Powdery Animalic
I had no notion until I smelled Gold Men that I'd formed an image (fantasy) in my mind of what the old-school animalic floral/orientals of the early 20th century were. On smelling Gold Men, I realized that I did, and that this was it.

Sensational, huge powdery animalic fragrance. Now I understand why these old perfumes were both powdery and animalic. If you do it right, it's brilliant.

As spectacular a ride as the top and heartnotes of this perfume are, the drydown is one of the best I've smelled. It's there, softer and quieter than the topnotes, but it remains fully-fleshed and complete. The drydown isn't just a ghost of the heartnotes.

Gold Men is powerful and distinctive. Not for shrinking violets, not for somebody who doesn't want to be identified for his scent. Certainly not for someone who wants to read as contemporary in a pop or trendy sense. Gold Men is more a leader than a follower in this respect. It is one of a very few fragrances that I could wear forever and be utterly happy.

Amouage Gold Man
The Omani perfume company Amouage had been on my radar for quite some time before I managed to pluck up enough courage to order a batch of samples of some of their fragrances. Having tested about a dozen of them, I can now see that ignoring this firm for so long was an act of utter foolishness. I must admit most of them are right up my alley: memorable, statement-making scents, composed of only top-notch ingredients. The first one I’m going to review is Amouage’s ur-masculine perfume, Gold Man.

From the very first spray, Gold Man took me by surprise- and a very pleasant one at that. It opens with a burst of floral notes, the most detectable one of which to my nose is lily-of-the-valley. Nevertheless, the fragrance remains floral only for a minute or so on my skin until soapy notes emerge. I remember that when sampling Gold Man for the first time, I had to check I was not actually testing its female counterpart since such a straightforward floral-soapy accord can rarely be found in masculine scents. It quite literally made my heart beat a tad faster! The soap-and-flower accord usually lingers on my skin for about half an hour. After that, it undergoes a gradual transformation with the arrival of musk and civet, thanks to which the fragrance adopts a more animalic character in the base. Yet the soapy notes never totally yield to the musk and civet, and thus prevent the scent from becoming too animalic.

I just couldn’t help falling in love with Amouage’s Gold Man! There are so many things about it that make my nose and heart rejoice whenever I put it on: its genderbending composition, superb blending of its notes as well as its effortless elegance. Despite not being a scent for all occasions, if the right one comes along, take my word for it: wear it, but be prepared to leave a few broken hearts in your wake. Exquisite!

the different brother of kouros
Mea culpa, I got there really late. I've had it on my list, among those to try, for almost five years and I only managed to hear it a few weeks ago. I have since had two bottles. It's a perfume that I really, really like, aldehydic at the opening, with a pungent white floral heart and a base of incense, musk and civet. In the base notes it reminds me of perfumes such as La Perla and Opium, this is due to the note of pungent incense which was very common in the feminine perfumes of the time and which I have always liked. Unlike the aforementioned females, however, Gold Man maintains a more pungent and cutting character, more masculine and less feminine. It remains very "clear" for the entire long duration on the skin and fortunately the base never turns into those sweetish and cloying abraded accords. It smells clean, soapy but with a very strong and impactful base. I love it. However, I understand why for many it may seem like an anachronistic perfume, and in fact it is... but the point is this, I like "old" perfumes, those from the past, only those I can really wear on a daily basis. This Amouage immediately entered my top 5. I compare it in genre to my beloved Kouros (vintage obviously), I feel it is similar in genre even if very different in performance. Unlike Kouros, however, I feel this is much more suitable for summer, while Kouros for me is exclusively winter/autumn.
Here too, as with Kouros, I would like to say that it is not a perfume for pussies, it is not a perfume for metrosexuals accustomed to wearing sweet and cloying stuff. It is a perfume for lovers of aldehyde, floral and animalic scents because the civet on the base is noticeable and must be liked. In short, a perfume that is not for everyone but which, if worn by the right person, in my opinion, performs magnificently.

Headache-inducing baby powder
Unfortunately, in the United States, baby powder is scented with a combination of aldehydes, violet, orris, and musks, and there is this permeating association everyone over a certain age has for it. Almost anything that is built around soapy orris and florals gives me this association, and Gold Man is no exception. Recently I learned that in Europe it's more common to scent baby powder with neroli oil, which is probably why so many Europeans find this combination in perfumery so classy and refined, when to Americans, it smells like a baby's bottom.

There is something interesting trying to come out in this fragrance, a purring civet hidden in the shadows, a soft myrrh note waiting in the wings, but the overwhelming powder and florals just don't let it happen. I sprayed 2 sprays of this stuff on an hour ago, and I'm already getting a headache. If the florals were toned down just a tad, I could see Gold Man being the grandpa of a Francesca Bianchi creation, a soft orris-y animalic with woody undertones. But alas, instead the wearer has to suffer through a soapy aldehydic stench before getting to anything good in the base.

I can't give this too bad of a score since I can't base it entirely off of personal preference - it is a good composition if you enjoy these smells; I just don't, at all. I think it is a bit unbalanced in that it doesn't give the resins and animalic notes a place to shine. It must have been outdated even in 1983, an aldehydic floral chypre a la N°5 Parfum can't have been cutting-edge perfumery.

All in all, not a great start to my Amouage adventure.

From The Golden days of the house
Gold Man from Amouage. This is my second favorite perfume from the house, only behind Interlude Woman. And while the latter is a conundrum of a scent that hints at the aesthetic of houses like Serge Lutens and Slumberhouse, Gold Man draws inspiration from vintage French perfumery (think Arpege), therefore not as unique, but adds in bold Middle Eastern elements such as Frankincense, heavy musks (mostly civet), ambergris, and woods. It feels and wears like a Roja perfume. It has that degree of sophistication and refinement that I have only encountered in fragrances such as Diaghilev and "M."

Gold displays a prominent lily of the valley accord that is the center of the floral bouquet, supported by jasmine, rose, and ylan-ylang. The aldehydes are not very noticeable with the older bottles, apart from the opening, and I find these to smell richer, more natural, and heavier on the floral materials. The more recent bottles smell rather synthetic and very aldehydic/soapy and powdery, making it difficult to identify any particular floral accords. I assume the Lilial ban further destroyed this creation after the oakmoss ban did its part, and of course, the market demands over the more recent years. Even so, I do like the current version of Gold; it is different but beautiful in its own right.

Although inspired by the French perfumery aesthetic, it feels and wears like an Oriental. The frankincense accord is prevalent and, for whatever reason, feels cold to me, imbuing a slight auster sensation. There are woods and oakmoss to ground the florals, and yes, there is a rather strong note of civet, yet nothing too crazy. It might scare off the average parfumista, but it's nothing like what you'd find in several vintage perfumes like Bandit, Femme, or modern spins like MAAI, or even Diaghilev. It's cleverly placed to add warmth and allure, next to the ambergris.

A bold floral perfume that can be easily worn by men and women alike, although one has to love and appreciate florals and big, baroque vintage perfumes to warm up to this.

Amouage's take on classic (or démodé?) French perfumery. Intense, long-lasting. For true aficionados, not for me. Sample first!

Waxy, bold, fatty florals and aldehydes make a clean, refined, un-sudsy soap. Floats in the air like shimmering, gold sunlight. Really good.
