Orient meets the West
Only here and there does one learn something about this lesser-known fragrance house, les Fleurs du Golfe, which promises bombastic sillage, strong compositions, and true oriental scent sensations.
Rich vanilla, spices, fruits, sugar, noble woods, and above all Oud are pushed to the forefront here.
To get to know this line, I chose Vanille Alcantara, as it sounded like a velvety vanilla with a lighter Oud note... Oud is not my favorite, especially not the barnyard Oud... but the “beginner Oud,” which gives the fragrances an oriental touch, is all the more appealing.
I ordered directly from Les Fleurs du Golfe in France, and the package arrived within a week, unfortunately without samples to learn more about the brand.
The bottle looks high-quality, the only downside being that the spray head could be a bit finer. It doesn't produce a mist but rather a decent spray.
The scent:
I expected a clubbing fragrance. In fact, Vanille Alcantara is very tame and extremely feminine.
Delicate mandarin, which leans more towards the sweet side, but is by no means sticky or overly fruity, just beautifully balanced, and is immediately embraced by vanilla.
The vanilla does not come from the baking shelf but supports the mandarin with a soft creaminess that suggests fine, supple Nappa leather, hence the name Alcantara.
I detect a gentle woody base in the background, I suspect sandalwood, and a hint of Oud, and as hoped, no harsh “camel Oud” but soft and oriental, supporting the mandarin vanilla composition.
In the drydown, the woods and Oud push further to the forefront without ever becoming too loud. However, one should note that Ambroxan is included, and depending on skin chemistry, it may transform into a synthetic note that may not appeal to everyone.
All in all, the ingredients here are beautifully blended, and even in the West, this oriental composition is very wearable and comforting, especially for the evening hours.
The longevity is good, I perceive the scent on me for about 6-8 hours, longer on clothing, but I had expected a bit more punch; however, in case of doubt, it's better to be a little more subdued.
Someone who comes closer will definitely notice the scent.
Price-performance ratio is absolutely fine.
As I enjoy wearing rich fragrances, I am pleased with this new acquisition and am definitely curious about more from this fragrance house.
