Sea and Salt and Sweat Mingling Peacefully Under the Sun
Comptoir Sud Pacifique AQUA MOTU is a rather odd fragrance. Yes, it smells somewhat like seawater at the beach, mingling with sand. But it also smells like the plants that wash up on the shore, the green vines and leaves of underwater foliage.

The opening seems to have an extra note, similar in some ways to...well, to be honest, it smells not unlike masculine sweat, with just a touch of sourness. Fortunately, the opening fades fast, and the drydown is entirely inoffensive and even agreeable. In fact, it reminds me just a bit of BOIS FARINE.

I think that, all and all, AQUA MOTU is just okay. I bought a 50ml bottle blind, and before swapping it away, I wore it a few times, while sitting on my deck on days when the warm wind was swirling about. I'd look at all of the trees and listen to the birds and imagine that I was in Jamaica or Barbados or Puerto Rico or Trinidad or Cozumel or somewhere else where sea and salt and sweat all mingle together peacefully under the sun.

Salty sea smell
Truly an oceanic scent. Not a beachy scent, not a tropical scent, an oceanic scent. Sea breeze and salt and sand, very light and summery and unisex. I do enjoy aquatic scents but this one ended up being not quite what I wanted. I've learned that I prefer aquatic scents that have a little of something else going on too, whether that be florals or woods or what have you. This particular fragrance also dried down to a very basic, cheap cologne scent on me, losing a lot of the pleasant and unique atmospheric qualities it had in the first thirty minutes. For a straightforward aquatic scent with no frills, this is an excellent option, but it's not to my taste.

Commissioner Olfattke Takes a Break
First Chapter - By the Sea

“What are you doing?”

Bertram Olfattke flinched. The voice had pulled him from distant memories of vacations in the mountains. He looked up and saw a boy of perhaps eight years standing next to the bench, a dark blue children's bicycle between his legs. Behind him, a slightly younger girl peered over, clutching the handle of a scooter and pushing it back and forth with her right foot - as if she wasn't sure whether to flee at any moment. However, the two didn't seem to be afraid; rather, Olfattke had the impression that he had become an involuntary object of some kind of bravery test.

It would be no surprise if they had chosen him for that. He must have looked rather eccentric, sitting there in his faded jacket in the sun while beachgoers strolled along the promenade in light, summery clothing.

“What are you doing?” the boy repeated his question, and the girl, now apparently convinced that there was no immediate danger, moved closer.

“I’m sniffing. After all, I’m a sniffer.”

That was true. Both. Although the wordplay was, of course, unfair. In fact, he was in the process of testing a fragrance. He had found it fitting to take along two samples of sea scents. They would have to face direct comparison with the Baltic Sea. At least it was useful that the police psychologist had forced him into this vacation. She had been working on him for months...

At least with today’s concoction, there wasn’t much sea-like going on. The stuff had hit him with a warm-sweet-pungent opening, close to a baking aroma’s overly sweet poke. The cloying floral note of lily of the valley unfortunately fit all too well. Quickly, a diffuse sea note followed, which, combined with the sweetness, could at best recreate a psychedelic sunbath on a soft-focus beach. The supposedly included straw flower was either heroic or a played joke. With a lot of goodwill, one could think of something like spicy hay. Alpine meadow hay, like back in Berchtesgaden, vacations with his parents. More than half a century had passed since then, as he had just calculated with a frown. Goodness… And in this contemplation, the boy had burst in with his question.

With difficulty, Olfattke managed to remain serious as he saw two pairs of eyes suddenly grow wider. Behind them, a head cinema was surely running in the style of an absurd play on the theme of “sniffer.” However, his secret joy quickly gave way to another, foreign feeling. He was surprised to find that he found the children's innocent curiosity sympathetic. Trust-inspiring.

“I’m a police officer. With the criminal police. And we are sometimes called sniffers. But that has nothing to do with sniffing just now. I’m testing a perfume.”

The eyes possibly grew even larger. If so, then so be it, Olfattke thought, rummaging for a business card, spraying it briefly, and holding it out to the two. They sniffed cautiously - and wrinkled their lips. Aha, a case of ‘out of the mouths of babes’ the commissioner cheerfully noted, took the card back, and tossed it into a trash can.

