Fresh fruits thru the pines
This is without a doubt the least dark scent within anything this house has released to date.
It is fruity but not sweet like most of the fragrances from this house, but rather interesting and woody. I find it very sophisticated and original, it can be seductive and elegant at the same time.
I would say that it is the most versatile for situations and times of the year as well.
Unfortunately its projection is very low and also its duration.
In that sense I would say that he is the laziest in the house along with Velvetine.
If that's not a problem for you, it's probably one of Pineward's most interesting perfumes to wear, as it's the most wearable and easy to like in my opinion. It's not so much a peculiar olfactory experience as the rest.

Inspiration and Name Don't Match the Smell
Pineward uses words like glacier, ice, and waves as their inspiration for this scent. I would say that is a bit of an exaggeration. When I first used the scent, I got the pine but instead of citrus I smelled more of a cool cucumber. So this scent did give me a "cooling" effect at the beginning but it did not last long. It was lightly sweet following that. Then for the dry down it was a light wood with a soap scent in the background. The scent only lasted about 3 hours on my skin, so not great longevity. Its nice but with a name like Icefall and using glaciers for inspiration, I expected something that would give me chills.

Fresh, marine, woody alternative to most of the house's darker stuff
Sampling Icefall, one of the more recent releases from Pineward Perfumes, and notable in its lighter/brighter juice color, relative to the generally-dark shades of reddish brown that comprise most of the house’s offerings.

Icefall, as expected, is a bit fresher, still a familiar mix of woody notes but with some citrus, as well. The full note list is white grapefruit, blue cypress, maritime pine, juniper, nootka, cedar, sandalwood, and seaweed. So in addition to freshness, there is marine quality to it as well. So it’s fresh, woody in a pine/spruce sort of way, and a bit marine, very agreeable, mainly with the “icy” sharpness in the brief opening before drying down to something more pleasant and agreeable.

Performance is modest, and while the scent is fairly inventive, without being the dark, robust, super-strong juice of most of the house’s other releasing, the standard pricing ($220/128/80 for 57/37/17ml) seems a bit more difficult to justify, but it’s nice that the house has Icefall in its catalogue, very much in contrast to the rest of the line.

My dear Icefall, I would
really like to say something nice about you, good thing I didn't read your ingredients in your resume first, so I'm completely unbiased. You are quite an eccentric character, the first impression... well, I hope it's misleading, celery and Maggi herb are your companions. Ah, your name, it's just perfect for hot days, I thought you would cool me down, at least you have an icy character on the outside. Not at all, you are a bit cabbage soup-scented, warming, but take it easy, I'm patient, maybe you're just shy and hiding behind vegetable buddies. Slowly you become calmer, gentler, looking at me kindly, the vegetable herbs turn medicinal, with a pleasant sweetness - just like making gargle solutions tasty for the little ones. And it seems you work in carpentry, you have something woody about you, which I like, it distracts a bit from the cabbage soup. And it feels like I've known you for a while, do you have a brother? Let me check my list, ah, there he is, Kythnos, is he family of yours? Oh no, well then... let's keep it short, you are not my type, I'm sorry, there's not going to be a second date.

It ends in the icy herb forest, right by the frozen lake
Even though I already really like the Pineward scents, I was quite skeptical and a bit biased when reading the fragrance pyramid for Icefall.
I’m not particularly fond of fresh scents, even less of fruity ones, and least of all of citrus notes in fragrances or fragrances in general.
Of course, I still wanted to test it.

And I was quite surprised and somehow taken with it during the test.
I found it primarily interesting to totally quirky.
And at the start, grapefruit hits you hard.
I will get to that in the description further down.
The sample was now empty, and the scent wouldn’t leave my mind.
In short: the bottle has now moved in with me.
And, as it often is with good friendships: despite the initial sympathy, we took a while to really get to know each other. Now it’s finally there and solidified, the sense of belonging.

Having mentioned that the name is great and somehow fits like a glove, I’ll attempt to describe the scent.

Icefall opens with a surge of a mix of juicy and icy cold, almost frozen grapefruit. Totally authentic, bitter-sweet fruity and invigorating.
Alongside somewhat sharp-herbaceous essences in the background, the grapefruit note clearly dominates the first few minutes on my skin. It eventually balances out so that the peppery herbs push forward. The point at which the scent somehow gains another layer of quirkiness. But from here on, it also becomes really interesting.

And from this point on, I’m glad that the grapefruit is now somehow well embedded in its surroundings, making it primarily interesting rather than annoying.
Due to my aversion to fruits in fragrances, this was my concern with Icefall.

After the midsection just described, the grapefruit is completely infused with spicy-peppery herbal juices and a light, cold mist. There’s also something woody that is indeed meant to be both “woody” and in reference to Euphorium Brooklyn’s WALD.
Until the end of the fragrance development, the hint of a long-lost memory of a frozen grapefruit gently flashes through now and then. So subtle that you can hardly notice it.

The drydown impresses on my skin with a nuance that was missing until then, namely one that is very close to the basil note from Vert D’encens. I simply suspect that this is due to the interplay with the other nuances and is somewhat in the direction of seaweed. Moreover, the “basil” here also appears significantly wetter and cooler. This lays, for me quite dominantly like a blanket over the remaining almost (Maruyama-) spicy ice-herb forest.
And it is exactly here, at the end of the fragrance journey, that I find the true and previously hidden strength of Icefall.

A journey that begins with peppery-fresh winter grapefruit and ends in the icy herb forest, right by the frozen lake.

Fresh, balsamic... an icy "kick."
The color perfectly reflects the green sensation, and the presence of the kelp gives a salty undertone.

A rather dry and smooth spicy-woody Mid season fragrance, balanced by a slightly salty and fresh citric spicy-green opening. Very versatile.

Bitter grapefruit, mostly peel, oceanic kelp and cooling juniper and cypress. It's not as refreshing as the name would let on, but it's wet

Very green and bright resinous. Salty aquatic notes from seaweed. A subtle hint of citrus: quirky and unique.

For me, this falls under the category of "aromatherapy". Subtle, monotonous cypress scent. Nothing more happens for my nose. Niche....
