Celebrate life
Judging by the name I was expecting a dark, earthy, emo type of perfume. I ordered a bunch of small decants of this brand with an exception for Funerie, of which I wanted a larger decant. Not that I’m a emu type of guy but hey we’re heading to autumn, Halloween around the corner I thought it’d be fitting.

A lot of these Pineward frags were pretty fun to wear. Some really reminded me of trees or soil. But not this one. I couldn’t detect any of the green notes that are listed. Instead, it reminded me a bit of Christmas cookie spices. That might sound a bit corny and standard but subtle hints of dry tobacco and leathery notes and a smokey frankincense make this really stand out. If you’re familiar with Luxor you know what I mean. Just take out the fresher tea note and replace it with something darker like dark chocolate or coffee. I’m really surprised at how good this smells!

Does it fit the autumnal season? Absolutely. It doesn’t scare anyone though, au contraire. It’s a versatile beauty that can be worn in any occasion. It lasted me around 7/8 hours until it became really intimate.

This was ultimately my favorite Pineward, glad it was my largest decant.

A perfume called Death
A study in Decay. "Death" would have been another aptly chosen name for this composition. What Nick managed to pull off with this one is incredible. A perfume so dark, primitive, and challenging that yet manages to stay poised throughout the wear, mysterious, sexy, and even inviting. It feels like a script from Edgar Allan Poe, a Danse Macabre, not just a mindless puddle of concentrated and unusual raw materials. It is compelling. It opens up with a powerful Morel Mushroom note, meaty, organic, and earthy. Shortly after, the rest of the notes start to unveil. The scent evolves as a whole, rather than showing a classical progression. Accords like rose, leather, frankincense, agarwood, and myrrh interplay like being inside a whirlwind. At times, some of them unveil more than others, and they go back and forth like that. However, the main players, to my nose, are always the mushroom, the leather, and the resins. Therefore, it smells, for the most part, like a centuries-old leather garment that has been dragged through soil, and infused with the smoke of burning resins. The rose pops in and out, withered, lifeless. The oud and the cedar play together to create a woody accord in which the oud dominates. I feel that the mushroom and the oud work beautifully together, as the yeasty facets in these complement each other. The mushroom note dominates throughout the wear, imbuing an organic feel to the composition. A unique perfume. A rite of death celebrating nature's decay, and the dead have exquisite taste. I think Treacle just got dethroned for my favorite Pineward perfume.

Review based on the original formula, yellow juice. The new one differs greatly, unfortunately.

Death and decay in the most beautiful way
I can't really improve upon DrB's review so I won't even try.

I concur with his words though - Funerie OG is a masterclass in perfumery. Absolutely mesmerising in it's austere beauty. You want rotten, musty wood and all of the new growths associated? That's exactly what you get here but bolstered by the beauty of rose and frankincense.

The newer version removes the most captivating note - Morel Mushroom. Understandably, though, as it was also it's most polarising aspect. As a result, the newer version is a much more easy and linear affair and, sadly, doesn't compare at all. It's more "perfumey" if that makes sense.

I have not tried the reproduced Funerie '22 version but hope that it is, if not an exact replica of the OG, close enough so as to fill the massive gap which was left by it.

Smells like Death
Have y'all watched Hannibal the TV series? In season 1 episode 2, "Amuse-Bouche", the team finds bodies that were buried alive with mushrooms intentionally grown from them. This is what I imagine that crime scene smelling like. This scent starts with a strong funky scent, a dark earthy humid scent that must be the moral mushroom. After the funk I got an animalic leather, like a sweaty horse or animals in the barn type of smell. The animal fades into a more traditional leather but with a smokey background, like a firepit newly put out but still smoldering a little bit. I personally did not get the rose scent, I wish I had because it would have made this a little more wearable to me. This is a scent few will love but it is interesting. The projection and longevity lasted all day.

Church in the misty hillside
You're invited to the funeral of a distant relative. It's cloudy and grey when you arrive at the location your phone brought you to.
The church's old exterior is discoloured and the wood has warped. Moss has begun making a home within the grooves, well watered by the mist.
Inside, it's no brighter. The dark wood of the pews seems to suck all the candlelight away. The rose bouquets are already drying out, suffocating in the smoke of insence that doesn't quite drown out the musty smell of decay.
Nobody else is there but the priest. He smiles at you. His teeth are too sharp.

A sweet rose. Damp soil. Spiritual smoke. It’s a dream out loud.

It's not for everyone, but it fills my goth heart with joy. A lovely dirty gloomy damp smoky forest in decay. 10's across the board!

A smoky leathery in the opening. Then a green/resinous/woody note of cedar and conifer emerges that reminds me quite a bit to Amber Kiso.

Opens with a blast of moist earth + mushroom, but dries down to a relatively inoffensive dark, slightly spiced amber.

Extremely realistic mushroom like smell, combined with a beautiful rose. Hard to pull out though.

Initially smoky earthy-spicy and musty, a warm and resinous, spicy leathery-woody Winter fragrance, on a dry and dusty resinous-woody base.

Dry dead rose petals. A leather book, left cracked open. Incense smoke and tobacco leaf. Slightly fungal. Strange but wearable.

Distinctive morel scent, subtly animalistic with oud and leather; floral note, smoke, and accompanying wood on a balsamic base.
