Aquatic Most Rare

This is a very unique marine fragrance. It’s a tall order to replicate the literary vibe of an elusive & highly vaunted beast of the sea.

White Whale doesn’t smack you with the force of the ocean’s white caps; rather muffled, muted laps against the hull…a calm before the storm.

One would expect ambergris to make an appearance- and it does- and to an exquisite extent. Something magical happens when it’s brought together with the osmanthus and violet and grounded beautifully with a light touch of patchouli and laudanum. The top peppery accord is relatively fleeting, which, though super pleasant, isn’t the full flavor of this fragrance.

There’s a softness in this that is very cosy withought feeling cloying, and the sillage is mild and the lasting strength is moderate.

This is absolutely full-bottle worthy for me, and I’m not ordinarily drawn to aquatic scents.

White Whale is close to phenomenal, and is aptly deserving of its namesake.

Salty Marine Iris and Violets

Captain Ahab would be proud to douse himself in this while going on the hunt for... (fill in the blank). A perfectly unisex marine scent that is like a saltier version of that other Masque Milano fragrance that captured my heart, I-IV Times Square. When I sprayed on White Whale, for a few seconds, while the frankincense and osmanthus sweetened the air, I thought I had mistakenly applied the Times Square sample. Had to recheck the label and couldn't believe my eyes. So I tested both side by side and they are very similar; they both feature osmanthus and iris, but when the heart notes bloom, they begin to diverge. I-IV Times Square remains pungently cosmetic and lipsticky-sweet, while IV-IV White Whale goes the salty-ambergris route. Both fragrances are gorgeous and well balanced, but IV-IV White Whale is more a summer perfume.

Lovely composition

Opening is very interesting, smells like brine-y ocean salt, like you’d imagine a salt crusted boat to smell like. It’s almost as if you can smell the salt from the ocean via a breeze, travelled through the air. Not sure how to describe it honestly. It is somewhat harsh at the opening. As it got to the heart, the osmanthus and violet started coming through, made it smell less harsh, and more airy and floral. The fragrance smoothed out quite a lot as it went through the heart and into the base of the dry down, probably due to the ambergris note.
Definitely a fascinating take on aquatics!
