Cloud Surfing with Aladdin
I was in Saudi Arabia in July of 2012 and went fragrance shopping at Mall of Arabia in Jeddah. Happily I stumbled upon the Arabian Oud store and spent a glorious couple of hours testing and sniffing.
I bought a bottle of Kalemat Black (amongst others) and following a little research have ascertained that this fragrance was inspired by the way that bakhoor smells. Bakhoor are fragrant wood chips burned as incense and in this regard Kalemat Black delivers in spades. The notes listed on Arabian Oud's website are as follows:
Top: Frankincense,Basil
Heart: Vanilla
Base: Agarwood (Oud),Amber
The opening blast of Frankincense is rendered quite fresh with the addition of Basil but lasts only a few minutes before the Vanilla takes over, creating a gorgeous sweet caramel-ish vibe. The woodiness of the Agar is also prevalent early on but not at all in the medicinal way that Oud can sometimes be present, speaking to the obviously high quality ingredients. Here, rather, it has more of a Cedar cant, undoubtedly arranged by it's blending with Amber. Kalemat Black comes off as a sweet/woody/smooth fragrance with superior sillage and longevity. It definitely reminds one of an intricate brass burner wafting tendrils of gorgeously scented smoke. An absolute winner in my book!
