For spring evenings... or mornings

This perfume was born the same year as me. I remember it from my teens in the early 90s, a full page ad in a magazine. I knew enough French to translate the name - In April, an evening - how poetic, inspiring... I even started to write a short story with the perfume's name as a title.

I never actually tried it until a few years ago, when I got it in a swap. I was wearing it yesterday, a sunny afternoon in late March. Hazy, sunny, springlike... warm aldehydes on a base of almost smoky cedar wood and a sweet bouquet of freesia, iris and rose. The freesia makes it slightly sweeter than many other of its genre. Oakmoss gives it a cool freshness, like a breeze in the air and soft, blue shadows growing in the sunset. Shifting notes, warm and cool at the same time, just like the weather in spring. The name is well chosen.

Both the bottle and the scent are very 70s style, the elegant side of the decade. Very feminine, and not dated at all. High quality all the way, and just as wearable today. The aldehydic, floral-woody chypres are not my top favourites in general, but En avril is among the best that I have tried within the group.

What a Chypre***!! It's absolutely moth-proof.

I just received my fragrance package from the swap.
I opened it and saw a beautiful, simple bottle.
And I first examined the scent inside. Bright golden, shimmering and enticing.
What I then smelled thrilled me. A "noble chypre" of a special kind.
Fresh wind from "above," unsweetened flowers from the "middle," and "powdery moss wood" from "below." And all of it almost simultaneously, with just a slight delay.
And it has undertones. Sometimes clouds gather with a brief shower, and it smells of fresh green and moss. Then again, sunshine and flowers, and soon a forest aroma that has depth.
This is nothing new for a fragrance.
In this case, however, it's something "new old," as the bottle and its contents are about 40 years old, and its aroma is still wonderful. A "living witness" from another time.
And if I may say so, without having felt its "bite."
And absolutely "moth-proof" like an impregnated fabric.
Stored dark and cool, filled with a spray pump from time to time, it will last another 40 years (if it hasn't already run out).
This "Evening in April" has exactly the attributes that I so appreciate in fragrances (almost always old ones): character, longevity, the original ingredients, and plenty of imagination....

The year is still young:
As young as the couple holding hands, strolling through this avenue, carrying all hope within them.
The year is still curious:
As curious as the woman and the man, both no longer quite young, who happened to strike up a conversation in a café.
They stroll through this avenue because they do not yet want to say "goodbye."
They, as curious as he - both curious about each other; and as cautious as the spring flowers just lifting their heads.

"En Avril un Soir" by Yves Rocher tells of early spring; the evenings are still not completely free of chill. A light jacket is still appropriate.
"En Avril un Soir" carries the promise, the assurance within: It will be!

Thus, this fragrance already shines at the first encounter.
Well, Ylang-Ylang makes it easy for it!
But the radiant aldehydes, the slightly dampening bergamot, and the tender-warm smile of the orange blossoms pave the way for its sparkle!
Without their company, Ylang-Ylang's radiance here would be without a resonating body, without a mirror.
They all look forward to the arrival of the strong scent of freesia.
(How homely and friendly even the dreariest room becomes with a small bouquet of freesias!).
A few twigs of white jasmine from our avenue deepen this scent symphony long before the proud rose makes her entrance.
She steps in - she is here!
But that does not mean that all the other beauties here merely form her cachet.
Head and heart blend into a harmonious whole this April!
"En Avril un Soir" contains promises, sensual assurance, and promises warmth.
The green heavy depth of oak moss grounds the fragrant floral spirits; without this, they would flutter away like butterflies.
Iris, a somewhat delicate being in connection with jasmine, is here protected and embraced by sandalwood and patchouli.
A warm hint of musk also joins them.
The spiciness of cedar gives "En Soir en Avril" its deep longing!
A longing that accompanies all seekers; which may ultimately culminate in finding, trust, and also in sensuality!

Thus, "En Avril un Soir" is still for me a singular declaration of love for the young spring, young love, and the mystery that we all would so gladly like to track down!

This fresh yet somehow powdery-sensual fragrance is a faithful companion.
Not for the duration of an entire day; one must occasionally reapply from the pleasing glass bottle.
Just for the pleasure of rediscovering this fragrant being.
But for that, "En Avril un Soir" whispers and softly murmurs through a romantic spring evening.

Sometimes, when I think of the time with this seemingly simple yet so intricately composed fragrance, I discover a long-forgotten longing within me!
A longing that has not yet been overshadowed by experience, by knowledge.
Thus, "En Avril un Soir" preserves the virginity of spring and the budding allure of the approaching summer in its bottle.
It makes me believe again - at least a little bit - in miracles!

Gentle Chypre

Once again, one of the "cornerstones" of my collection! Probably bought in the late 80s from the online shop, like all of this company's fragrances back then. This scent spent many years in the shadows of my collection... I just couldn't really relate to the fragrance family "Chypre" (under which it was also offered at YR)! In my younger years, I was a declared fan of floral scents. However, I didn't find it unpleasant; it was just hard for me to categorize it - not distinctly floral, not fresh, not fruity, not oriental, not sweet... so what is it then? Today, I know more about the individual fragrance families, but Chypres are still not my outright favorites, although I do appreciate some as a change of pace. I think it has to do with the oak moss, which I sometimes perceive as "scratchy," slightly piercing, or even headache-inducing in excess. In hindsight, it probably also explains why some classics from the 70s seemed rather off-putting to me as a child.

However, I must say that EAuS is a very agreeable representative of the Chypre family! The oak moss here is not piercing in the slightest. The scent is unobtrusive, slightly woody, and very lightly powdery. Although the name suggests an evening perfume, I perceive it as a distinct "day scent," an all-rounder for work, leisure, and sports; it would just be too subtle and unspectacular for going out. But it fits well for spring or specifically in April!
I still have an old splash bottle - with a large opening. Even though I feel like I've almost bathed my wrists in the perfume, I don't feel over-perfumed. Overdosing is hardly possible with this scent...

Very gentle, calm, and intelligent.

It belongs to the group of Chypre-floral.
I have a very old bottle without a spray.
And of course, real oak moss is included in the perfume.
Therefore, the comparison with modern chemical products is very interesting.
The aroma is somewhat softer.
It is truly spring when there is not much foliage yet, but the wood (Virginia cedar, sandalwood), the moss, and the flowers (African orange blossom, jasmine, freesia, and iris!) are very well pronounced.
After a few hours: The aroma became beautifully classic, in the spirit of Clima Lancôme.
