for men Intense if you remove the leather and rum from it. Amazing for €15. Not your typical warm amber. Fresh and light

Ambre Noir and my skin go together well. Not overpowering, bittersweet, smoky, manly, seductive, and addictive. So warm for these fall days!

sexy and perfect for winter. Woody, spicy, ambery, natural and intimate. Lacks in performance like many YR. I don't get Moustache comparison

Like pencil shavings on olibanum with distant sweetness coming from amber. Very one-dimensional and dry, doesn't inspire any emotions.

More of a 'dry amber' than a 'dark amber'. It's rather sharp and a bit boring.

Herbaceous lavender and violet on an amber-spiced base. Very pleasant and easy to like.

Like almost all Rochers for me: synthetic-meaningless: Ambroxan-dominant, citrusy, aquatic, indifferent blend, a bit of wood, weak.

On application, woody, spicy, green with a citrus twist. A lovely light all-rounder for the whole year.

The bottle is reminiscent of D&G The One, but it turned out to be related to CH Men Privé. H/S still needs a long-term test ;D

The opening has a urine note.
That fades away, leaving a sweet-spicy-woody monotony.
Uneven and annoying.
