Barely a Twig
Amouage has released yet another entry to the Opus lineup, this time centered around Timber, aka wood. Mister Salmonhead decided to lend Grugeon himself, the creator of Search and King Blue, the job of producing its scent. And I must say—it is a pretty great, complex composition. Here’s the thing… It's barely woody.

It starts out with a little zap of spice, which cardamom, pepper, and juniper provide, along with the initial fleeting, faint woody aspect. This smell lasts for quite some time, working together with a tinge of incense to make it a little more interesting than it was.

Yet at around the 2-hour mark, the scent flips around completely. It suddenly nearly exclusively smells like coffee from the cacao combined with sweet, burnt caramel. This caught me off guard, as it almost smells like a completely different perfume. Though this still accompanies the feel of the opening well.

Timber lasts a decently long time but isn’t the strongest projecting perfume. Its title contradicts the scent quite a bit, which is a shame, but it’s still a fairly pleasant wear. And in terms of price… Really?!

Dissapointment
Where are the woods? This feels like syntethic lavender with some spice.
Sampled an original sample.
I was expecting some resins, typical needle tree aromathics. Given the name "Timber" this would have been supreme wood scent. It could have been better without the bourbon vanilla and lavender. Instead there should have been some chaparral, clary sage, at least atlas cedar and pinyion pine resins, Ponderosa pine.
The recent releases are just all not as great as the Chong Era classics. For someone looking for woody/forest scents. Havenhollow and Pineward are the houses to go to! Full spectrum high end artisinal perfumery with amazing photorealistic scents.

Not exactly innovative
Another shorter review for Amouage's latest offering in 2025, that being Opus XVI - Timber. This is only off one wear and Timber doesn't really offer anything of interest to make me want to wear it again.

I get a spicy-woody-sweet open with some resinous and aromatic qualities. The spiciness feels more fresh spicy than warm, and some of those nuances at first reminded me of Lineage. This is also why you see people comparing it to Lustre since Lustre took some of the notes/accords from Lineage and Lustre is the most recent Amouage product to feature them. As it exits the immediate open, those touches actually steer more towards scents in the Le Male family, e.g. Reflection Man and Darley. A prominent aromatic quality starts to come through that begins to push it closer to a classic designer DNA, i.e. the scent has an aromatic & fresh spicy, somewhat clean feel to it the same way that Reflection has those warm spices opposed by light white florals and musk.

However, in the on-skin dry-down, the scent has a very clear direction with the designer-style lavender and/or fir coming out more. These notes are opposed by cardamom and the scent ultimately settles in the same family of products like Nishane's Papilefiko and Penhaligons' The Blazing Mister Sam. It's the same style of classic sweet masculine aromatic. In the deep dry-down, the scent has the same type of woody-spicy feel like in Lustre, likely driven by the sandalwood. For me, this was around the 8 hour mark or so.

While that profile fills a gap within Amouage's lineup, it definitely doesn't bring anything of value to the broader market. Opus XVI - Timber retails for €365/100ml, a price point where it gets completely outclassed by Penhaligons' (and Amouage could never compete with Nishane in grey market pricing either). The performance has no upside, but the blending has no shortfalls either. It's just been done a couple times too many and as a result, I'm not moved by the product.

Aromatic designer fragrance
Another Salmon release, another disaster (obviously). I was hoping the Opus collection will still remain a contested territory, not a place to release designer fragrances under the name of Amouage.
The opening is creamy, little bit spicy, reminding me of a combination with Reasons (without the hazelnut note) and Lustre. It calms down quite fast, and the fir and frankincense start to appear and it becomes very aromatic, maybe due to the combination of the juniper and cypress as well.
In the dry down it settles more into the aromatic notes combined with vanilla and very (but very) little woody notes, despite the name "Timber".
To be honest I am really disappointed, it does smell good, definitely, but not something worthy to pay this price. It is more into a designer type of fragrance or some room fragrance, but not something you can call it niche perfumery.

Sugar-glazed wooden beam
Amouage is good at combining woody and resinous notes with spices and preserving their natural qualities - sometimes somewhat reduced, sometimes noticeably more opulent. With Opus XVI - Timber, I had expected a more complex woody accord due to the many different notes before testing it, and yet I already had a premonition that I could be disappointed. The fragrance is actually a little different than I expected, but not uninteresting.

At the beginning, I perceive light spicy nuances (especially cardamom), a light, peppery spiciness and a very subtle, nutty note (more nougat than cocoa). The whole thing is immediately accompanied by a sugary sweetness (ethyl maltol) and rather soft, dry woods. By Amouage standards, the incense is really restrained and a little lavender rounds off the fragrance. Towards the base, minimally creamy notes become clearer, which - supported by vanillin - do not conceal the fact that this is primarily a spicy-woody perfume.

To my disappointment, the coniferous notes are almost absent here. I can't think of juniper, cypress and fir balsam, although some of the ingredients that are required to be declared at least hint at this (pinene, terpinolene, terpineol and alpha-terpinene). Virginia cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is more suitable and is also listed directly after Iso E Super and water (in descending order of volume). After several hours, I can also detect a darker, almost dirty note. I don't know whether this impression is caused by patchouli or a light amber accord, but I don't find it unpleasant.

Rather, I am bothered by the sweetness, which is simply too present for my taste and therefore becomes annoying. It's as if a wooden beam (= timber) had been taken and glazed with sugar. If this doesn't bother you, you might well enjoy Alexis Grugeon's creation. With very good longevity, the fragrance is not too loud, as it only has a strong projection at the beginning and then radiates consistently at a slightly above-average level.

Creamy spices, piney incense meet dry, charred woods. Aromatic, chocolaty, humid facets. VERY run-of-the-mill.
A waste of Grugeon's talent.

Boozy caramel, resins juxtaposed against spicy, dry cedar and charred lavender. Feels misnamed, smells like a Sephora score, not Amouage.

Soft woody fragrance sweetened with vanilla. It's aromatic and I get a very chocolatey vibe as it dries down. A disappointing opus

Better than most brands but far below Amouage's best. A shame to see the house continue in this direction. The name is poorly chosen too.

Another Amouage, another frankincense fragrance. Wake me when they realize they can make a fragrance without it.
