Hay, chocolate, raisin, resinous mostly-gourmand
Sampling Pineward Perfumes Hayride, a late 2022 release, a dark, gourmand-leaning composition from the line, only slightly woody, partly resinous, somewhat spicy, with a healthy rich blend featuring hay, chocolate, raisin, cardamom, tonka, and oakmoss. Such an interesting blend right off the bat, and to make my usual Slumberhouse comparisons, somewhere between the pepper cacao of Ore and the stewed fruits and resins of Baque. This is also vaguely reminiscent of some other entries within the Pineward line but this, to my recollection, has a darker character overall than most of the gourmand-leaning entries, with excellent performance, like Gristmill, which I sampled yesterday.

Like the rest of the line, Hayride is sold via the house website at bottle prices of $205/135/80 for 57/37/17ml, so by no means cheap, but very much on par with other high-quality, high-performing niche entries. I simply have the problem of loving too many of the house’s scents to choose, and I’m overdue to retry many of them.

The woodiest gourmand ever?
A dark chocolate, one of those hard to chew, eaten secretly in a corner of a barn, a damp corner in which the wood of the walls has swollen enough to peel off the external paint and bring back out the smell of the finish.
As it evolves, this fragrance loses much of its sweeter aspect and brings out a lot of its woody character, which, however, remains soft and mixes with the smell of hay, without overpowering it.
The woodiest gourmand I've ever smelled. Wish listed.

The Better Hay Scent
This is a heavy hay scent, not light like other typical hay and grass scents. This is like bees built their hive in a hay bale while the smell of baked goods and cocoa drift through the air. There isn't any honey or beeswax notes listed so the sweetness must be coming from the sweet grass and raisin notes, and its thick like syrup. I've recently tried Hayloft and I have to say that if you are looking for a hay scent, this is the better fragrance but its still a little too gourmand. I would also say that with how heavy it is, it probably only good for Autumn and Winter, you wouldn't want this scent to being hot and cloying in the summer.

The projection was fairly strong, it will be too strong on a hot say. So wear sparingly or during cooler days. It lasted about 6 hours on my skin. There are various sizes and prices available, starting at 4ml for $20, 17ml for $80, 37ml for $135, and 57ml for $205.

aromatic loaf of sweet bread
This opens with a slightly boozy aroma coming from the raisins, like you can smell the fermentation of the grapes. The hay is also very strong, it’s aromatic, green, and earthy. The heart of this gets more bready and sweet with an acorn nut bread note and a warm blend of nutmeg, cocoa and cardamom. It smells like a loaf of spiced raisin bread with a hint of vanilla. The green accords in this keep it from being too gourmand though, this is very earthy. There’s a creamy tonka bean and a prominent oakmoss in the drydown with remnants of that raisin, hay, and slightly sweet breadiness. This scent is really complex and so intoxicating to smell.

The Glimmer at the End of Summer
Silver dust of ethereal flowers flies, tiny pearls of honey droplets shimmer on stems of sweet-spicy copper hues, moist fibers of green herbs seem to flow everywhere into the summer sky. The air tastes like warm bread crust crumbs. Your eyes brush the feed in the barn like fingers through the withered meadows, painting golden-soft waves in brittle ears, and there are still raisins blooming in the coumarin. Fine threads of bitter resins grow from the forest to the hay wagon, wafting over the dry meadows and rising over the peaty grounds into the dark vanilla clouds that are growing on the horizon. Chamomiles still shimmer in the late sand, bitter cocoa dusts in the warm wind, soon autumn will sweep across the land.

Nicholas Nilsson of Pineward Perfumes based in Utah originally dedicated himself to the scents of North American primeval forests before he recently expanded the horizon of his creations, taking various new directions. In his alcohol-based perfumes, he primarily uses highly concentrated absolutes. Most of his fragrances are explicitly not produced in limited quantities, as he does not want to create purchasing pressure or hype around his brand. However, in my opinion, the sheer volume of recent releases has been less beneficial to the sophistication of many of his current works.
"Hayride" is, on the other hand, a true hit that revisits the hay-peat theme of the early "Steading," largely foregoing the smoky-malty notes in favor of various hay aromas. It has created an almost photorealistic image of fresh, gold-green hay, which is fragrant and dusty as it is harvested in the fields of late summer. The typical coumarin notes found in hay, rye, and sweet grasses are always at the center, shifting from warm-spicy to green-grassy in all facets. At the top, these are underscored by ethereal-floral-fruity aromas of cardamom, which, along with the resinous-sweet notes of spikenard, creates the impression of chamomile. It is the spikenard that, in the heart, with woody herbal spice, brings the hay wagon close to a dry forest. Bread crust, raisins, and nutmeg support the impression of golden-yellow hay. Tonka, dark vanilla, and bitter cocoa provide more warmth and depth, but always remain in the background, creating with the woody-smoky nuances of spikenard, the earthy facets of the mosses with the hay towards the end the impression of dry peat soil. The end of summer shimmers moderately for a good eight hours.

Cocoa grass and hay. Not much to it although it does give a somewhat contemplative sunny country style view/feel.

Fruity hay, the raisins remind me of plums, subtle hints of chamomile, nuanced use of green notes. Not my thing but good!

A journey back to Carinthia on a freshly mown wildflower meadow. We kids are frolicking in the sweet hay. The braids are flying. So authentic. Great!
