Funny! Moschino 2007

The folks at Moschino evidently can appreciate a good citrus-floral-woody fragrance, as they have a few of them. FUNNY! is probably the highest quality of the group, with I LOVE LOVE and HIPPY FIZZ trailing slightly behind. I have not tried the made-for-men Moschino citrus, but I probably should since they obviously know what they're doing!

FUNNY strikes a balance between the super-orangey I LOVE LOVE and the synthetic fruity floral with a citrus opening in HIPPY FIZZ. It seems that the quality-level of a given set of Moschino fragrances is intended to be similar. So FUNNY! which comes in the same bottle and style as COUTURE, is more sophisticated than the Cheap and Chic launches, as I suppose the name would imply...

To my nose FUNNY! occupies the same olfactory neighborhood as Fresh CITRON DE VIGNE. There is a super bright and almost sharp opening. It subsides a bit, but this fragrance remains very citrusy--much more citrusy than floral throughout the duration of a wear. Yes, there is florality, but it's more like an embellishment than a focus. The woods in the background seem more cedarish than anything else, and everything is held together nicely with a substantial clean musk base. I cannot say that I really smell much amber here.

FUNNY! is an excellent summertime fragrance and smells more natural than HIPPY FIZZ. The abstract white noise quality of SSRI fragrances (a group which includes HIPPY FIZZ) is absent here, so this fragrance will work for nearly anyone looking for a citrus-floral-woody effect. Because of the citrus-blast opening, this is definitely a citrus-lovers only composition. I find it to be more lemony than orangey, although not as dramatically as in Annick Goutal EAU D'HADRIEN.

This fragrance evokes memories of Italy during the summer or early fall. Good to wear if you could use a vacation to the Mediterranean but cannot for some reason break away. I have also used this fragrance to counteract seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in wintertime. (-;

I bought Funny! six months ago when I was shopping with a group of friends without testing it first. I'm very glad now that I did. Originally I bought Funny! because I loved the cute little bottle, but after some time the fragrance grew on me, and now I absolutely adore this fragrance.

I really love this perfume because for once I can really smell the difference between the top, middle and base notes. Funny! starts out really fruity for the first hour, then eventually it mellows into a delightful floral where you can definitely smell the peony, jasmine, green tea and violet. The middle notes last for ages, and when the perfume finally starts to fade, your nose is met with a beautiful and calming ambery scent.

I love wearing this during Spring or whenever I need a mood boost.

Funny! is such a cheery and sunny fragrance. It is sitting on your front porch on a warm summer day sipping lemonade. The scent of flowers from your garden wafts in and out on a gentle breeze. Maybe someone sitting next to you is drinking iced tea, because the dry crisp scent of tea is also in the air. This is the kind of perfume that just makes you feel good and think of carefree days.

Although not particularly unique, I think Funny! is one of the best of the citrus/floral genre. I also find the longevity particularly impressive for a citrus scent.

Funny! may not make you laugh out loud, but it's hard to imagine it not putting a smile on your face.

Funny is a playful burst of freshness that instantly uplifts the spirit. Bright citrus notes open the fragrance with a sparkling zest, gently melting into a heart of delicate peony and soothing green tea. Soft violet adds a sweet, powdery twist, making it both flirty and elegant. Light, joyful, and effortlessly charming, it's the perfect everyday scent for those who love a clean, cheerful aura with a touch of floral sophistication.

How do the notes play?

First spray is a bright, bitter orange (not listed here) green tea spiced with ground pink pepper, which adds a spicy and fruity aspect that is also accompanied by red currant. The peony is more predominant than the jasmine, but they both bring a flowery extra touch to it.

Cedar, musk, and moss are noticeable, but more like support notes to round it up and give this perfume a twist on the average citrus tea profile. Violet and amber are in the far background.

I would like to point out a fizziness that reminds me of Uomo? Eau de Toilette, so I assume there might be a slight aldehydic accord not declared. Also, to me this has a glitter feel from the 00s that I can’t explain, but I just love. More on that at the end of this review.

Overall, this is a linear fragrance; the changes are so minimal that, unless you truly focus on it, you won’t notice them. Sometimes one note takes over the other, but again, nothing that makes a huge difference.

Performance

Unfortunately, this perfume doesn’t have a good performance.

Compared to other orange citrus fragrances, it does have a similar behavior and you might get around 4+ hours of longevity (if you’re lucky). A moderate to personal scent bubble, which of course, is a shame considering that finding a dupe of this is HARD, and some sources have reported that it is now discontinued.

Occasions

Despite the name being “Funny!”, this is a gorgeous no brainer daily perfume that you can wear to the gym, school, run errands, or work, depending on what you do. This is what I like to consider an “androgynous” perfume that leans feminine, but has those male aspects to balance it out.

Conclusion

I would also like to share how I fell in love with this perfume. I went to a small shop I used to go for perfume every now and then, smelled this one time and passed on it. However, the smell got stuck to me as if I had to go back and buy. So, I did and with time I found out why I liked it at first sniff.

Long story short, I grew up as a kid in the 00s and my sisters are older than me; when I was in school they were already in college becoming adults. So, whenever they hang out with friends or they came home, there will always be at least one of them who would smell like this, and she was always the 2nd coolest and prettiest girl in the group (The first being of course, one of my sisters, duh). They went to parties and were the typical 00s/early 10s young adults who would watch Jersey Shore, Friends, Criminal Minds, and other famous shows of the time and also had HTV on 24/7. If you lived in Venezuela during that time, you know exactly the type of person I’m talking about.

I remember that somehow, that was the young adulthood I was promised. Now, do I have that in my mid 20s? No. But I like the idea of having accomplished it in a sense, even if it’s just by having a perfume that can remind me of what I thought my 20s would be.

So, if you’re looking for the scent of a cool girl in her 20s during the 00s living in Venezuela, this is for you.
