Smells like Death
Have y'all watched Hannibal the TV series? In season 1 episode 2, "Amuse-Bouche", the team finds bodies that were buried alive with mushrooms intentionally grown from them. This is what I imagine that crime scene smelling like. This scent starts with a strong funky scent, a dark earthy humid scent that must be the moral mushroom. After the funk I got an animalic leather, like a sweaty horse or animals in the barn type of smell. The animal fades into a more traditional leather but with a smokey background, like a firepit newly put out but still smoldering a little bit. I personally did not get the rose scent, I wish I had because it would have made this a little more wearable to me. This is a scent few will love but it is interesting. The projection and longevity lasted all day.

A perfume called Death
A study in Decay. "Death" would have been another aptly chosen name for this composition. What Nick managed to pull off with this one is incredible. A perfume so dark, primitive, and challenging that yet manages to stay poised throughout the wear, mysterious, sexy, and even inviting. It feels like a script from Edgar Allan Poe, a Danse Macabre, not just a mindless puddle of concentrated and unusual raw materials. It is compelling. It opens up with a powerful Morel Mushroom note, meaty, organic, and earthy. Shortly after, the rest of the notes start to unveil. The scent evolves as a whole, rather than showing a classical progression. Accords like rose, leather, frankincense, agarwood, and myrrh interplay like being inside a whirlwind. At times, some of them unveil more than others, and they go back and forth like that. However, the main players, to my nose, are always the mushroom, the leather, and the resins. Therefore, it smells, for the most part, like a centuries-old leather garment that has been dragged through soil, and infused with the smoke of burning resins. The rose pops in and out, withered, lifeless. The oud and the cedar play together to create a woody accord in which the oud dominates. I feel that the mushroom and the oud work beautifully together, as the yeasty facets in these complement each other. The mushroom note dominates throughout the wear, imbuing an organic feel to the composition. A unique perfume. A rite of death celebrating nature's decay, and the dead have exquisite taste. I think Treacle just got dethroned for my favorite Pineward perfume.

Review based on the original formula, yellow juice. The new one differs greatly, unfortunately.

Hard to wear and challenging
I find Funerie being the most daring and provocative scent from Pineward lineup.

It opens up with a weird, mold-like Morel mushroom note mixed with mold and funky rose. It dries down to black, strong leather and that's basically what this fragrance is all about. There are some other nuances like smoke, tobacco but definitely it's leather based and leather centric. There is some rose note detectable in here, but as it says in the description, it is a rotten, decayed rose. The scent itself is very organic.

Longevity is over 10 hours, sillage is over moderate.

IMO it's an unique gem. Unwearable, yes, but still a gem.

Dark, resinous, woody, rosy blend
Sampling Pineward Perfumes Funerie, a 2022 release that is a resinous, woody, and rosy mix. Rose, leather, tobacco, smoke, incense, myrrh are all in the mix per the note breakdown, and it definitely has that well-blended, well-rounded feel wherein most notes do not overshadow others, the exception for me being the rose, which I tend to smell prominently.

It immediately smells to me like something midway between D.S. Durga’s Amber Kiso and (from their discontinued HYLNDS collection) Bitter Rose, Broken Spear. So, smoky, leathery, amber meets a metallic, spicy rose, minus the metal, in the case of Funerie.

The performance is quite strong and the blend is compounded at 31%, essentially an extrait de parfum. This smells like it has a good amount of natural materials, as well—a common trait of this house.

The pricing for Funerie is similar to most of the line, at $205/135/80 for 57/37/17ml, reasonable for how rich and dense the juice is, and fortunately, samples are available, both individually and as part of sets (in general).

I’d certainly recommend that others check out Funerie in particular and Pineward generally, especially for the cool weather, as it’s currently winter in my neck of the woods.

A smoky leathery in the opening. Then a green/resinous/woody note of cedar and conifer emerges that reminds me quite a bit to Amber Kiso.

Initially smoky earthy-spicy and musty, a warm and resinous, spicy leathery-woody Winter fragrance, on a dry and dusty resinous-woody base.