Several seconds of tense silence passed before it dawned on him that merely referring to a strange hobby could not quench their childish thirst for knowledge.

Right.

“Do you catch criminals?” the girl blurted out.

“Yes. Just not right now. I’m on vacation.”

“And why aren’t you going to the beach? Everyone is going to the beach!”

Olfattke hesitated with his answer. But why not?

“Actually, I don’t particularly like the beach. A doctor said I should come here. Some time ago, a colleague of mine… died. And that wouldn’t have happened if we had arrested the… criminal right away. That’s not a nice memory.”

Half an hour and many, many questions and gentle explanations later, he watched as Jan and Lena zigzagged in daring slalom through the pedestrians on their way home to make it in time for lunch.

That day, the commissioner sat quietly on his bench for a long time, deep in thought. He only casually followed how a brackish, artificial wood-like quality gradually transformed his test candidate into a pleasure as well as harmless diffuse-sweet-creamy, algae-floral mixture. If that was the scent of the South Pacific: No one needed to fly halfway around the world for that.

Finally, he got up, a bit stiff in the back, and made his way to his small guesthouse. The prospect of the fussy, clucking chatter of the innkeeper made him inwardly sigh. He would retire to his room early and read until deep into the night.

Sea monsters rise from the ocean and take over the Earth!
Ugh, I haven't smelled such a penetrating, disgusting, eerie stinker in a long time. It's not boring or weak; it stinks, and I don't want to smell that. The most repulsive ocean scent I've encountered so far. A mix of sand, sea salt, and algae with a hint of cinnamon and sweetness... Yuck!

The scent is also not exactly weak, with a strong longevity of 10 hours being noteworthy. However, if you find the scent, like I do, to be eerily goosebump-inducing in a negative sense, then that's more of a disadvantage. The sillage was still good even after washing it off, which was annoying for me as well. The bottle looks cheap, just like the scent.

Such scents that truly smell bad, sometimes even evoking thoughts of vomit, are really rare. Uninspired or copied fragrances tend to get quite low ratings, but they are bearable. This one is not for any normally functioning nose!

Ocean breezes can smell so good and naturally fresh, but here it makes you feel nauseous, and you think you're standing in front of a sewer exit in a big city.

It smelled no better on my girlfriend, so it can't be the male skin that's the issue. A no-go for both genders, and it's a wonder that there are still quite a few owners!

Nauseating, and please make a wide detour around this perfume and its wearer.

Summer Vibes in the Baltic Sea Resort
I sprayed this sample on myself last night before going to bed.

What can I say: a beautiful light unisex summer fragrance.

The top note is fresh and slightly floral. The top note reminds me a bit of Rem pour Homme by Reminiscence, just in an aquatic version.

This fragrance from CSP is also rather subtle and well-suited for summer.

After 15 minutes, the floral aspect fades and the scent increasingly develops its maritime character. It becomes a bit spicier, but the freshness remains intact. The beach feeling sets in immediately. I compare the feeling more to the Baltic Sea beach rather than the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

AM did not become particularly seaweed-like on my skin. It remained pleasantly fresh and spicy until the end.

AM lacks what most aquatic fragrances often have, the fresh men's deodorant accord. In this execution, I find an aquatic fragrance wearable for me.

It's a pity that this fragrance is so light. In a more intense version, I would buy it immediately.

Swollen wood, brackish water, boats rocking in the gentle waves. Metallic and rough. Later, a hint of sweetness appears. Good.

Lightly sweet resinous-vanilla accompanied by seawater. Fresh. Salt & algae are softly cushioned. Autumn-dry sand in the base. Unique.

Sand, salt, a bit of seaweed, and a hint of floral. Less a scent than the feeling of sitting in absolute silence on warm sand by the sea.

Initially nice, aquatic, lightly citrusy - but fades quickly. A hint of "woody banana" lingers, smells similar to dough.

Just a hint of fragrance.
Opening like strong alcoholic mosquito spray.
Hardly any development.
Each spray is a fresh breeze.

Sweet, papery sandalwood paste, I don't like immortelle, aquatic + coconut and vanilla. Not for my father's daughter.
