Stunning ... but confusion reigns!
Arabian Oud has fast become a favorite source to get my Oud fix from :). There is, however, a dearth of information on the net regarding these fragrances and what is available is immensely confusing. Shabby for a prestige house, imho.
This Mukhallat is a case in point. The information on their UK website lists the notes as follows:
Top: Egyptian Jasmine
Heart: Bulgarian Rose, Vanilla
Base: White Oud, Plant Amber
On their Middle Eastern (I'm assuming MAIN) site one gets this:
Top : Galbanum, Shepherd's Needle, Lemon
Heart: Clove, Cinnamon, Lavender, Rose, Jasmine
Base: Vanilla, Vetiver, Musk, Amber, Cedar, Patchouli and Sandal
Somehow these sound like two different fragrances ... albeit similar. There is also a lot of discrepancy in the name ... the packaging I have (and indeed the photos on both sites) lists it as 'SHIOUKH' while on the UK site it's 'SHIYOUKH' and on the main site it's 'SHEYOKH'. Trés bizarre, non?
It is a case, however, of 'a rose by any other name would smell as sweet', because on application of Mukhallat al Shioukh (I'm gonna stick with what my bottle says - pic below) an immensely deep and beautiful Rose starts to bloom and continues doing so for hours!! It really is phenomenal. I don't get much in the way of Lemon apart from an enticing, short lived freshness. Shepherd's Needle is a composite sunflower ... I've never heard of it so I can't comment on how it's supposed to smell.
There is DEFINITELY Oud here ... albeit light and I suppose that is what 'White Oud' could mean. A touch of spice leads to an immensely pleasing dry down of Amber, Cedar and an intensely lovely Sandalwood ... it smells like the 'good stuff'! Caramel-like Vanilla and Amber also play a role here but the star of this fragrance is undoubtedly the exquisite Rose, majestically Arabic in all it's glory!!
Barring all of the confusion, Mukhallat al Shioukh easily falls into my top five all time favorite fragrances. It's truly outstanding in it's genre.
